The “Ars” magazine, created by the graduate program in Visual Arts from Escola de Comunicação e Artes [School of Arts and Communication], at the University of Sao Paulo, gathers art relevant works by students at the university and outside of the academia. The magazine suggests that the issues involving an art school should not remain restricted to the academic environment, but should be taken as a cultural debate beyond the University walls and doubt art perspectives in a contemporary context.

Equal-channel angular (ECA) pressing has been used to introduce a very small grain size into a commercial cast Al-Mg-Li-Zr alloy. Tensile testing reveals the potential for achieving superplastic ductilities in this alloy at very -high strain rates (greater than 10-2s-1) but experiments show that this potential is realized only if a sufficiently high strain is introduced during the ECA pressing such that the microstructure is homogeneous and consists of an array of grains having large-angle grain boundaries.

Is There a Bubble in the Housing Market? Karl E. Case and Robert J. Shiller The popular press is full of speculation that the United States, as well as other countries, is in a “housing bubble” that is about to burst. The Economist has published a series of articles with titles like “Castles in Hot Air,” “House of Cards,” “Bubble Trouble,” and “Betting ...

In the study of electromagnetic wave propagation and scattering, researchers have always faced the dichotomy of dealing directly with Maxwell's equations (and their complicated analytical/numerical solution methods) or trying to find a simplified model (usually in terms of an equivalent circuit) that can help provide some physical insight into the involved electromagnetic phenomena. The pursuit of analytical solutions for propagation, radiation, and scattering problems does not seem to be a task currently ...

Abstract The short-lived magazine Mickey Revista Infantil Ilustrada (Molino, 1935–1936), marked a pivotal moment in Spanish children's press by introducing material of the Walt Disney Studios to its readers. Following the Italian Topolino (1932) and the French Le Journal de Mickey (1934) the magazine Mickey Revista Infantil Ilustrada represents three innovative trends in children's periodicals in Spain in the 1930s: the intersection of local and American comics, genres, and formats; different efforts ...

The comics anthologies Ally Sloper and Escape magazine began publication in the 1970s and 1980s. They inherited a complex national situation, one in which locally produced comics always had to compete with foreign imports, primarily superhero comics from the United States. Each of these pioneering anthologies sought to create a space for small press and independent English comics and a wider sense of the history and potential of the medium, but in doing so, they had to negotiate a history and market ...

Abstract This article examines three comics strips published by the feminist French underground magazine Ah!Nana (1976–1978) in which the artists Nicole Claveloux, Yves Chaland, and Cecilia Capuana lampoon marriage and child-rearing. I contend that their criticisms are based on the feminist works of Simone de Beauvoir and Luce Irigaray, as well as on the anti-family stance of the May ’68 movement, on American underground feminisms, and on post-war anti-Americanisation movements. Even though Claveloux' ...

I then go on to discuss Fayard's innovations in relation ...

In the 1990s and 2000s, three Finnish comics magazines were established for comics made by women. Drawing from a multidisciplinary framework of studies on feminism, gender and humour, this article argues that the magazines used the comics form to discuss feminist issues and to disrupt essentialist conceptions and expectations about gender. The common denominator for the magazines was the use of humour as a tool, although humoristic strategies and understandings of gender varied. This article gives ...

In mid-1970s Spain, many new satirical magazines featured a strong political stance opposing Francisco Franco’s regime and in favour of democracy. Magazines with a significant amount of comics-based content constituted a space for political and social critics, as humour allowed them to go further than other media. However, legal authorities tried to censor and punish them. This article analyses the relationship between the Spanish satirical press and censorship and focuses on the difficulties their ...

The publication of comics from the 1950s onwards in East Germany started as a defensive reaction against Western comics. It did not take long for the medium to be used as an instrument for socialist propaganda. This was especially the case with the historical-political comics in the magazine Atze. This article provides an overview of the representation of the First World War and the German Revolution of 1918–1919 in Atze. It shows that Atze's stories closely followed the historical perspective prescribed ...
