Treatment of Fe(η5-C5H4CH2OH)2 (1) with two equivalents of ClC(O)R (2) (a, R = 2-cC4H3O; b, R = 2-cC4H3S; c, R = 2-cC4H3Se; d, R = 3-cC4H3S) produced the corresponding ferrocenylmethyl carboxylates Fe(η5-C5H4CH2OC(O)R)2 (3a–d), while the reaction of FcCH2OLi (Fc = Fe(η5-C5H5)(η5-C5H4)) with 2,5-(ClC(O))2-cC4H2X (5) (a, X = O; b, X = S; c, X = Se) in a 2:1 molar ratio gave 2,5-(FcCH2OC(O))2-cC4H2X (6a–c). Compounds 3a–d and 6a–c were characterized by elemental analysis, NMR (1H and 13C{1H}) and IR spectroscopy. The molecular ...

We studied facial motor control in elephants, animals with muscular dexterous trunks. Facial nucleus neurons (~54,000 in Asian elephants, ~63,000 in African elephants) outnumbered those of other land-living mammals. The large-eared African elephants had more medial facial subnucleus neurons than Asian elephants, reflecting a numerically more extensive ear-motor control. Elephant dorsal and lateral facial subnuclei were unusual in elongation, neuron numerosity, and a proximal-to-distal neuron size increase. ...

Abstract The synthesis of [Pt{ 2 } 2 (PPh 3 ) 2 ] ( 5 ) (10‐ethinyl‐9‐di( p ‐anisyl)aminoanthracene=alkyne 2 H) in a cis and trans configuration was achieved. Adsorption of cis ‐ 5 on AlOx as well as electrochemical oxidation led to a reductive elimination of 10,10′‐(buta‐1,3‐diyne‐1,4‐diyl)bis(9‐di( p ‐anisyl)amino‐anthracene) ( 6 ). The molecular structures of the alkyne intermediate 2 H, [Pt{ 2 }Cl(PPh 3 ) 2 ] ( 4 ) and butadiyne 6 have been determined by single crystal X‐ray diffraction. Cyclic voltammetry measurements of ...

Sensory nerves are information bottlenecks giving rise to distinct sensory worlds across animal species.1 Here, we investigate trigeminal ganglion2,3 and sensory nerves4 of elephants. The elephant trigeminal ganglion is very large. Its maxillary branch, which gives rise to the infraorbital nerve innervating the trunk, has a larger diameter than the animal's spinal cord, i.e., trunk innervation is more substantive than connections of the brain to the rest of the body. Hundreds of satellite cells ...

Electrochemical and spectroscopic studies suggest a high degree of delocalization between the ruthenium and triarylamine termini through the anthracene bridge, forming a donor–π–acceptor (D–π–A) dye whose π–π* transitions exhibit charge‐transfer ...

Abstract The synthesis of 1‐Fc‐ ( 3 ), 1‐Br‐6‐Fc‐ ( 5 a ), 2‐Br‐7‐Fc‐ ( 7 a ), 1,6‐Fc 2 ‐ ( 5 b ), 2,7‐Fc 2 ‐pyrene ( 7 b ), 3,6‐Fc 2 ‐9,10‐phenanthrenedione ( 10 ), and 3,6‐Fc 2 ‐9,10‐dimethoxyphenanthrene ( 12 ; Fc=Fe(η 5 ‐C 5 H 4 )(η 5 ‐C 5 H 5 )) is discussed. Of these compounds, 10 and 12 form 1D or 2D coordination polymers in the solid state. (Spectro)Electrochemical studies confirmed reversible Fc/Fc + redox events between −130 and 160 mV. 1,6‐ and 2,7‐Substitution in 5 a ( E °′=−130 mV) and 7 a ( E °′=50 mV) influences the redox potentials, whereas ...

Abstract BACKGROUND Pernkopf's atlas of Anatomy contains anatomical plates with detailed images of the peripheral nerves. Its use is controversial due to the author's association with the “Third Reich” and the potential depiction of victims of the Holocaust. The ethical implications of using this atlas for informing surgical planning have not been assessed. OBJECTIVE To (1) assess the role of Pernkopf's atlas in nerve surgeons’ current practice and (2) determine whether a proposal for its ethical handling ...

Crystallization of 5 from CH 2 Cl 2 gave trans ‐[RuCl 2 (N≡CPh) 4 ] ( 6 ). The solid‐state structures of 3 , 4a , b , 5 , 6 and 7a are reported. Complex 4b forms a 3D network, while 6 displays a 2D structure, due to π‐interactions between the benzonitrile ligands. The (spectro)electrochemical behavior of 4a , b and 6 was studied at 25 and –72 °C and ...

Abstract The synthesis of anti ‐[1.1](2,17)(6,13)ferrocenophane‐1,12‐dione ( 2 ) is discussed. By addition of LiAlH 4 , NaBH 4 or Wittig's reagent only one keto group reacted to give HO‐ or c C 3 H 4 ‐functionalized [1.1](2,17)(6,13)ferrocenophan‐12‐hydroxy‐1‐one ( 3 ) and [1.1](2,17)(6,13)ferrocenophan‐12‐cyclopropane‐1‐one ( 4 ). Exchange of CO by CS groups is possible upon addition of Lawesson's reagent to 2 forming [1.1](2,17)(6,13)ferrocenophan‐1,12‐dithioketone ( 5 ). Abstract The synthesis of a σ‐alkynyl gold(I) complex bearing a anthryl π ‐system and a triarylamine functionality has been carried out by a ligand exchange reaction of the acetylene with [Au(PPh 3 )Cl]. Electrochemical oxidation of the triarylamine functionality of the gold complex led to the formation of 10,10′‐(buta‐1,3‐diyne‐1,4‐diyl)bis(9‐di( p ‐tolyl)amino‐anthracene) from two molecules of the gold acetylide.
