Three alkylpolyoxyethylene surfactants bearing the same hydrophobic chain and a different number of oxyethylene groups were investigated as suitable candidates for the soil washing treatment of contaminated soil samples containing bentazone. Comparable good recoveries of the pesticide were obtained working with these surfactants. The photocatalytic treatment of the collected washing wastes, performed in the presence of suspended TiO2 particles under irradiation with simulated sunlight, leads to ...

To promote bio-based products for the industry, six bio-organic substances (cHALi) isolated from yard trimmings (green) and food (humid) urban residues aged under aerobic digestion for 0–60 days were investigated for their potential to perform as sensitizers for azo-dyes photodegradation. Ethylorange (EO) was used as probe molecule at 5 mg L−1 starting concentration and irradiated in a closed Pyrex® cell with a Xenon (1500 W) lamp and a cut-off filter for wavelengths below 340 nm or in a cylindrical ...

High-performance liquid chromatography coupled to ultraviolet diode array detection and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry was applied to monitor the photocatalytic degradation mediated by TiO2 of three sulfonated monoazo dyes (Orange I, Orange II, and Ethylorange) present in aqueous solution. Photobleaching, organic carbon, nitrogen and sulfur evolution were also followed during the process. Delayed carbon mineralization was observed with respect to both dyes disappearance and photobleaching, ...

The possible use of flow injection (FI) to monitor the photocatalytic mineralization of dicamba (3,6-dichloro-2-methoxybenzoic acid) present at the trace level in aqueous solutions containing TiO2 suspensions has been evaluated. Experiments were performed in a stirred photochemical reactor equipped with a simple FI manifold, integrating an online filtration unit able to perform the monitoring of the UV absorbance of the irradiated solution every 4 min. The light source used was a medium pressure mercury ...

Milled southern pine wood was modified with sequential treatments of sodium periodate and sodium hypobromite for the purpose of improving copper ion (Cu2+) sorption capacity of the wood when tested in 24-h equilibrium batch tests. The modified wood provided additional carboxyl groups to those in the native wood and substantially increased Cu2+ uptake over that of unmodified wood. Sorption capacity (qe) measured with an unbuffered standard solution increased to a maximum of 7.8 mg Cu2+ ion per gram ...

The photocatalytic degradations of 4-chlorophenol (CP), 4-chloro-2-methylphenol (CMP), 4-chloro-3,5-dimethylphenol (CDMP) and 4-chloro-2-isopropyl-5-methylphenol (CIMP) were investigated in water and in simulated soil washing wastes containing Brij 35 (polyoxyethylene(23)dodecyl ether) in the presence of TiO2 dispersions. A neat inhibition of substrate decomposition proportional to their growing hydrophobicity was observed in the washing wastes for CP, CMP and CDMP, whereas CIMP showed a different behaviour. ...

Surfactant-assisted soil washing and photocatalysis are well-known remediation processes of environmental concern. The application of photocatalysis to treat soil washing extracts containing 4-methylphenol, 4-ethylphenol and 4-tert-butylphenol in the presence of nonionic (C(12)E(8) and C(12)E(23)) and anionic (SDS) surfactants and some of their binary mixtures was investigated in this work by studying the pollutants degradation in the presence of TiO(2) dispersions irradiated with simulated solar ...

The effect of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) on the photocatalytic degradation of 2,4,5-trichlorophenol (2,4,5-TCP) in aqueous TiO2 dispersions under irradiation with simulated AM1 solar light was investigated. A peculiar kinetic behaviour was observed, with increasing inhibition of the substrate degradation as a function of SDS concentration below the critical micellar concentration (cmc), followed by a subsequent faster degradation around this concentration range and a further degradation rate decrease ...

Inhibition of substrate decomposition was observed for phenol, both below and above the surfactant critical micellar concentration, whereas a more complex behaviour was exhibited ...

Nitrobenzene thermal degradation was investigated using the Fenton reagent in different experimental conditions. Reaction products were analyzed by HPLC, GC–MS, LC–MS and IC. The products obtained at different nitrobenzene conversion degrees show that degradation mainly involves successive hydroxylation steps of the aromatic ring and its subsequent opening followed by oxidation of corresponding aliphatic compounds. Our results show as primary reaction products: 4-nitrophenol, 3-nitrophenol, 2-nitrophenol, ...

Abstract The effect of simulated solar light on nitrobenzene degradation in Fe 3+ /H 2 O 2 solutions was investigated under different experimental conditions. Consumption profiles of NBE and H 2 O 2 display an autocatalytic kinetic behavior for both dark and photo-assisted degradation experiments. The rates of the initial slow phase that precedes the catalytic phase are significantly enhanced by irradiation, although the effect of simulated solar light on the rates of the fast phase is negligible. ...

Abstract The photocatalytic transformation of the pesticide 4,6-dinitro-o-cresol (DNOC) over irradiated TiO2 suspensions was investigated in aerated aqueous solutions. Complete and relatively fast substrate degradation was achieved after irradiation with simulated solar light, being the reaction rate dependent on the initial pH. The slower evolution of the mineralization process, which can be accomplished after longer irradiation times, was evidenced by monitoring the dissolved organic carbon decrease ...
