Children in many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are at high risk for exposure to violence and later violent behaviour. The World Health Organization has declared an urgent need for the evaluation and implementation of low-cost parenting interventions in LMICs to prevent violence. Two areas of significant early risk are harsh parenting and poor child cognitive and socio-emotional development. Parenting interventions suitable for LMIC contexts have been developed targeting these risk factors ...

Visceral leishmaniasis is a disease caused by Leishmania (Leishmania) chagasi and represents a serious public health problem. The dog is the main urban reservoir of the disease; however, investigations regarding the occurrence and epidemiological importance of leishmaniasis in cats have recently been initiated. This study aimed to detect cats seropositive for Leishmania spp. using different antigens. Additional studies were performed using sera from cats with Toxoplasma gondii (n = 15) to evaluate cross- ...

Studying effects of milk components on bone may have a clinical impact as milk is highly associated with bone maintenance, and clinical studies provided controversial associations with dairy consumption. We aimed to evaluate the impact of milk extracellular vesicles (mEVs) on the dynamics of bone loss in mice. MEVs are nanoparticles containing proteins, mRNA and microRNA, and were supplemented into the drinking water of mice, either receiving diet-induced obesity or ovariectomy (OVX). Mice receiving ...

Diagnosing canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL) is difficult because clinical signs of the disease are non-specific and a many infected animals in endemic areas, as in Brazil, are asymptomatic. Serological tests are the most common diagnostic methods employed, but most have limitations. For this reason, the implementation of a rapid, sensitive, and specific diagnostic test for CVL has become increasingly important. In this study, we adapted a chemiluminescent enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (CL ELISA), ...

The development of new antiepileptic drugs is a high-risk/high-cost research field, which is made even riskier if the behavioral epileptic seizure profile is the unique approach on which the development is based. In order to increase the effectiveness of the screening conducted in the zebrafish model of status epilepticus (SE), the evaluation of neurochemical markers of SE would be of great relevance. Epilepsy is associated with changes in the glutamatergic system, and glutamate uptake is one of ...

People recovered from COVID-19 may still present complications including respiratory and neurological sequelae. In other viral infections, cognitive impairment occurs due to brain damage or dysfunction caused by vascular lesions and inflammatory processes. Persistent cognitive impairment compromises daily activities and psychosocial adaptation. Knowledge on biodiversity is fundamental for conservation strategies. The Brazilian Pampa region, located in subtropical southern Brazil, is neglected in terms of conservation, and knowledge of its biodiversity is fragmented. We aim to answer the question: how many, and which, species occur in the Brazilian Pampa? In a collaborative effort, we built species lists for plants, animals, bacteria, and fungi that occur in the Brazilian Pampa. We included information on distribution patterns, main habitat ...

No entanto, as abordagens epigenéticas emergem como promissoras, ...

Around the world each year 10% to 15% of direct maternal deaths are associated with hypertensive disorders in pregnancy. Not only it can be devastating and life threatening for the mothers but also for the babies. Risks for the baby include poor growth and prematurity [1]. In low and middle income countries many public hospitals have limited access to neonatal intensive care, and so the mortality and morbidity is likely to be considerably higher than in settings where such facilities are available. ...

This study aimed to evaluate immune mediators in INS by measuring plasma and urinary levels of transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1), monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1/CCL2), regulated on activation normal T-cell expressed and secreted (RANTES/CCL5) and IL-8 (IL-8/CXCL8) in pediatric patients with INS and in age-matched healthy controls. BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The serine and cysteine peptidase inhibitor, BbCI, isolated from Bauhinia bauhinioides seeds, is similar to the classical plant Kunitz inhibitor, STI, but lacks disulphide bridges and methionine residues. BbCI blocks activity of the serine peptidases, elastase (K iapp 5.3 nM) and cathepsin G (K iapp 160.0 nM), and the cysteine peptidase cathepsin L (K iapp 0.2 nM). These three peptidases play important roles in the inflammatory process. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH We measured the effects ...

S100B is a calcium-binding protein expressed and secreted by astrocytes; serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) S100B elevation has been proposed as an index of brain damage. However, other tissues are shown to produce this protein and the clinical significance of serum S100B elevation has been discussed. We investigated the levels of serum and CSF S100B in fasting Wistar rats. Animals were divided into two groups, control and fasting for 48 h, and S100B levels in serum and CSF were determined by ELISA. ...

The merozoite surface protein-2 (MSP-2) of Plasmodium falciparum comprises repeats flanked by dimorphic domains defining the allelic families FC27 and IC1. Here, we examined sequence diversity at the msp-2 locus in Brazil and its impact on MSP-2 antibody recognition by local patients. Only 25 unique partial sequences of msp-2 were found in 61 isolates examined. The finding of identical msp-2 sequences in unrelated parasites, collected 6–13 years apart, suggests that no major directional selection ...
