Ecological and laboratory studies have demonstrated that temperature modulates West Nile virus (WNV) transmission dynamics and spillover infection to humans. Here we explore whether inclusion of temperature forcing in a model depicting WNV transmission improves WNV forecast accuracy relative to a baseline model depicting WNV transmission without temperature forcing. Both models are optimized using a data assimilation method and two observed data streams: mosquito infection rates and reported human ...

Abstract The essential oil composition obtained from the leaves of Casearia sylvestris has been investigated by GC and GC/MS. Thirty-seven compounds were identified in the oil. The major constituents of which were β-caryophyllene (27.5%) and bicyclogermacrene (24.2%). The clastogenic and anticlastogenic effect of the oil was tested by chromosome aberration in cells of tissue hepatoma of Rattus novergicus. The three different concentrations of C. sylvestris oil showed clastogenic effects. However, ...

Preclinical data demonstrate that gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) interneurons initiate connectivity in the developing brain. The goal of this study was to compare GABA concentration and its relationship to functional connectivity in the brains of term and preterm infants at term-equivalent age.Infants received both magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans at term-equivalent age. Abstract Esophageal surgery for esophageal cancer has been performed for over a century now. Minimally invasive esophagectomy (MIE) was first described in 1992, and it is now a standard approach in many countries. However, MIE is technically difficult and requires a long learning curve. It takes >100 cases to train for MIE with gastric tube reconstruction with an intrathoracic anastomosis. A possible option to overcome several challenges of MIE might be the use of a robotic system. A robot‐assisted ...

The main objective of our research was to analyze the structure of the Se-containing polysaccharides and to examine how the selenium is bound to the polysaccharide molecule. During investigation of the biosynthesis of new immunomodulators, we isolated a selenium (Se)-containing polysaccharide-protein fraction containing proteoglycans of molecular weights of 3.9 × 106 Da and 2.6 × 105 Da, composed of glucose or mannose, nearly 8% of protein and 190 μg Se/g dry weight. Abstract. In-cloud production of sulfate modifies aerosol size distribution, with important implications for the magnitude of indirect and direct aerosol cooling and the impact of SO2 emissions on the environment. We investigate which sulfate sources dominate the in-cloud addition of sulfate to different particle classes as an air parcel passes through an orographic cloud. Sulfate aerosol, SO2 and H2SO4 were collected upwind, in-cloud and downwind of an orographic cloud for three cloud measurement ...

Prematurely born children are at increased risk for cognitive deficits, but the neurobiological basis of these findings remains poorly understood. Because variations in neural circuitry may influence performance on cognitive tasks, recent investigations have explored the impact of preterm birth on connectivity in the developing brain. Dust in the Clouds Sulfate aerosols have the greatest radiative impact on climate systems. Harris et al. (p. 727 ) report that the oxidation of sulfur dioxide gas, catalyzed by natural transition metal ions mostly on the surface of coarse mineral dust, is the dominant pathway for sulfate production in clouds. In view of the growing sulfur dioxide emissions from large, industrializing countries, including this process in climate models should improve the agreement between models and observations.

Human-induced land use changes are causing extensive habitat fragmentation. As a result, many species are not able to shift their ranges in response to climate change and will likely need to adapt in situ to changing climate conditions. Consequently, a prudent strategy to maintain the ability of populations to adapt is to focus conservation efforts on areas where levels of intraspecific variation are high. By doing so, the potential for an evolutionary response to environmental change is maximized. ...

Abstract M dwarf stars are excellent candidates around which to search for exoplanets, including temperate, Earth-sized planets. To evaluate the photochemistry of the planetary atmosphere, it is essential to characterize the UV spectral energy distribution of the planet’s host star. This wavelength regime is important because molecules in the planetary atmosphere such as oxygen and ozone have highly wavelength-dependent absorption cross sections that peak in the UV (900–3200 Å). We seek to provide ...

Sepsis is a lethal syndrome characterized by systemic inflammation and abnormal coagulation. Despite therapeutic advances, sepsis mortality remains substantially high. Herein, we investigated the role of the plasminogen/plasmin (Plg/Pla) system during sepsis. Plasma levels of Plg were significantly lower in mice subjected to severe compared with nonsevere sepsis, whereas systemic levels of IL-6, a marker of sepsis severity, were higher in severe sepsis. Plg levels correlated negatively with IL-6 ...

Happy engineers are all alike; each unhappy engineer is unhappy in his own way, Tolstoy might have said. Actually, the opposite is closer to the truth. Those who are dissatisfied all tend to spend their days pining for positions that are more challenging or fulfilling. Those who enjoy their work derive satisfaction in many different ways. . The profiles we present in this year's Dream Jobs report aptly demonstrate that proposition. Contentment can come from working with professional athletes, investigating ...
