Background: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is only effective in preventing new HIV infections when taken consistently. In clinical practice, asking a patient about their adherence (self-report) is the predominant method of assessing adherence to PrEP. Although inexpensive and noninvasive, self-report is subject to social desirability and recall biases. Several clinical trials demonstrate a discrepancy between self-reported adherence and biomarker-based recent adherence. Less is known about the accuracy ...

The global burden of pancreatic cancer has steadily increased, while the prognosis after pancreatic cancer diagnosis remains poor. This study aims to compare the stage- and age-specific pancreatic cancer net survival (NS) for seven high-income countries: Australia, Canada, Denmark, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, and United Kingdom. The study included over 35,000 pancreatic cancer cases diagnosed during 2012–2014, followed through 31 December 2015. The stage- and age-specific NS were calculated using ...

Among songbirds, does reduced fidelity to a breeding site lead to vocal improvisation? Data for Cistothorus wrens suggest it does, because North American Sedge Wrens (C. platensis) have low breeding-site fidelity and improvise their large song repertoires, but sedentary or site-faithful populations of this and other Cistothorus species in the Neotropics and North America all imitate. We attempted to falsify this hypothesis by studying extreme south-temperate zone populations of Sedge Wrens in the ...

Although nanosilver consumer products (CPs) enjoy widespread availability, the environmental fate, leaching, and bioaccumulation behaviors of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) from these products are not well understood. In this work, three nanosilver CPs, two AgNP standards, and an ionic silver (Ag+) standard were studied in estuarine mesocosms. The CPs exhibited long-term release of significant amounts of silver over a 60 d residence time in the mesocosms, and ultimately released 82 - 99% of their total ...

Elijah Wilson, Meisam Shir Mohammadi, John A. Nairn,

Abstract In materials with process zones, such as fiber-bridging zones in wood, it is crucial to characterize fracture toughness as a function of crack growth, known as the material's R curve. Here, a new fracture testing protocol developed to measure continuous R curves was used on six different species of solid wood—Douglas fir, Ponderosa pine, cedar, hemlock, balsa, and oak. Importantly, the new method uses monotonic loading, because unloading phases, as used in prior R curve methods, might damage ...

RNA aptamers selected to bind fluorophores and activate their fluorescence offer a simple and modular way to visualize native RNAs in cells. Split aptamers which are inactive until the halves are brought within close proximity can become useful for visualizing the dynamic actions of RNA assemblies and their interactions in real time with low background noise and eliminated necessity for covalently attached dyes. Here, we design and test several sets of F30 Broccoli aptamer splits, that we call fluorets, ...
