Abstract Cellular senescence is a state of permanent growth arrest. It can be triggered by telomere shortening (replicative senescence) or prematurely induced by stresses such as DNA damage, oncogene overactivation, loss of tumor suppressor genes, oxidative stress, tissue factors, and others. Advances in techniques and experimental designs have provided new evidence about the biology of senescent cells (SnCs) and their importance in human health and disease. This review aims to describe the main aspects ...

Cellular senescence is an irreversible block of cellular division, and induction of senescence is being considered for treatment of many cancer types, mainly those resistant to classical pro-apoptotic therapies. Resveratrol (Rsv) and quercetin (Quer), two natural polyphenols, are able to induce senescence in different cancer models, including gliomas, the most common and aggressive primary brain tumor. These polyphenols modulate the activity of several proteins involved in cell growth and death in ...

We use a simple spring-block system as a qualitative analogous of a seismic fault. The role of the asperities present in a real seismic fault is played by sandpapers of several grades. With this experimental array Gutenberg–Richter type-laws are obtained. We also observed that the maximum characteristic event in each experimental run depends on both the mass of the sliding blocks and the age of the sandpapers used at the interface between the blocks and the rough track.

ABSTRACT: After years of pesticide application, often indiscriminately, damage has been caused to the environment, as well as to agronomic crops grown in contaminated areas. In water treatment, techniques based on physical and/or physicochemical processes are used, being formed secondary oxidizing agents responsible for the mineralization of contaminants present in the herbicides, thus causing the degradation process. However, few studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of these techniques in ...

The main advantage of this test lies on the application of dynamical load – unload cycles, generally with values of few mN and displacements below 200 nm, granting more information about the material beyond hardness, as elastic modulus, creep, fracture resistance, ...

The presence of lymphovascular invasion is considered a prognostic determinant for different human neoplasms and is frequently taken into account by surgeons and oncologists to determine patients' treatment. However, the exact frequency of this microscopic event and its prognostic impact for patients affected by adenoid cystic carcinoma (AdCC) remains unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study was to carry out a systematic review and meta-analysis to address the prevalence and the prognostic potential ...

In this paper we focus on networked control systems subject to data dropouts. We consider that the controller communicates with the plant through multiple independent erasure channels, and that each actuator sends acknowledgement packages to the controller. We restrict our attention to the optimal design of a class of controllers that embeds a data dropout compensator and where, besides this compensation mechanism, all processing is an affine function of the available data. Our first result shows ...

Second, we propose an image denoising method based on the enhanced sparse representation ...

This paper presents results to assure the almost sure stability of switching stochastic nonlinear systems. The switching rule governing the parameters of the system is driven by independent and identically distributed random variables. In this scenario, we prove that the switching nonlinear system is almost surely stable when appropriate matrices have spectral radius less than one. The result is particularly useful for applications, as shown in the paper by the application for an automotive electronic ...
