Eddie Hyatt, Russell Griffin, Loring W. Rue, Gerald McGwin,

Motorcyclists have been reported to be more likely to die in a motor vehicle collision (MVC) than automobile occupants. With the recent increase in the pump price of gasoline, it has been reported that people are switching to motorcycles as main modes of transportation. This study evaluated the association between motor vehicle collision-related injury and mortality rates and increases in gasoline prices for occupants of automobiles and riders of motorcycles. There were an estimated 1,270,512 motorcycle ...

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) gpUL18 is a HLA class I (HLA-I) homologue with high affinity for the inhibitory receptor LIR-1/ILT2. The previously described 67 kDa form of gpUL18 is shown here to be sensitive to endoglycosidase-H (EndoH). A novel form of gpUL18 with a molecular mass of ∼160 kDa and resistance to EndoH was identified in cells infected with HCMV strain AD169 or the low passage HCMV isolates Merlin and Toledo. The 67 kDa EndoH-sensitive gpUL18 glycoform was detected earlier in a productive ...

The useful compromise between resolution and penetration power of the submillimeter or terahertz (THz) spectral region has long made it attractive for a variety of imaging applications. However, many of the demonstrations of imaging in this spectral region have used strategically oriented targets, especially favorable concealment materials, proximate imaging geometries, etc. This paper reports the results of studies aimed at better understanding the phenomenology of targets, the impact of this phenomenology ...

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) causes lifelong, persistent infections and its survival is under intense, continuous selective pressure from the immune system. A key aspect of HCMV's capacity for survival lies in immune avoidance. In this context, cells undergoing productive infection exhibit remarkable resistance to natural killer (NK) cell-mediated cytolysis in vitro. To date, six genes encoding proteins (UL16, UL18, UL40, UL83, UL141 and UL142) and one encoding a microRNA (miR-UL112) have been identified ...

Federated learning (FL) is a method used for training artificial intelligence models with data from multiple sources while maintaining data anonymity, thus removing many barriers to data sharing. Here we used data from 20 institutes across the globe to train a FL model, called EXAM (electronic medical record (EMR) chest X-ray AI model), that predicts the future oxygen requirements of symptomatic patients with COVID-19 using inputs of vital signs, laboratory data and chest X-rays. EXAM achieved an average ...

Protein, glycogen, and lipid concentrations were followed in Solenopsis invicta queens, the imported fire ant, from egg deposition until the production of the first minim workers approximately 21 days later. During this time, the weight of the queens decreased from 14·7 to 7·5 mg. Immediately following egg deposition, total protein decreased by over 50 per cent for the first 6 days, then rose steadily for 9 days, then once again decreased markedly throughout the remainder of the study. Death receptor 3 (DR3), a member of the TNF receptor (TNFR) superfamily, is induced in human renal tubular epithelial cells (TEC) in response to injury. This study examined the expression and actions of TL1A, the principal ligand for DR3. In histologically normal tissue from biopsy or nephrectomy specimens of renal allografts, TL1A mRNA and protein were expressed in vascular endothelial cells but not in TEC. In specimens of acute or antibody-mediated allograft rejection, vascular endothelial cells ...

Abstract The inhibitory leukocyte Ig-like receptor 1 (LIR-1, also known as ILT2, CD85j, or LILRB1) was identified by its high affinity for the human CMV (HCMV) MHC class I homolog gpUL18. The role of this LIR-1-gpUL18 interaction in modulating NK recognition during HCMV infection has previously not been clearly defined. In this study, LIR-1+ NKL cell-mediated cytotoxicity was shown to be inhibited by transduction of targets with a replication-deficient adenovirus vector encoding UL18 (RAd-UL18). Fibroblasts ...
