The aim of this study was to evaluate the degree of conversion, cytotoxicity, solubility and pH of photopolymerizable calciumbased cements submitted to preheating. The degree of conversion was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared, cytotoxicity by the MTT test and solubility through loss of mass. The data were subjected to statistical tests (ANOVA / Tukey's, p<0.05). The photopolymerizable materials showed a low degree of conversion, regardless of preheating. All materials caused a reduction in cell ...

To assess, in vitro, the influence of heat air treatment on cytotoxicity and degree of conversion (DC) of universal self-etch adhesives (Ambar Universal APS, Scotchbond Universal Adhesive, and Tetric N-Bond Universal) in an NIH/3T3 fibroblast cell culture. Samples were divided into three groups: 1) no heat treatment (control), 2) 37°C and 3) 60°C heat treatment before photopolymerization. Cytotoxicity was analyzed by MTT assay and the DC by FTIR. All adhesives heated at 60°C showed reduced cytotoxicity ...

The length of stay (LOS) of a surgical procedure is influenced both by the real need for medical and nursing care of the patient and also by the practice style of each unit, which can include unjustified stays. The aim of this work was to estimate the appropriate LOS for appendectomy and its differences with the LOS observed in practice. Two hundred and forty-nine medical records (249 admission days and 1447 successive stays) for patients over 6 years old who had had an appendectomy in 1992 were classified ...

Design Retrospective, multicenter, observational case series. Methods This is a retrospective case series review of 9 patients (10 eyes) from 5 centers with paracentral acute middle maculopathy lesions and previously unreported retinal vascular etiologies. Treatment-resistant auditory verbal hallucinations (TRAVH) are a relatively prevalent and devastating symptom in patients with schizophrenia (SCZ). Even though their pathological mechanisms are poorly understood, they seem to differ from those underlying non-hallucinating SCZ. In this study, we characterise structural brain changes in SCZ patients with TRAVH. With respect to non-hallucinating patients and healthy controls, we studied macrostructural grey matter changes through cortical thickness and ...

Summary In this paper, we conduct statistical analyses for two Amazon cloud pricing models: on demand and spot. On demand cloud instances are charged a fixed price and can only be terminated by the user, with very high availability. On the other hand, spot instances are charged a dynamic price determined by a market‐driven model and can be revoked by the provider when the spot price becomes higher than the user‐defined price, having possibly low availability. Our analysis for on‐demand instances ...

The price of virtual machine instances in the Amazon EC2 spot model is often much lower than in the on-demand counterpart. However, this price reduction comes with a decrease in the availability guarantees. Several mechanisms have been proposed to analyze the spot model in the last years, employing different strategies. Abstract Is ‘knowledge society’ yet another empty slogan? More than ever, ‘knowledge is power’. But we can hardly affirm that the society we live in is based on the vigour of knowledge. The market price placed on knowledge fails to provide it with the needed qualitative impetus. Inequities remain the blind spot of technological systems. To be sure, we are living in an information society at higher scales of exchange, with ‘a great deal of information, but little knowledge’. We may indeed be restoring ...

The use of vector surveillance tools for preventing dengue disease requires fine assessment of risk, in order to improve vector control activities. Nevertheless, the thresholds between vector detection and dengue fever occurrence are currently not well established. In Belo Horizonte (Minas Gerais, Brazil), dengue has been endemic for several years. From January 2007 to June 2008, the dengue vector Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti was monitored by ovitrap, the sticky-trap MosquiTRAP™ and larval surveys in ...

ABSTRACT: This article discusses the epidemic situation of Covid-19 in Brazil, in the face of the emergence of a new strain called P.1, which is more transmissible and may be associated with reinfection. Given the collapse of hospital care in Manaus in January 2021 and the results of three recent preprints, each that reports increased transmissibility of the P.1 variant, we propose some urgent measures. Genomic surveillance based on multi-step diagnostics, starting with RT-PCR type tests and up ...

We aimed to evaluate technical aspects and the clinical relevance of a simultaneous confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscope and a high-speed, high-resolution, spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SDOCT) device for retinal imaging. The principle of confocal scanning laser imaging provides a high resolution of retinal and choroidal vasculature with low light exposure. Enhanced contrast, details, and image sharpness are generated using confocality. The real-time SDOCT provides a new level of ...

In recent years, researchers have proposed the use of nanoparticles suspended in the working fluid (nanorefrigerants) of vapour compression refrigeration cycles so as to increase the efficiency of the system. It takes a number of variables, notably, operational parameters and thermophysical properties to make such a system to work with an advantageous performance. In this regard, near-critical properties of nanorefrigerants are of particular importance, yet they are scarce in the literature. The ...

Nitrite and nitrate restore deficient endogenous nitric oxide (NO) production as they are converted back to NO, and therefore complement the classic enzymatic NO synthesis. Circulating nitrate and nitrite must cross membrane barriers to produce their effects and increased nitrate concentrations may attenuate the nitrite influx into cells, decreasing NO generation from nitrite. Moreover, xanthine oxidoreductase (XOR) mediates NO formation from nitrite and nitrate. However, no study has examined whether ...
