Solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN) composed of trimyristin (solid lipid) and poloxamer 407 (surfactant) were prepared by a w/o/w emulsion technique for the incorporation of Salmon calcitonin, and further explored as protein carriers for oral delivery. Trimyristin SLN showed a mean size diameter of 200 nm with an association efficiency for calcitonin of approx. 86%. The morphology of SLN was investigated by cryo-SEM and by AFM, revealing spheroid shape SLN with a smooth surface. The in vitro release of ...

Purinergic signaling plays distinct and important roles in the CNS, including the transmission of calcium signals between astrocytes. Gap junction hemichannels are among the mechanisms proposed by which astrocytes might release ATP; however, whether the gap junction protein connexin43 (Cx43) forms these “hemichannels” remains controversial. Recently, a new group of proteins, the pannexins, have been shown to form nonselective, high-conductance plasmalemmal channels permeable to ATP, thereby offering ...

The aim of this study was to develop nanostructured lipid carriers (NLC) for topical delivery of fluticasone propionate (FP) with the aim to further improve the safety profile and decrease the adverse-side effects commonly reported in topical corticotherapy. NLC are colloidal drug-carriers consisting of a blend of a solid lipid and a small amount of liquid lipid since these carriers have proved to be effective in epidermal targeting in particular of glucocorticoids. NLC consisting of glyceryl palmito- ...

This paper compares the rhetorical organization of research article introductions in Brazilian Portuguese and in English within a subfield of Applied Linguistics. Using Swales’ (1990) CARS model as an analytical tool, this exploratory study investigated 20 research articles. The findings indicate that introductions in Brazilian Portuguese tend to follow a different pattern from that of the model, whereas the introductions in English follow it closely. Different explanations are offered to account ...

The eyes are among the most readily accessible organs in terms of location in the body, yet drug delivery to eye tissues is particularly problematic. Poor bioavailability of drugs from ocular dosage forms is mainly due to precorneal loss factors (e.g., tear dynamics, nonproductive absorption, transient residence time in the cul-de-sac, and relative impermeability of the corneal epithelial membrane). There is a clear need for effective topical formulations capable of promoting drug penetration and ...

The methodology to recognize loan losses set forth by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) is referred to as the incurred loss model and defined as the identification of inherent losses in a loan or portfolio of loans. Inherent credit losses, under current accounting standards in countries following FASB and IASB, are event driven and should only be recognized upon an event's occurrence.1 This has ...

This paper provides a methodology for valuing credit default swaps (CDS). In these financial instruments a sequence of payments is promised in return for protection against the credit losses in the event of default. Given the widespread use of credit default swaps, one major concern is whether the credit risk has been priced accurately. Credit risk assessment of counterparty is an area of renewed interest due to the present financial crises. This article proposes a non parametric model for estimating ...

In this paper we study the link between television and divorce in Brazil. We exploit variation in the timing of availability of the signal of Rede Globo—the network that had a virtual monopoly on telenovelas in the country—across municipal areas. Using three rounds of census data (1970, 1980, and 1991) and controlling for area fixed effects and for time-varying characteristics, we find that the share of women who are separated or divorced increases significantly after the Globo signal becomes available. ...

The interactions between three different protein antigens and dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DODAB) dispersed in aqueous solutions from probe sonication or adsorbed as one bilayer onto particles was comparatively investigated. The three model proteins were bovine serum albumin (BSA), purified 18 kDa/14 kDa antigens from Taenia crassiceps (18/14-Tcra) and a recombinant, heat-shock protein hsp-18 kDa from Mycobacterium leprae. Protein-DODAB complexes in water solution were characterized by dynamic ...

It is well known that persistent inflammatory conditions can induce the cancer formation. In fact, cytokines and chemokines play a crucial role in the promoting of angiogenesis, metastasis, and subversion of adaptive immunity. These proteins are involved in cancer-related inflammation and can represent a target for innovative diagnostic and therapeutic strategies useful to clinical studies.

After storage at 4, 25 and 40 °C, the particles remained in the nanosize range for 12 months, with zeta potential higher than |40 mV|. Similar results were found in xanthan gum-based hydrogels containing NE or NLC. The crystallinity ...

Xylella fastidiosa is a xylem-restricted plant pathogen that causes a range of diseases in several and important crops. Through comparative genomic sequence analysis many genes were identified and, among them, several potentially involved in plant–pathogen interaction. The experimental determination of the primary sequence of some markedly expressed proteins for X. fastidiosa and the comparison with the nucleic acids sequence of genome identified one of them as being SCJ21.16 (XFa0032) gene product. ...

Phylogeography: applications in taxonomy and conservation. Phylogeography is defined as the discipline that studies the principles and processes that determine the geographical distribution of genealogical lineages. Two of the study areas where phylogeographic approaches are used more and more frequently are taxonomy and conservation. In this review we first present a general description of phylogeography and then discuss how research in taxonomy and conservation has been addressed when using phylogeographic ...

The order Passeriformes comprises the largest number of families and species of birds of any avian order. Brazil is rich in passerine birds, which are a common victim of wildlife trafficking in Brazil. Annually, many birds die as a consequence of illegal trade. To investigate the occurrence of the principle diseases and to identify the main causes of death in smuggled passerine birds, the cause of death was evaluated in 360 passerine birds confiscated within the city of São Paulo, Brazil. Wistar rats were used. At 15 d, half of the pups were separated from dams and fed with hydrated powered chow. On day 17, suckling and early weanling rats were subjected to fasting (17 h). The development of the gastric mucosa is controlled by hormones, growth factors and feeding behavior. Early weaning (EW), which means the abrupt interruption of suckling, increases proliferation and differentiation in the rat gastric epithelium. Transforming growth factor α (TGFα) is secreted in the stomach, binds to the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and may control cell proliferation, differentiation and migration. Here, we investigated the influence of suckling–weaning transition on the ...
