The effectiveness of avoidance of house-dust-mite allergen (Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus 1 [Der p1]) in the management of asthma is uncertain. We conducted a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study of allergen-impermeable bed covers involving 1122 adults with asthma. The primary outcomes were the mean morning peak expiratory flow rate over a four-week period during the run-in phase and at six months and the proportion of patients who discontinued inhaled corticosteroid therapy as part ...

Robert Förster, Edward D. Crandall,

A stopped-flow rapid-reaction apparatus was used to follow the time course of extracellular pH in a human red cell suspension following a sudden increase in PCO2. The extracellular pH change was slow (t1/2 similar to 3.5 s) considering the presence of carbonic anhydrase in the cells. When carbonic anhydrase was added to the extracellular fluid, the half-time was reduced to less than 20 ms. The explanation for these phenomena is that the equilibration of H+ across the red cell membrane is rate-limited ...

• Five patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PES) and glaucoma developed extensive zonular dialyses during extracapsular cataract extractions. Weakness of the lens zonules or their attachments to the ciliary processes, which has been described in association with PES, may explain this complication. We believe that patients with PES are at particular risk for developing large zonular dialyses during extracapsular surgery. Preoperative phakodonesis, anterior chamber depth asymmetry, and excessive lens ...

Opioid receptors and enkephalinergic nerve terminals are widely distributed throughout respiratory-related regions of the brainstem and in the phrenic motor nucleus of the spinal cord (Xia & Haddad, 1991; Laferrière et al. 1999; Wang et al. 2002; Haji et al. 2003a; Lonergan et al. 2003a,b; Strornetta et al. 2003). Since opiate drugs given systemically will act on opioid receptors with conjoint selectivity in all respiratory regions, respiratory depression is unlikely to be dependent on actions at a ...

Background Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunts (TIPS) are an established method for the treatment of the complications of portal hypertension. Recent reports have suggested that TIPS require frequent follow-up and may interfere with orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT), Methods Retrospective chart review was performed of ultrasound studies, angiographic studies, and complications of the first 100 patients treated consecutively with TIPS from February 1992 through October 1995. Our opponents contend that nanolitre microinjections into preBötC may not target critical preBötC neurons, and claim that drug diffusion from microdialysis probes located 0.5–1.1 mm from preBötC are superior (Montandon et al. 2011). Microinjection studies rely on coordinates and functional properties of the preBötC (mixture of ventral respiratory column (VRC) I- and E-neurons) in addition to rapid onset tachypnoeic responses (Mustapic et al. 2010) to d,l-homocysteic acid (DLH) microinjections (Schwarzacher ...

The Problems , which occupy pp. 859-967 of the Berlin Aristotle, have probably been less read and studied than any other treatise in the Aristotelian Corpus; they contain, however, a vast quantity of interesting information on a great variety of subjects, and an enquiry into their composition may be not without interest.

Collaborative research between educational institutions and health agencies is being increasingly used as a method of achieving joint outcomes and bringing together theory and practice. This paper reports on the experiences of collaboration that arose out of just such a project carried out in a residential aged care setting. The research team included university academics, two nurses in management positions in the aged care facility and a senior research assistant. In this paper, we explore some ...
