Development of dedicated perennial crops has been indicated as a strategic action to meet the growing demand for biofuels. Breeding of perennial crops, however, is often time- and resource-consuming. As genomics offers a platform from which to learn more about the relationships of genes and phenotypes, its operational use in the context of breeding programs through strategies such as genomic selection promises to foster the development of perennial crops dedicated to biodiesel production by increasing ...

The genetic variability of the Brazilian physic nut (Jatropha curcas) germplasm bank (117 accessions) was assessed using a combination of phenotypic and molecular data. The joint dissimilarity matrix showed moderate correlation with the original matrices of phenotypic and molecular data. However, the correlation between the phenotypic dissimilarity matrix and the genotypic dissimilarity matrix was low. This finding indicated that molecular markers (RAPD and SSR) did not adequately sample the genomic ...

Diallel crosses in an unbalanced scheme were carried out in Jatropha to (i) evaluate the additive and non-additive genetic components; (ii) select parents through the general combining ability; (iii) estimate the specific combining ability used in the crosses; and (iv) verify the existence of the maternal effect and inbreeding depression. The experiment was carried out in a complete diallel scheme with four progenitors, unbalanced for the number of crosses. The experimental design consisted of a randomized ...

Drying is a complex process involving simultaneous heat and mass exchanges, and it is considered one of the oldest unit operations performed for preserving agricultural products. This process requires a significant amount of energy, and researchers have conducted different studies to improve energy efficiency, reduce drying time and preserve product quality. Dryers based on solar energy have gained more space, as this energy source is free and abundant. Thermal energy storage techniques can increase ...

Due to shortages of fossil fuels, and the worldwide concern approximately climate change and global warming, biofuels have become an important source of sustainable energy. Several species can be used to produce biofuels such as soybeans (Glycine max), oil palm (Elaeis guineensis), and Jatropha (Jatropha curcas L.). Therefore, the objective of this paper was to integrate the information available in the literature and report the most promising strategies for genetic and biotechnological progress in ...

The asyaloglycoprotein receptor is a dimer formed by two polypeptide chains abundantly expressed in the liver (RHL-1 and RHL-2). Using specific primers for the two polypeptide chains we measured, by semiquantitative reverse PCR (RT-PCR), the corresponding mRNAs in different rat tissues. We found that both RHL-1 and RHL-2 mRNAs are expressed in the liver, kidney, brain and thyroid. Under the same conditions we did not detect any specific mRNA in the spleen. In the brain these sequences are expressed ...

The genetic diversity of Brazilian Jatropha (Jatropha curcas) germplasm collection (BJGC), which consists of 192 accessions, has been previously reported based on the evaluation of a limited number of RAPD and SSR markers. In addition, accessions from other countries (Guatemala and Mexico) were introduced to this collection without prior information on their relation with the existing collection. Thus the objective of this study were to develop and validate a panel for high-density genome-wide molecular ...

We studied the role of various intracellular pathways in thyroglobulin secretion. The P2 agonists (ATP,ADP,GTP), 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA), and protein kinase A activators stimulate thyroglobulin secretion in cells grown without TSH. The effects of these agents are additive. Pertussis toxin partially inhibits the effect of ATP but has no effect on the action of GTP. ATP and GTP increase cytosolic calcium (279±16% and 302±22%, respectively) while TPA and TSH (1 mU/ml) do not. Thus, both ...

Abstract. The development phase (DP) of the EUMETSAT Satellite Application Facility for Support to Operational Hydrology and Water Management (H-SAF) led to the design and implementation of several precipitation products, after 5 yr (2005–2010) of activity. Presently, five precipitation estimation algorithms based on data from passive microwave and infrared sensors, on board geostationary and sun-synchronous platforms, function in operational mode at the H-SAF hosting institute to provide near real- ...

Thus, the aim of this study was to select J. curcas genotypes for bioenergy purpose considering multitrait, multiharvest and effective population size. To this end, a data set with 70 J. curcas families, obtained through controlled crosses, evaluated in a randomized block design, with six replications, three plants per plot, spaced at 4 × 2 m was used. The following traits were evaluated: plant height in the 2014 ...

Genome-wide selection (GWS) has been becoming an essential tool in the genetic breeding of long-life species, as it increases the gain per time unit. This study had a hypothesis that GWS is a tool that can decrease the breeding cycle in Jatropha. Models were developed throughout the harvests to evaluate their applicability in predicting genetic values in later harvests. For this purpose, ...
