Objectives In Greece, there are insufficient data regarding the presence of non-organ and liver-related autoantibodies in hepatitis C patients. This study in a consecutive cohort of 39 such patients from central Greece investigates (1) the prevalence of non-organ and liver-related autoantibodies, and (2) the reactivity of anti-liver–kidney microsomal type 1 antibodies (in the case of positivity with at least one of the methods used) against their molecularly defined antigens. Design All serum samples ...

Abstract PURPOSE: The sodium/iodide symporter (NIS) gene is currently explored in several trials to eradicate experimental cancer with radiodine ((131)I) by its beta-emission. We recently characterized NIS-specific cellular uptake of an alternative halide, radioastatine ((211)At), which emits high-energy alpha-particles. The aim of this study was to investigate in vivo effects of the high linear energy transfer (LET) emitter (211)At on tumor growth and outcome in nude mice. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: We administered ...

This paper develops a rhetorically centered model of community literacy in the theoretical and practical context of local publics—those spaces where ordinary people develop public voices to engage in intercultural inquiry and deliberation. Drawing on fifteen years of action research in the Community Literacy Center and beyond, the authors characterize the distinctive features of local publics, the deliberative, intercultural discourses they circulate, and the literate practices that sustain them. ...

MENX is a recessive multiple endocrine neoplasia-like syndrome in the rat. The tumor spectrum in MENX overlaps those of human multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) types 1 and 2. We mapped the MenX locus to the distal part of rat chromosome 4, excluding the homologs of the genes responsible for the MEN syndromes ( RET and MEN1 ) and syndromes with an endocrine tumor component ( VHL and NF1 ). We report the fine mapping of the disease locus and the identification of a homozygous frameshift mutation in Cdkn1b , ...

Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is the most common soft tissue sarcoma in children (Dagher, R., and Helman, L. (1999) Oncologist 4, 34–44), whereas medulloblastoma, a highly malignant tumor of the cerebellum, accounts for 20% of childhood brain tumors (Goodrich, L. V., and Scott, M. P. (1998) Neuron 21, 1243–1257). Both tumors are associated with a deficiency in the tumor suppressor Patched ( PTCH ) in Gorlin syndrome (Gorlin, R. J. (1987) Medicine ( Baltimore ) 66, 98–113), and they are present in the corresponding murine ...

The majority of Drug Treatment Court (DTC) research has examined the impact of DTCs on criminal recidivism. Comparatively little research has addressed the association between DTC participation and engagement with community-based health and social services. The present study investigated changes in participant involvement with outpatient healthcare and income assistance within a DTC cohort. We hypothesized that involvement with community-based (outpatient) health and social services would increase ...

The recombination properties of the carrier lifetime-limiting center formed during the generation of oxygen-related thermal donors (so called “old” thermal donors) in n-type Czochralski silicon were determined over a wide range of thermal donors' concentrations. The procedure involved (1) determining the various energy levels associated with dopants with the help of temperature Hall effect measurements, (2) clarifying which energy level limits the carrier lifetime by temperature lifetime spectroscopy, ...

Abstract We sought to determine if serum total iron-binding capacity (TIBC) is equivalent to serum transferrin (TRF) so that a low-cost colorimetric chemical assay for unsaturated iron-binding capacity (UIBC) could be substituted for a high-cost immunologic assay for TRF. Our study design included independent and blinded measurements of UIBC, serum iron, and TRF concentrations in human serum samples. Data from five independent correlation studies carried out at three different Quest Diagnostics laboratories ...

Buprenorphine maintenance for opioid dependence remains of limited availability among underserved populations, despite increases in US opioid misuse and overdose deaths. Low threshold primary care treatment models including the use of unobserved, "home," buprenorphine induction may simplify initiation of care and improve access. Unobserved induction and long-term treatment outcomes have not been reported recently among large, naturalistic cohorts treated in low threshold safety net primary care settings. ...

In this work, Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) absorbers with thicknesses ranging from 2 µm to 370 nm were prepared by a two-step process using electrodeposition of Cu-In-Ga followed by annealing under a pure Se atmosphere. Based on compositional characterizations, it is shown that in order to decrease the thickness of the precursors, it is not enough to reduce only the deposition time of Cu-In-Ga layers without working on the composition and deposition parameters of the thin films. After the optimization of ...

Hemoglobin is the protein in red blood cells that carries and distributes oxygen to the body. Methemoglobinemia is a blood disorder in which an abnormal amount of methemoglobin (MetHb), a form of hemoglobin (Hb), is produced from either inadequate MetHb reductase activity or too much MetHb production or by exposure to oxidizing agents. This could lead to anoxia and death if it is not treated. However, this parameter has not been investigated as a valid post-mortem indicator because random MetHb levels ...

Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) instruments are sometimes used without explicit understanding of which HRQOL domains are important to a given population. In this study, we sought to elicit an importance hierarchy among 27 HRQOL domains (derived from the general population) via a best-worst scaling survey of the population in Singapore, and to determine whether these domains were consistently valued across gender, age, ethnicity, and presence of chronic illnesses. We conducted a community-based ...

Objectives With aging of the HIV ‐positive population, cardiovascular disease ( CVD ) increasingly contributes to morbidity and mortality. We investigated CVD ‐related and other causes of death ( COD s) and factors associated with CVD in a multi‐country Asian HIV ‐positive cohort. Methods Patient data from 2003–2017 were obtained from the Therapeutics, Research, Education and AIDS Training in Asia (TREAT Asia) HIV Observational Database ( TAHOD ).
