Pantothenate kinase (PanK) is the key regulatory enzyme in the CoA biosynthetic pathway. The PanK gene fromEscherichia coli (coaA) has been previously cloned and the enzyme biochemically characterized; highly related genes exist in other prokaryotes. We isolated a PanK cDNA clone from the eukaryotic fungus Aspergillus nidulans by functional complementation of a temperature-sensitive E. coli PanK mutant. The cDNA clone allowed the isolation of the genomic clone and the characterization of the A. nidulans ...

Michael J. Prince,

In From Hell, Alan Moore establishes systemic patriarchal sexual violence against the backdrop of Victorian London. While rape and other acts of physical repression are easily linked to the notion of sexual violence, Moore's treatment is concentrated on the society as a whole. His anti-hero, physician Sir William Gull, justifies the serial murders and dissection rituals as a necessary continuation of Victorian inequality and as a symbolic manifestation of patriarchy's counterattack. Linking ancient ...

A process based on reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) has been developed for the purification of biosynthetic human insulin (BHI). The RP-HPLC procedure has been successfully integrated into the multimodal chromatographic production process used to purify kilogram quantities of BHI. Axial compression column technology was used in the scale-up process. The RP-HPLC procedure yields an insulin product having high chemical purity and full biological activity.
