Multimodal fusion is an effective approach to better understand brain diseases. However, most such instances have been limited to pair-wise fusion; because there are often more than two imaging modalities available per subject, there is a need for approaches that can combine multiple datasets optimally. In this paper, we extended our previous two-way fusion model called "multimodal CCA + joint ICA", to three or N-way fusion, that enables robust identification of correspondence among N data types and ...

Phagocytosis of Francisella tularensis by rhesus monkey peripheral neutrophils (PMN, was assessed by autoradiography, electron microscopy, and biochemical techniques. PMN, in contrast to mononuclear phagocytes, were unable to phagocytize F. tularensis in vitro in the absence of immune serum. It is postulated that in the nonimmune host the innate inability of PMN to phagocytize F. tularensis deletes one of the possible mechanisms of host defense to bacterial infection and thus permits the early dissemination ...

Human strongyloidiasis varies from a chronic but limited infection in normal hosts to hyperinfection in patients treated with corticosteroids or with HTLV-1 co-infection. Regulatory T cells dampen immune responses to infections. How human strongyloidiasis is controlled and how HTLV-1 infection affects this control are not clear. We hypothesize that HTLV-1 leads to dissemination of Strongyloides stercoralis infection by augmenting regulatory T cell numbers, which in turn down regulate the immune ...

The liquid-liquid phase separation of a binary solvent can be arrested by colloidal particles trapped at the interface [K. Stratford, Science 309, 2198 (2005)]. We show experimentally that the colloidal network so formed can remain stable after fully remixing the liquids, creating a new type of gel in which colloids in a single-phase solvent have locally planar coordination. We argue that this structure is likely maintained by primary-minimum Derjaguin-Landau-Verweg-Overbeek bonding of our charged ...

Regulatory T cells (Tregs) blunt uncontrolled immune responses. In advanced human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, the total number of Tregs is decreased, but the proportion of T cells with a regulatory phenotype is highly variable. We studied CD4(+)CD25(+)FoxP3(+) T cells from patients successfully treated with combination antiretroviral therapy (ART). The proportion of CD4(+)CD25(+)FoxP3(+) cells transiently increased and then decreased from a median of 13% at baseline to 5.1% at 48 weeks, ...

The objective of this study was to assess the association of SNP in the thyroglobulin gene, including a previously reported marker in current industry use, with marbling score in beef cattle. Three populations, designated GPE6, GPE7, and GPE8, were studied. The GPE6 population sampled breeds that could be used as alternative germplasm sources in beef cattle production, including Wagyu, Swedish Red and White, Friesian, and Norwegian Red. The GPE7 population sampled 7 popular beef cattle breeds used ...

Martín Montes, Dorothy E. Lewis, César Sánchez, Diego López de Castilla, Edward A. Graviss, Carlos Seas, Eduardo Gotuzzo, A. Clinton White,

We characterized regulatory T cells from antiretroviral-naive HIV patients by flow cytometry. The proportion of CD4 cells positive for CD25 and Foxp3 was increased, mainly in those with CD4 cell counts less than 200 cells/microl. The total number of Foxp3-positive cells correlated with the CD4 cell count. Further studies are needed on whether Foxp3-positive cell numbers or function explain the susceptibility to autoimmune and inflammatory diseases seen in some patients with advanced HIV.

The objectives of this study were to 1) estimate the allelic frequencies in US beef cattle of 6 DNA markers reported to be associated with variation in dairy production traits; and 2) evaluate the association of these markers with beef production traits. Several genetic markers have been associated with milk yield or composition, including polymorphisms in secreted phosphoprotein 1 (SPP1; also called osteopontin), growth hormone receptor (GHR), casein S1 (CSN1S1), diacylglycerol O-acyltransferase 1 ( ...
