It is generally assumed that type 2 diabetes increases the risk of cognitive dysfunction in old age. As type 2 diabetes is frequently diagnosed before the age of 50, diabetes-related cognitive dysfunction may also occur before the age of 50. Therefore, we investigated the association of type 2 diabetes with cognitive function in people aged 35–82 years. In a cross-sectional study comprising 4,135 participants of the Prevention of Renal and Vascular ENd-stage Disease study (52% men; mean age (SD), ...

Butler (2010: Experiment 3) showed that retrieval practice enhanced transfer to a new knowledge domain compared to rereading. The first experiment of the present study was a direct replication of Butler's third experiment. Participants studied text passages and then either reread them three times or went through three cycles of cued recall questions (i.e., retrieval practice) with feedback. As in Butler's experiment (2010), an advantage of retrieval practice on the final far transfer test emerged after ...

In this work, a novel detection assay for the new psychoactive substance (NPS) 2-methoxiphenidine (2-MXP) and other diarylethylamines is introduced. The assay is based on the competitive displacement of dye molecules from molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) by the target molecule. The assay was fully characterized by studying the affinity of the MIP for six common dyes, expressed as the binding factor (BF). The results of this study indicate that the mathematical relationship between the BF of a dye ...

Surface detection of bacteria has been proven difficult and time‐consuming. Different recovery techniques yield varying numbers of bacteria. Subsequently, bacterial culturing, used for identification of these bacteria, will take several hours. In this article, the potential of a newly developed thermal biomimetic sensor for the detection of bacteria on surfaces is described. Previously this thermal biomimetic sensor has proven to be able to detect and quantify different bacteria in various liquid ...

The use of Molecularly Imprinted Polymers (MIPs) as recognition elements in biosensing devices has increased over the past decade, with MIP-based receptor layers being combined with impedance, quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and thermal readout methods such as the so-called “Heat-Transfer Method” (HTM). One of the main challenges in MIP-based biosensing is the production of uniformly covered, reproducible sensing layers. The potential of direct surface grafting of molecularly imprinted polymeric receptor ...

This manuscript describes the production of molecularly imprinted polymer nanoparticles (nanoMIPs) for the cardiac biomarkers heart-fatty acid binding protein (H-FABP) and ST2 by solid-phase synthesis, and their use as synthetic antibodies in a multiplexed sensing platform. Analysis by surface plasmon resonance (SPR) shows that the affinity of the nanoMIPs is similar to that of commercially available antibodies. The particles are coated onto the surface of thermocouples and inserted into 3D-printed ...

Biopolymers possess highly favorable properties for electrochemical biosensing such as their inherent biocompatibility, inexpensive nature, and strong interfacial adhesion. In this mini-review, we will focus on chitosan and polydopamine, two of the most commonly used biopolymers, for electrochemical sensing applications. Chitosan is a polysaccharide that exhibits high chemical resistance, offers straightforward modification and cross-linking, and possesses antibacterial properties and mucoadhesion. ...

Glucose bio-sensing technologies have received increasing attention in the last few decades, primarily due to the fundamental role that glucose metabolism plays in diseases (e.g., diabetes). Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) could offer an alternative means of analysis to a field that is traditionally dominated by enzyme-based devices, posing superior chemical stability, cost-effectiveness, and ease of fabrication. Their integration into sensing devices as recognition elements has been extensively ...

Many proteins that are implicated in human disease are posttranslationally modified. This includes the microtubule-associated protein tau that is deposited in a hyperphosphorylated form in brains of Alzheimer's disease patients. The focus of this review article is on the physiological and pathological phosphorylation of tau; the relevance of aberrant phosphorylation for disease; the role of kinases and phosphatases in this process; its modeling in transgenic mice, flies, and worms; and implications ...

Tested, among 110 Dutch undergraduate students, the effects of action frame (AF) under conditions of fear arousal (FA). We predicted an interaction effect between FA and AF that would show that high FA paired with loss information leads to a more positive evaluation of the recommended action than do combinations of (a) high FA with gain information and (b) low FA with either loss or gain information. In the high-threat condition, Ss read information that stressed the severity of breast cancer and the ...

Methane-hydrogen capacitively coupled r.f. (13.56MHz) discharges were studied using a mass spectrometer. The relative concentrations of neutral species (CH4, C2Hx) were investigated in a broad range of discharge parameters (pressure 1.5–50 Pa, residence time 1–45 s, and r.f. power 0–120 W) and correlated with deposition rate measurements. It is shown that the chemical plasma processes (C2Hx) formation and deposition characteristics (deposition rate) are strongly correlated with the degree of methane ...

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is characterized by cognitive and behavioral changes and, in a significant subset of patients, Parkinsonism. Histopathologically, FTD frequently presents with tau-containing lesions, which in familial cases result from mutations in the MAPT gene encoding tau. Here we present a novel transgenic mouse strain (K3) that expresses human tau carrying the FTD mutation K369I. K3 mice develop a progressive histopathology that is reminiscent of that in human FTD with the K369I ...

The aniline derivative 3 is a key building block of rilpivirine (TMC278) 2, a new potent NNRTI compound under clinical evaluation. In this paper we describe the development of a new synthesis of 3 based on a Heck coupling between a halogenated aniline and acrylonitrile using low loading of Pd/C (0.5 mol %) as catalyst. This resulted in a process which has been successfully transferred into production on 2400 mol-scale (6000 L reactor)

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by amyloid-β (Aβ) and tau deposition in brain. It has emerged that Aβ toxicity is tau dependent, although mechanistically this link remains unclear. Here, we show that tau, known as axonal protein, has a dendritic function in postsynaptic targeting of the Src kinase Fyn, a substrate of which is the NMDA receptor (NR). Missorting of tau in transgenic mice expressing truncated tau (Δtau) and absence of tau in tau−/− mice both disrupt postsynaptic targeting of ...

Alzheimer's disease (AD) brains are characterized by amyloid-β-containing plaques and hyperphosphorylated tau-containing neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs); however, in frontotemporal dementia, the tau pathology manifests in the absence of overt amyloid-β plaques. Therapeutic strategies so far have primarily been targeting amyloid-β, although those targeting tau are only slowly beginning to emerge. Here, we identify sodium selenate as a compound that reduces tau phosphorylation both in vitro and in vivo. ...

Variation in estrogen level is reported by some to affect brain maturation and memory. The neurobiological basis for this may include modulation of the serotonergic system. No neuroimaging studies have directly examined the effect of extended estrogen therapy (ET), on the 5-HT2A receptor in human brain. We investigated the effect of long-term ET on cortical 5-HT2A receptor availability in postmenopausal women. In a cross-sectional study, we compared cortical 5-HT2A receptor availability in 17 postmenopausal ...

The environment of space offers special challenges for the lubrication of components in sliding and rolling mechanisms. Hydrogenated diamond-like carbon (DLC) films are being studied as solid lubricant coatings to simultaneously fulfil specifications regarding wear resistance and low friction behaviour under ambient atmosphere and in vacuum. In this paper, the tribological behaviour of highly hydrogenated DLC coatings (∼50 at% hydrogen) is assessed. Coating composition was optimised on flat AISI 52100 ...
