We measure the interaction between ⁴He gas at 4.2 K and a high-quality nanoelectromechanical string device for its first three symmetric modes (resonating at 2.2, 6.7, and 11 MHz with quality factor Q>0.1×10⁶) over almost 6 orders of magnitude in pressure. This fluid can be viewed as the best experimental implementation of an almost ideal monoatomic and inert gas of which properties are tabulated. The experiment ranges from high pressure where the flow is of laminar Stokes-type presenting slippage ...

Superfluids, such as superfluid ${}^{3}$He and ${}^{4}$He, exhibit a broad range of quantum phenomena and excitations, which are unique to these systems. Nanoscale mechanical resonators are highly sensitive force detectors with the ability to operate over many orders of magnitude in damping. Using nanomechanical doubly clamped beams, the authors probe superfluid ${}^{4}$He from the superfluid transition temperature down to millikelvin temperatures. They demonstrate excellent agreement with a ballistic model, incorporating ...

Decoherence is an essential mechanism that defines the boundary between classical and quantum behaviours, while imposing technological bounds for quantum devices. Little is known about quantum coherence of mechanical systems, as opposed to electromagnetic degrees of freedom. But decoherence can also be thought of in a purely classical context, as the loss of phase coherence in the classical phase space. Indeed the bridge between quantum and classical physics is under intense investigation, using ...

We report on microwave optomechanics measurements performed on a nuclear adiabatic demagnetization cryostat, whose temperature is determined by accurate thermometry from below 500$~\mu$K to about 1$~$Kelvin. We describe a method for accessing the on-chip temperature, building on the blue-detuned parametric instability and a standard microwave setup. The capabilities and sensitivity of both the experimental arrangement and the developed technique are demonstrated with a very weakly coupled silicon- ...

We report on experiments addressing the non-linear interaction between a nano-mechanical mode and position fluctuations. The Duffing non-linearity transduces the Brownian motion of the mode, and of other non-linearly coupled ones, into frequency noise. This mechanism, ubiquitous to all weakly-nonlinear resonators thermalized to a bath, results in a phase diffusion process altering the motion: two limit behaviors appear, analogous to motional narrowing and inhomogeneous broadening in NMR. Their crossover ...

Advances in nanomechanics within recent years have demonstrated an always expanding range of devices, from top-down structures to appealing bottom-up MoS2 and graphene membranes, used for both sensing and component-oriented applications. One of the main concerns in all of these devices is frequency noise, which ultimately limits their applicability. This issue has attracted a lot of attention recently, and the origin of this noise remains elusive to date. In this article we present a very simple ...

Nanomechanical resonators are extremely sensitive force detectors and, therefore, provide fantastic probes for superfluids at low temperatures. The authors show that a nanomechanical resonator can detect the modulated flux of thermal phonons (`phonon wind') in superfluid ${}^{4}$He at millikelvin temperatures. To do this, they set up a modulated flux of phonons by passing an ac current through a nearby heater. The phonons collide with the nanobeam and are able to excite the system into oscillation.

We report on experiments performed within the Knudsen boundary layer of a low-pressure gas. The noninvasive probe we use is a suspended nanoelectromechanical string, which interacts with ^{4}He gas at cryogenic temperatures. When the pressure P is decreased, a reduction of the damping force below molecular friction ∝P had been first reported in Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 136101 (2014)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.113.136101 and never reproduced since. We demonstrate that this effect is independent of ...

We report on measurements of dissipation and frequency noise at millikelvin temperatures of nanomechanical devices covered with aluminum. A clear excess damping is observed after switching the metallic layer from superconducting to the normal state with a magnetic field. Beyond the standard model of internal tunneling systems coupled to the phonon bath, here we consider the relaxation to the conduction electrons together with the nature of the mechanical dispersion laws for stressed/unstressed devices. ...

Ileocolonic resection is frequently needed in the course of Crohn's disease [CD] treatment and post-operative recurrence is extremely common. The 2015 Lancet Commission on global surgery identified surgery and anaesthesia as indispensable parts of holistic health-care systems. However, COVID-19 exposed the fragility of planned surgical services around the world, which have also been neglected in pandemic recovery planning. This study aimed to develop and validate a novel index to support local elective surgical system strengthening and address growing backlogs.
