Estrogens and phytoestrogens have neuroprotective effect against neuronal damage induced by cerebral ischemia /reperfusion (I/R) injury. In preceding studies, the phytoestrogen effects have been assessed by administration previous to the ischemic period, conditions which are unusual to apply to the treatment of human stroke. Here we present a study on neuroprotection afforded by genistein on rat embryo cortical neurons subjected to oxygen and glucose deprivation (OGD) followed by re-oxigenation, when ...

In this paper we study the corrosion behavior of nickel-based superalloys (Inconel 690, Inconel 718, Incoloy 800, Incoloy 825), compared with commercial steels (carbon Steel 1018 and stainless steel 304), in acid (10% H2SO4 and 10 % CH3COOH) and H2O at room temperature, by electrochemical noise technique, with sampling 1024 points per second. Statistical analysis of electrochemical noise technique yielded LI localization index, the type of corrosion and the noise resistance as well as the corrosion rate. ...

We review the dynamics of particle laden interfaces, both particle monolayers and particle+surfactant monolayers. We also discuss the use of the Brownian motion of microparticles trapped at fluid interfaces for measuring the shear rheology of surfactant and polymer monolayers. We describe the basic concepts of interfacial rheology and the different experimental methods for measuring both dilational and shear surface complex moduli over a broad range of frequencies, with emphasis in the micro-rheology ...

Lithium cations are known to form complexes with the oxygen atoms of poly(oxyethylene) chains. The effect of Li+ on the surface properties of three block-copolymers containing poly(oxyethylene) (PEO) have been studied. Two types of copolymers have been studied, a water soluble one of the pluronic family, PEO–b-PPO–b-PEO, PPO being poly(propyleneoxyde), and two water insoluble ones: PEO–b-PS and PEO–b-PS–b-PEO, PS being polystyrene. In the case of the pluronic the adsorption kinetics, the equilibrium ...

Abstract In education from the standpoint of looking for new techniques to train staff more efficiently, especially when they have a lot of turnover of employees, the technology always helps to improve on this area. For the statistical process control, data acquisition of the manufacturing processes is very important and this can be affected if the technician who use the measure tools doesn’t know how to use them correctly. On the other hand augmented reality (AR) is an alternative to the traditional ...

Quality control does not concern only to a finished product, nowadays measuring technologies control all the fabrication process in an active way. If product quality does not meet the customer specifications exists the risk of even lose projects. Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is a systemic disease endemic to most of Latin America, with greatest impact in rural areas. The taxonomic status of one of the best studied Paracoccidioides isolates (Pb01) as P. brasiliensis remains unresolved due to its genomic differences from the other three previously described phylogenetic species (S1, PS2 and PS3; Carrero et al., 2008. These patients, inevitably rendered hypothyroid, are traditionally switched to T3 for 3–4 weeks prior to withdrawing all thyroid hormones for an additional 2–3 weeks. Tropical forests undergo continuous transformation to other land uses, resulting in landscapes typified by forest fragments surrounded by anthropogenic habitats. Small forest fragments, specifically strip-shaped remnants flanking streams (referred to as riparian remnants), can be particularly important for the maintenance and conservation of biodiversity within highly fragmented forests. The most prevailing VAM fungus that infected roots was Glomus sp, resembling Glomusfasciculatum. Pectins are linear macromolecules with carboxylate and methoxylate groups. That may serve as coagulant-flocculant agents. At the same time it is expected that carboxylate groups act as a chelating agent and favor the entrapment of heavy metals. The effect of ethanol on the metabolism of Oenococcus oeni, the bacterium responsible for the malolactic fermentation of wine, is still scarcely understood. Here, we characterized the global metabolic response in O. oeni to increasing ethanol contents, ranging from 0 to 12% (v/v). We first optimized a wine-like, defined culture medium, MaxOeno, to allow sufficient bacterial growth to be able to quantitate different metabolites in batch cultures of O. oeni. Then, taking advantage of the recently reconstructed ...

The dry forest of southern Ecuador and northern Perú (called the Tumbesian region) is known for its high diversity, endemism, and healthy conservation state. (b) Are anthropogenic activities affecting the composition and structure of the forest? ...

Abstract Amazonian forests are extraordinarily diverse, but the estimated species richness is very much debated. Here, we apply an ensemble of parametric estimators and a novel technique that includes conspecific spatial aggregation to an extended database of forest plots with up-to-date taxonomy. We show that the species abundance distribution of Amazonia is best approximated by a logseries with aggregated individuals, where aggregation increases with rarity. By averaging several methods to estimate ...
