Vineyards in southern Brazil have high copper levels due to the application of products to control fungal diseases. High soil concentrations of this element can have toxicity to young plants. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can alleviate this effect, but the beneficial effect depends on the plant and AMF. AMF have different ecological strategies and respond differently to environmental and management variables. We analyzed AMF species richness, root mycorrhizal colonization, and soil physicochemical ...

Emerging technologies are demanding innovative properties of glasses. In this work Cerium Oxide is used as dopant in Zinc-Tellurite samples and its effects on the properties of the glass are investigated. Thermal analysis and X-ray diffraction confirmed the amorphous nature of all samples. The bivalent nature of Cerium is investigated spectroscopically and an strong redshift induced by the dopant is attributed to charge transfers O2−→Ce4+, while the 4f-5d transition of Ce3+ could not be identified ...

ABSTRACT: Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) play an important role in plant growth. However, there are no reports of legally commercialized AMF-based inoculants for agricultural crops in Brazil. The objective of this research was to evaluate the agronomic efficiency of a Rhizophagus intraradices inoculant in combination with phosphate fertilization in grain yield of corn under different edaphoclimatic conditions in Brazil. Experiments were conducted in five Brazilian states (Goiás, Mato Grosso, Minas ...

Glacial retreat is one of the most conspicuous signs of warming in Antarctic regions. Glacier soils harbor an active microbial community of decomposers, and under the continuous retraction of glaciers, the soil starts to present a gradient of physical, chemical, and biological factors reflecting regional changes over time. Little is known about the biological nature of fungi in Antarctic glacier soils. In this sense, this work aimed at studying the behavior of fungal community structure from samples ...

The acaricidal bioactivity of an oxymatrine-based commercial formulation against Brevipalpus yothersi Baker (Acari: Tenuipalpidae), a vector mite of the Citrus leprosis virus (CiLV), and its impact on predatory mites were assessed. For this purpose, laboratory and field assays using bioacaricide concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 2.0 mg L-1 of oxymatrine were performed during the years from 2015 to 2016. Laboratory results showed that the oxymatrine-based commercial formulation does not cause deleterious ...

A high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method was developed for the simultaneous isolation, on a semi-preparative scale, of chavibetol and methyleugenol from the crude essential oil of P. pseudocaryophyllus leaves. The purity of the isolated compounds and their quantifications were developed using GC/FID. Chavibetol was isolated with high purity (98.7%) and mass recovery (94.6%). The mass recovery (86.4%) and purity (85.3%) of methyleugenol were lower than those of chavibetol. Both compounds ...

The Paraná basin is one of the major morphotectures of the South American continent. Although its tectono-sedimentary evolution has been widely studied and fairly well understood, this paper aims to fill a gap in knowledge comprising the tectonic evolution after the end of its last sedimentary cycle, in the Upper Cretaceous. In this context, the Jordan River watershed, situated in the surroundings of Guarapuava municipality, south central region of Paraná State, was selected for structural and morphometric ...

The catchments of the Lava-Tudo and Pelotas rivers are located on the eastern edge of the Paraná Sedimentary Basin, central-east of the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina. This region comprises Mesozoic volcanic rocks from the Paraná Large Igneous Province (LIP) deformed by Cenozoic joints and faults. Morphometric analysis carried out using remote sensing and structural data showed the influence of tectonics on the geomorphological framework of the target catchments, which therefore provided a morphological ...

An alternative for recovery of areas degraded by coal mining is revegetation with rapidly growing leguminous trees, which often do not establish in low fertility soils. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of native rhizobia isolated from coal mining areas in the nodulation and growth of leguminous trees. We isolated 19 strains of rhizobia from a degraded soil near Criciúma, SC, Brazil, and evaluated the nodulation and growth-promoting capacity of the inoculated isolates for ...

During physical activity, increased reactive oxygen species production occurs, which can lead to cell damage and in a decline of individual's performance and health. The use of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids as a supplement to protect the immune system has been increasing; however, their possible benefit to the anti-oxidant system is not well described. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate whether the omega-3 fatty acids (docosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid) can be beneficial ...

Strenuous exercise is detrimental to athletes because of the overproduction of reactive oxygen species. Melatonin, a classic antioxidant, has been shown to exhibit beneficial effects regarding intense exercise and tissue repair. In this study, we evaluated the onset and resolution of inflammation in melatonin-treated and nontreated rats subjected to a strenuous exercise session. We also analyzed the formation of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and the activities of catalase (CAT), ...

This work presents a new software tool for morphometric analysis of drainage networks based on the methods of Hack (1973) and Etchebehere et al. (2004). This tool is applicable to studies of morphotectonics and neotectonics. The software used a digital elevation model (DEM) to identify the relief breakpoints along drainage profiles (knickpoints). The program was coded in Python for use on the ArcGIS platform and is called Knickpoint Finder. A study area was selected to test and evaluate the software' ...

Abstract The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of cytological abnormalities of the anal mucosa in women with positive cervical cytology, but without macroscopic anal lesion. Ultimately we postulated if the anal mucosa may be a reservoir of HPV, which would allow the reinfection of cervix. Forty‐nine patients with abnormal cervical cytology were selected for this work. In a period not exceeding one week of collecting cervix cytology, two swab specimens of the anal canal were ...

Osteonecrosis (ON) is a critical complication in the treatment of childhood leukemia and lymphoma. It particularly affects survivors of acute lymphoblastic leukemia and non-Hodgkin lymphoma reflecting the cumulative exposure to glucocorticosteroid therapy. A conventional approach suggests a surgical intervention even if pharmacological options have also recently been investigated. We reported two cases of long time ...
