Reducing radiation damage is important and dietary antioxidants that can protect cells from such damage are of value. Dietary lycopene, a carotenoid found in tomatoes, protects human lymphoid cell membranes from damage by γ‐radiation. We report that such protective effects are remarkably reduced as the oxygen concentration increases – near zero at 100% oxygen from fivefold protection at 20% oxygen and, dramatically, from 50‐fold protection at 0% oxygen. In this paper we present an experimental investigation of the magnetic properties of metallic multilayers (here Nd-Fe) by magnetic x-ray dichroism (MXD). The magnetic absorption cross sections have been measured, using a dispersive optics, on both the ${\mathit{L}}_{\mathrm{II}}$ edge of Nd and the K edge of Fe in several Nd-Fe multilayers (\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\approxeq}40--100 \AA{}), for temperatures ranging from 77 to 300 K. We present a detailed analysis of the pre-edge peak present in the Al K-edge XANES spectra of corundum (α-Al2O3) and diaspore (α-AlOOH), as measured at room temperature. This is achieved by XANES and DOS calculations performed using the density functional theory in a pseudopotential plane-wave framework.
