Lipotoxicity triggers non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) progression owing to the accumulation of toxic lipids in hepatocytes including saturated fatty acids (SFAs), which activate pro-inflammatory pathways. We investigated the impact of hepatocyte- or circulating-derived small extracellular vesicles (sEV) secreted under NAFLD conditions on liver inflammation and hepatocyte insulin signalling. sEV released by primary mouse hepatocytes, characterised and analysed by lipidomics, were added to ...

The white-lipped peccary Tayassu pecari is a social ungulate that forms the largest groups documented for any tropical forest ungulate species. Since the 1950s the species has become increasingly rare in Mesoamerica, and the more frequent reporting of smaller groups may be related to increased hunting pressure. Here we address the conservation status of this species in terms of its group size and structure, breeding season, population density, and relationship with hunting patterns in the Calakmul ...

Objectives. This study was conducted to elucidate the role of sodium/calcium (Na+/Ca2+) exchange in the mechanism of myocardial stunning. Background. Cellular Ca2+overload mediated by Na+/Ca2+exchange during reperfusion has been proposed as a mechanism for myocardial stunning. Because no specific pharmacologic inhibitors of the exchanger are available, we increased extracellular sodium concentration ([Na]0) during the early phase of reperfusion to decrease the driving force for Ca2+influx through the ...

Consider the following question: does every complete geometric graph K 2 n have a partition of its edge set into n plane spanning trees? We approach this problem from three directions. First, we study the case of convex geometric graphs. It is well known that the complete convex graph K 2 n has a partition into n plane spanning trees. We characterise all such partitions. Second, we give a sufficient condition, which generalises the convex case, for a complete geometric graph to have a partition ...

Ergonomics programs tend to be reactive when considering employees' complaints, absence from work, quantity of work accidents and occupational diseases. When organizations do not anticipate future occurrences with a proper model of risk management, they become vulnerable. In order to organize the Ergonomics Program of a household appliance company in Joinville, a team of 9 persons was structured, and two committees were reactivated. The technical committee discussed ergonomic solutions with the ...

Drosophila buzzatii and D. koepferae coexist in the arid lands of southern South America and exploit different types of cactus as breeding hosts. The former prefers to lay eggs on the rotting pads of prickly pears (genus Opuntia) whereas D. koepferae exhibits greater acceptance for columnar cacti (e.g., Echinopsis terschekii). Here, we demonstrate that the rearing cacti affect male mating success, flies reared in each species' preferred host exhibited enhanced mating success than those raised in secondary ...

We describe the quantitative and qualitative histology and histochemistry for a tropical oyster, C. corteziensis sampled in a coastal lagoon in Northwest, Mexico. Males were larger than immature oysters, with females presenting intermediate values. In this species, mature organisms were found most of the year, and there were at least two strong spawning periods, one in summer and the second in autumn. The presence of mature oocytes most of the year did not allow for differentiation of an annual ...

Most of buildings and structures are usually projected according to two main axes. However, the geographical position of these buildings varies randomly. Such random distributions of the azimuthal positions of structures, in most of the cities, generally, are not accounted for when assessing their seismic risk; certainly, the direction of the seismic loads is another highly random variable. Moreover, an additional important source of uncertainty is related to the structural response, mainly due ...

Abstract BiMnO 3 thin films were deposited on single‐crystal (001)‐oriented SrTiO 3 substrates by rf‐magnetron sputtering method. X‐ray diffraction was used to analyze the crystal structure of the thin films, indicating that the films were monoclinic with two dominant orientation relationships along the substrate. The first is (111) BiMnO 3 ‖ (001) SrTiO 3 ; the second is (222) BiMnO 3 ‖ (002) SrTiO 3 ; other peaks showed that the films were polycrystalline. The roughness of the films was characterized by AFM. ...

Breast cancer (BRCA) is a serious public health problem, as it is the most frequent malignant tumor in women worldwide. BRCA is a molecularly heterogeneous disease, particularly at gene expression (mRNAs) level. Recent evidence shows that coding RNAs represent only 34% of the total transcriptome in a human cell. The rest of the 66% of RNAs are non−coding, so we might be missing relevant biological, clinical or regulatory information. In this report, we identified two novel tumor types from TCGA with ...

The gut-brain-microbiota axis consists of a bilateral communication system that enables gut microbes to interact with the brain, and the latter with the gut. Gut bacteria influence behavior, and both depression and anxiety symptoms are directly associated with alterations in the microbiota. Psychobiotics are defined as probiotics that confer mental health benefits to the host when ingested in a particular quantity through interaction with commensal gut bacteria. The action mechanisms by which bacteria ...

Ammonia (NH3) volatilization is the major source of nitrogen (N) loss resulting from the application of synthetic and organic N fertilizers to croplands. It is well known that in Mediterranean cropping systems, there is a relationship between the intrinsic characteristics of the climate and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, but whether the same relation exists for NH3 emissions remains uncertain. Here, we estimated the impact of edaphoclimatic conditions (including meteorological conditions after N fertilization), ...
