Broadband, large dynamic range GEOS data from four aftershocks (M_L ∼ 2 to 3) of the 1983 Goodnow, New York, earthquake, recorded at hard-rock sites 2 to 7 km away from the epicentral area, are used to study rupture processes of three larger events, with an M_L = 1.6 event as the Green's function event. We analyze the spectra and spectral ratios of ground velocity at frequencies up to 100 Hz, and conclude that (1) there are resolvable P-wave f_(max) (51 and 57 Hz) at two sites; (2) there is abundant information ...

(Abridged) We describe here the most ambitious survey currently planned in the optical, the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST). A vast array of science will be enabled by a single wide-deep-fast sky survey, and LSST will have unique survey capability in the faint time domain. The LSST design is driven by four main science themes: probing dark energy and dark matter, taking an inventory of the Solar System, exploring the transient optical sky, and mapping the Milky Way. LSST will be a wide-field ...

Hearing impairment in older people is thought to arise from impaired temporal processing in auditory circuits. We used a systems-level (scalp recordings) and a microcircuit-level (extracellular recordings) approach to investigate how aging affects the sensitivity to temporal envelopes of speech-like sounds in rats. Scalp-recorded potentials suggest an age-related increase in sensitivity to temporal regularity along the ascending auditory pathway. The underlying cellular changes in the midbrain were ...

Cannabis is the most widely used illicit drug. Many individuals are incidentally exposed to secondhand cannabis smoke, but little is known about the effects of this exposure. This report examines the physiological, subjective, and behavioral/cognitive effects of secondhand cannabis exposure, and the influence of room ventilation on these effects.Non-cannabis-using individuals were exposed to secondhand cannabis smoke from six individuals smoking cannabis (11.3% THC) ad libitum in a specially constructed ...

In an RNAi screen targeting chromatin regulators, Vakoc and colleagues find that maintenance of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) requires Brd4, which binds to acetylated histones to influence gene transcription. Brd4 regulates expression of the oncogene Myc and a Myc-driven gene-expression program that permits leukaemia cells to self-renew. JQ1, a small molecule that inhibits Brd4 function, has anti-leukaemic effects in a mouse model and inhibits the proliferation of primary human AML cells, suggesting ...

Aim: Nasal transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) stimulation with capsaicin produces serous and mucinous secretion in the human nasal airway. The primary aim of this study was to examine topical effects of various TRP ion channel agonists on symptoms and secretion of specific mucins: mucin 5 subtype AC (MUC5AC) and B (MUC5B). Methods: Healthy individuals were subjected to nasal challenges with TRPV1 agonists (capsaicin, olvanil and anandamide), TRP ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) agonists (cinnamaldehyde ...

In dynamic, stochastic manufacturing systems, production planners and manufacturing engineers can benefit from understanding how rescheduling strategies affect system performance. This knowledge will help these experts design and operate better manufacturing planning and control systems. This paper presents new analytical models that can predict the performance of rescheduling strategies and quantify the trade-offs between different performance measures. In the parallel machine systems under consideration, ...

This article presents initial results in the search for analytical models that can predict the performance of one-machine systems under periodic and event-driven rescheduling strategies in an environment where different job types arrive dynamically for processing and set-up must incur when production changes from one product type to another. The scheduling algorithm considered uses a first-in firstout dispatching rule to sequence jobs and it also groups jobs with similar types to save set-up time. ...

Major depression may require antidepressant treatment for several years. This necessitates consideration of the long-term effects of antidepressants on multiple clinical endpoints. The antidepressants paroxetine and fluvoxamine are potent in vitro inhibitors of CYP2D6 and CYP1A2 isozymes, respectively. CYP2D6 and CYP1A2 are important for the clearance of 30 or more frequently used medications. Moreover, CYP1A2 also contributes to metabolism of 17beta-estradiol and metabolic activation of environmental ...
