The equilibrium and kinetic properties of Pb2+ ion adsorption by retorted shale (RS) have been investigated during a series of batch adsorption experiments. The effects of pH, contact time and adsorbate initial concentration were evaluated. The pseudo-second-order model was used to predict the rate constants of adsorption system. The intraspecific variability of Triatoma dimidiata Latreille, a major vector of Chagas disease, was studied in four departments of Guatemala. Insects were collected from either domestic and sylvatic habitats, and their cuticular hydrocarbon pattern and head morphology were analyzed using ordination and classification techniques. A significant discrimination was obtained both with morphometric and hydrocarbon analyses. Insects from northern departments were easily differentiated from southern conspecifics. ...

It has been shown that plant breeding systems are associated with particular floral traits. Seventeen variables were evaluated as possible risk factors for the intradomiciliary infestation with Triatoma dimidiata in 644 houses in Jutiapa, Guatemala. During 2004 the houses were assessed for vector presence and evaluated for hygiene, cluttering, material comfort, construction conditions and number of inhabitants, among other factors. In the present work, a synthetic effluent of phenol was treated by means of a total oxidation process-Catalyzed Wet Oxidation (CWO). A mixed oxide of Mn-Ce (7:3), the catalyst, was synthesized by co-precipitation from an aqueous solution of MnCl2 and CeCl3 in a basic medium.
