Alzheimer's disease is characterized by the deposition of amyloid plaques in the brain. The major components of these plaques are β-amyloid (Aβ) peptides. The CSF concentration of these peptides can therefore provide a valuable biomarker for potentially predicting the state of disease and/or monitoring the efficacy of a drug aiming to inhibit the formation of amyloid plaques. Although the concentration of a given peptide in CSF can easily be measured by ELISA methods, few methods are able to simultaneously ...

Cichlid fishes have evolved tremendous morphological and behavioral diversity in the waters of East Africa. Within each of the Great Lakes Tanganyika, Malawi, and Victoria, the phenomena of hybridization and retention of ancestral polymorphism explain allele sharing across species. Here, we explore the sharing of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) between the major East African cichlid assemblages. A set of approximately 200 genic and nongenic SNPs was ascertained in five Lake Malawi species ...

Abstract Deng Xiao-ping put forth the idea of “Marketization” of housing in China in 1980. Since then, the mechanism of “market” has been implicitly accepted by Socialist China. This has resulted in many changes in the urban housing system in which home purchase is now encouraged. This paper reviews the urban housing reform programme which was proposed by the State Council since 1987. Also, the emergence of the dual track housing system in Beijing will be explored. Finally, the problems associated ...

This study explores how often faculty members encourage students to engage with campus, local, state, national, and global issues. Using data from the 2013 administration of the Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (FSSE), the results show that faculty members are more likely to encourage students to engage in state, national, or global issues than campus or local issues. Differences in faculty encouragement of civic engagement are also presented across gender, racial/ethnic identification, rank ...

Objective Optimising the depth and rate of applied chest compressions following out of hospital cardiac arrest is crucial in maintaining end organ perfusion and improving survival. The impedance cardiogram (ICG) measured via defibrillator pads produces a characteristic waveform during chest compressions with the potential to provide feedback on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and enhance performance. The objective of this pre-clinical study was to investigate the relationship between mechanical ...

ABSTRACT We explore the sensitivity of the frequencies of low-degree solar p modes to near-surface magnetic flux on different spatial scales and strengths, specifically to active regions with strong magnetic fields and ephemeral regions with weak magnetic fields. We also use model reconstructions from the literature to calculate average frequency offsets back to the end of the Maunder minimum. We find that the p-mode frequencies are at least 3 times less sensitive (at 95 per cent confidence) to the ...
