Background. Leishmaniases are diseases with a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations including cutaneous (CL) and visceral (VL) forms. Many factors may affect their occurrence and expansion including environmental, geographic, and social conditions. In the past two decades, Divinópolis, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, has exhibited the potential for a disease outbreak, with the appearance of CL, and VL cases (human and canine). Hence, this study was initiated to monitor public knowledge of the disease. ...

In nature, tadpoles encounter food on substrates oriented at different angles (e.g. vertically along stems, horizontally on the bottom). We manipulated the orientation of food-covered surfaces to test how different orientations of surfaces affect tadpoles’ feeding efficiency. We studied taxa that differed in the oral morphology of their larvae and position in the water column. We hypothesized that species would differ in their ability to graze upon surfaces at different orientations and that differences ...

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether immersion of a denture surface in lemongrass extract (LGE) has effects on C. albicans biofilms, human cell viability and denture surface. Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal fungicidal concentration (MFC) were performed for LGE against C. albicans. For biofilm analysis, discs were fabricated using a denture acrylic resin with surface roughness standardization. C. albicans biofilms were developed on saliva-coated discs, and the effects ...

The comparison of two methods based on online solid phase extraction–liquid chromatography with UV (SPE–LC–UV) or mass spectrometry detection (SPE–LC–MS/MS) for the simultaneous quantification of sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) and trimethoprim (TMP) is presented. The methods were validated and proved to be accurate. The analysis of standard samples for SMZ at concentrations of 0.5, 1.5, 25 and 50 μg/mL demonstrated a relative standard deviation of less than 6% for both methods (n = 18), while TMP samples at concentrations ...

Abstract Many remote sensing‐based evapotranspiration (RSBET) algorithms have been proposed in the past decades and evaluated using flux tower data, mainly over North America and Europe. Model evaluation across South America has been done locally or using only a single algorithm at a time. Here, we provide the first evaluation of multiple RSBET models, at a daily scale, across a wide variety of biomes, climate zones, and land uses in South America. We used meteorological data from 25 flux towers ...

Caatinga is a Brazilian dry ecosystem that occupies around 1 million km2 and is one of the largest tropical dry forests of the world. About 46% of the area that was originally covered has been deforested. Land use can cause pronounced reduction in soil carbon stocks that play a major role in the global carbon cycle. The objective of this study was to improve our understanding of the effect of land use on oxidizable carbon fractions, total carbon stocks and humic substances in different layers of ...

Fever is a regulated increase in body temperature and a component of the acute-phase response, triggered mainly after the invasion of pathogens in the body. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are generated during the physiological and pathological processes, and can act as both signalling molecules as well as promoters of oxidative stress. The objectives of the study was to evaluate the mercury contamination in sediments of six lagoons located in the north region of Rio de Janeiro State, trying to relate the Hg concentrations with factors that could influence it's mobility, such as organic carbon. The highest values observed in the superficial sediments in lakes like Campelo (349,6 µg.kg -1) suggested a recent Hg input into the system. The correlation Hg/Organic carbon was positive for most areas, indicating that the organic carbon ...

In this study, the biosurfactant produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa was evaluated in view of its ability to be used in Microbial-Enhanced Oil Recovery (MEOR). This microorganism was isolated from a soil artificially contaminated with crude oil and used to produce rhamnolipid using glycerol as the carbon source. The biosurfactant efficiently reduced water surface tension from 72 to 35.26 mN/m at its critical micelle concentration of 127 mg/L and emulsification rate (E24) of 69% for the crude oil. Furthermore, ...

Abstract Biosurfactants are surfactants biologically produced by microorganisms, presenting several advantages when compared to synthetic surfactants. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is known for producing rhamnolipids, considered one of the most interesting types of biosurfactants due to their high yields, when compared to other types. In this work, the production of rhamnolipid from P. aeruginosa was optimized. At first, the Plackett–Burman design was used to select most significant variables affecting ...

Composites reinforced with natural lignocellulosic fibers (NLFs) are gaining relevance as the worldwide demand for renewable and sustainable materials increases. To develop novel natural composites with satisfactory properties, less common NLFs should also be investigated. Among these, the Cyperus malaccensis (CM), a type of sedge fiber, is already used in simple items like ropes, furniture, and paper, but has not yet been investigated as composite reinforcement for possible engineering applications. ...

Firearms threat has always been a matter of personal concern, especially to soldiers in armed conflicts as well as police officers and civilians involved with public security. A multilayered armor system (MAS) is intended to personal protection against high kinetic energy ammunition, such as that used in rifles. Cements from alkali-activated reactions are unleashing opportunities for the future application of inorganic polymers, known as geopolymers. These materials are eco-friendly, since their manufacturing process does not involve carbon dioxide (CO2) emission and it makes possible the use of industrial waste as raw material. Research on new antimicrobial agents is needed, as more and more microorganisms that cause antibiotic-resistant diseases are emerging commercially. In this group, we can find strains of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, which are highly opportunistic species. Faced with this perspective, research using essential oils present in plants is emerging as a therapeutic alternative for the treatment of antimicrobial infections. Many of these oils have, in their composition, monoterpene α-pinene, ...

Abstract The development of dislocation structures associated with work hardening stages and dynamic strain aging (DSA) is investigated in an AISI 301 austenitic stainless steel plastically deformed in tension at 500 and 600 °C. In the first work hardening stage, up to 22% of plastic strain at 500 °C and 18% at 600 °C, incipient dislocation cells begin to be formed and are observed in association with {1 0 0} TEM diffraction pattern. At the transition point from first to second stage, the cells are ...

A typical MAS to stand high impact energy 7.62 mm bullet has a front ceramic followed by an aramid fabric laminate, such as Kevlar™. Since both the army and municipal police personnel might need to wear an armor vest, a large number of vests needs to be supplied. In the case of Kevlar™, one of the most expensive ...
