Summary Human gut bifidobacteria rely on ATP‐binding cassette (ABC) transporters for oligosaccharide uptake. Multiple oligosaccharide‐specific solute‐binding protein (SBP) genes are occasionally associated with a single ABC transporter, but the significance of this multiplicity remains unclear. Here, we characterize Bl MnBP1 and Bl MnBP2, the two SBPs associated to the β‐manno‐oligosaccharide (MnOS) ABC transporter in Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis . Despite similar overall specificity and preference ...

A study of 11 patients with “double pylorus” revealed that a second channel between the gastric antrum and the duodenal bulb is the result of ulcer penetration. The fistula can be a sign of spontaneous recovery from ulcerative disease; the fistula occurred in conjunction with clinical improvement in the majority of the patients. The advantages of radiological vs. endoscopic diagnostic procedures are discussed.

In the period 1959-1971 a simple operative closure was the initial management of 112 patients with acute perforation of duodenal ulcers. At follow-up 6-18 years after perforation the relevance of the length of ulcer history prior to perforation in deciding upon ‘definitive’ emergency operation is evaluated. Using such a selection criterion, the rate of misinterpretation at the time of perforation is close on 50%, and half of these patients would be subjected to an apparently unnecessary operation. ...

In a prospective, controlled clinical trial, vagotomies for duodenal, pyloric, and prepyloric ulcers were performed on 259 patients. Eighty-three patients were randomly selected for truncal vagotomy and drainage (TV + D), 93 patients were randomly selected for selective gastric vagotomy and drainage (SV + D) and 83 patients were randomly selected for parietal cell vagotomy without drainage (PCV). This interim report deals with the primary results, reduction in acid secretion, sequelae, and recurrence rates ...

Abstract A prospective, randomized, controlled trial was performed to study truncal vagotomy and drainage (TV), selective vagotomy and drainage (SV) and parietal cell vagotomy (PCV) as elective treatment for duodenal ulcer. Five years postoperatively, 233 patients were available for study: 73 TV, 81 SV and 79 PCV. The ulcer recurrence rates were 13.6, 19.8 and 30.4 per cent respectively. The incidence of severe dumping was 4.9, 10.9 and 1.9 per cent; of severe diarrhoea 4.9, 6.3 and 1.9 per cent; of ...

AbstractThe present study comprises 847 women operated upon for invasive breast carcinoma at 19 surgical departments and enrolled in protocol DBCG-82TM from January 1983 to November 1987. Among them 662 (78%) were allocated for breast-preserving therapy or mastectomy by randomization, while 185 patients (22%) did not accept randomization. Within the randomized group 6% could not be entered into adjuvant protocols, i.e. subsequent programmes of postoperative therapy and follow-up. This left 619 evaluable ...

Until 1985, one of the wastewater treatment plants in Odense, Denmark, was a traditional trickling filter plant designed for approx. 275,000 PE. To meet rigorous standards for N and P removal, the plant was extended in 1986-1988, and the extended plant was put into operation in April, 1989. Now, standards have been changed again and are : N < 8 mg/l and P < 0.5 mg/l. These standards must be complied, with before 1992. The establishing of design criteria based on statistical methods is presented. ...

Escherichia coli strains with inactivated rluD genes were previously found to lack the conserved pseudouridines in helix 69 of 23S ribosomal RNA and to grow slowly. A suppressor mutant was isolated with a near normal growth rate that had changed the conserved Glu-172 codon to a Lys codon in prfB, encoding translation termination factor RF2. When nonsense suppression in strains with all combinations of prfB(+)/prfB(E172K) and rluD(+)/rluD::cat was analyzed, misreading of all three stop codons as ...

Lactitol is a synthetic sugar alcohol used as a sugar replacement in low calorie foods and selectively stimulating growth of L. acidophilus NCFM. The organisation of genes conferring utilisation of raffinose family oligosaccharides (RFOs) has been analysed in several probiotic bacteria from the Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus genera. Glycoside hydrolase family 36 (GH36) α-galatosidase encoding genes occur together with sugar transport systems of the glycoside–pentoside–hexuronide cation symporter family (GPH), sugar phosphotransferase systems (PTSs) or ATP-binding cassette systems (ABCs) highlighting the diversity of RFO uptake. The GH36 genes ...

In the present study we examine the changes in the expression of genes of Lactococcus lactis subspecies cremoris MG1363 during growth in milk. To reveal which specific classes of genes (pathways, operons, regulons, COGs) are important, we performed a transcriptome time series experiment. Global analysis of gene expression over time showed that L. lactis adapted quickly to the environmental changes. Using upstream sequences of genes with correlated gene expression profiles, we uncovered a substantial ...
