Caffeic acid (CA) is a hydroxycinnamic acid derivative and polyphenol with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. The neuroprotective properties of CA still need detailed characterization in different biological models. Here, the antioxidant and neuroprotective effects of CA were compared in in vitro and in vivo neurotoxic models. Biochemical outcomes of cell dysfunction, oxidative damage, and transcriptional regulation were assessed in rat cortical slices, whereas endpoints of physiological ...

Nanotechnologies are part of a new industrial platform with the capability to surpass existing tech-intensive systems for water treatment. Accordingly, many countries apply nanotechnology-based processes to solve problems associated with water. The authors of this article review the state of nanotech applications for water treatment in Mexico. To this purpose, they follow the trajectory of the nanotech package; from research and development to its commercialization. The study encompassed several ...

The aim of this study was to determine the recreational value of the three major coral reefs in the Mexican Pacific: Cabo Pulmo, Islas Marietas and Huatulco. 488 and 455 domestic and international tourists respectively were interviewed, and their socioeconomic profile and perception of the coral reef they visited were determined. Using the dichotomous choice contingent valuation method, a willingness to pay of US$ 5.79 for conservation activities was determined, as well as a net annual benefit from ...

Peptide-based drugs are an attractive class of therapeutic agents, recently recognized by the pharmaceutical industry. These molecules are currently being used in the development of innovative therapies for diverse health conditions, including tropical diseases such as leishmaniasis. Despite its socioeconomic influence on public health, leishmaniasis remains long-neglected and categorized as a poverty-related disease, with limited treatment options. Peptides with antileishmanial effects encountered ...

The use of antibiotics in animal production are widely used for disease treatment, health protection, and as growth promoters. Common antibiotics used in veterinary medicine are excreted and eliminated through the sewage system, contaminating water and soil with negative effects on agricultural activities. This systematic review focuses on the trend of research works on antibiotic residues, evaluating antibiotics used in livestock production and their excretion in animal products and in environmental ...

Peptides have positively impacted the pharmaceutical industry as drugs, biomarkers, or diagnostic tools of high therapeutic value. However, only a handful have progressed to the market. Toxicity is one of the main obstacles to translating peptides into clinics. Hemolysis or hemotoxicity, the principal source of toxicity, is a natural or disease-induced event leading to the death of vital red blood cells. Initial screenings for toxicity have been widely evaluated using erythrocytes as the gold standard. ...

IL-1 and TNF-α are always present during wound repair, but their pleiotropic and synergistic effects are incompletely understood. In this work, we evaluated the role of IL-1 in wound repair, and examined whether TNF-α administration impaired scarless wound repair. First, we characterised wound repair in outbred CD-1 mice according to age and sex in an ear punch wound model. Then, we examined the effects of Interleukin 1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra) and TNF-α placement inside ear wounds by means of ...

✓The authors describe the case of a patient who sustained a transverse sacral fracture (TSF) associated with a depressed laminar fracture in a personal watercraft accident. The patient underwent early surgery, which allowed a quick recovery. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the mechanism of injury and type of fracture have not been previously described or classified in cases of TSF.

In this study, we report the lowest energy structure of bare Cu13 nanoclusters as a pair of enantiomers at room temperature. Moreover, we compute the enantiomerization energy for the interconversion from minus to plus structures in the chiral putative global minimum for temperatures ranging from 20 to 1300 K. Additionally, employing nanothermodynamics, we compute the probabilities of occurrence for each particular isomer as a function of temperature. To achieve that, we explore the free energy surface ...

Paper–oil insulation in power transformers is degraded and gradually damaged due to electrical, chemical, mechanical and moisture factors. It is well established from several studies that moisture is a major source of insulation failure in high voltage power transformers. Measurement and monitoring of moisture is essential to predict life and operation condition for power transformers. This paper presents direct optical measurement of water content at paper insulation immersed in transformer oil ...

The marine environment is highly diverse, each living creature fighting to establish and proliferate. Among marine organisms, cyanobacteria are astounding secondary metabolite producers representing a wonderful source of biologically active molecules aimed to communicate, defend from predators, or compete. In developing countries, illegal dump structures or even some landfills do not include methane collecting systems, even if local environmental laws exist. In this condition, the greenhouse gas escapes to the atmosphere uncontrolled and practical solutions to tackle this problem are not obvious. To make a solution approachable, first-hand reliable data from dump emissions are required as starting point. The methane production is not homogeneous throughout the dump, therefore to estimate its global ...

High performance, highly efficient DC-DC converters play a key role in improving the penetration of renewable energy sources in the context of smart grids in applications such as solid-state transformers, built-in power drives in electric vehicles and interfacing photovoltaic and wind-power systems. Advanced medium-frequency transformers (MFTs) are fundamental to enhance DC-DC converters and determining its behavior, therefore MFT design procedures have become increasingly important in this context. ...

Medium frequency transformers (MFTs) are a key component of DC–DC dual active bridge (DAB)-type converters. These technologies are becoming a quintessential part of renewable energy solutions, such as photovoltaic systems and wind energy power plants, as well as in modern power grid interfaces functioning as solid-state transformers in smart-grid environments. The weight and physical dimensions of an MFT are key data for the design of these devices. The size of an MFT is reduced by increasing its ...

It is known that l-tryptophan stimulates serotonin synthesis in the brain and serotonergic neuronal activity. Also, the N1/P2 component of auditory evoked potential (AEP) is a good indicator of this activity in the auditory cortex. In the present work, we examined the effect of the l-tryptophan administration on electric activity of the auditory cortex recorded as the N1/P2 component of the AEP in adult male rats. The effect of serotonergic agonists or antagonists was also tested. The results showed ...

BACKGROUND: Glioblastoma is the most common and deadly cancer type in the central nervous system. Following the conventional treatments in these patients, the prognosis remains poor due to high tumor recurrence. Anthocyanins from natural sources, such as blackberries (Rubus spp.), have demonstrated anti-proliferative effects on glioma cell lines. However, anthocyanins present in wild blackberries have been poorly studied on these cancer cells. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine the anthocyanins profile ...

In utero undernourishment produces an elevation of L-tryptophan and serotonin in the brain, including the auditory cortex (A1), such changes seem to be related to an increase in the free fraction (FFT) of plasma L-tryptophan that is transported into the brain through the blood-brain barrier, where it is taken up by serotonergic neurons for serotonin synthesis. Our observations support that FFT has a positive correlation with L-tryptophan (L-Trp) and serotonin levels in the auditory cortex (r=0.95 and ...

Methane (CH4) is a greenhouse gas generated during the feed fermentation processes in the rumen. However, numerous studies have been conducted to determine the capacity of plant secondary metabolites to enhance ruminal fermentation and decrease CH4 production, especially those plants rich in tannins.
