The effects of d-amphetamine on the recovery of aphasia following stroke was examined in 6 patients. Patients entered the study between 10 and 30 days post onset and were followed for 3 months. The Porch Index of Communicative Ability was used to project a 6 month recovery score. By 3 months post onset, 5 of the 6 patients obtained scores in excess of 100% of the 6 month projections.

A recombinant human von Willebrand factor (vWF) cDNA fragment library was constructed in lambda gt11 for the localization of anti-vWF monoclonal antibody epitopes. Twelve of 21 monoclonal antibodies screened identified epitopes expressed in lambda gt11 as beta-galactosidase fusion proteins. By sequence analysis, these antigenic determinants were localized to segments ranging from 17 to 105 amino acids in length. Four epitopes apparently shared by more than one antibody were identified, suggesting ...

We have previously identified Id- tumor vaiants that emerge after anti-Id mAb therapy of the murine B cell lymphoma 38C13. This report characterizes the molecular basis for these variants. By using a modification of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), mu and kappa Ig loci were sequenced from nine Id- variants derived directly by anti-Id immunoselection in vivo. Ig kappa loci sequence analysis was also performed from 10 additional variants amplified directly from tumor cells in vitro without immunoselection. ...

Octopuses were trained first with a tactile and then a visual discrimination and the two sets of memories were then made to conflict. A negative visual memory (white) blocks the effect of a previously learned positive tactile memory (either rough or smooth) but only in the period immediately after seeing the colour. There is no longer‐term effect on the positive tactile memory. A positive visual memory (black) was not able to reverse a previously learned negative tactile memory (rough). A negative tactile ...

Adjacent bundle sheath and mesophyll cells cooperate for carbon fixation in the leaves of C4 plants. Mutants with compromised plastid development should reveal the degree to which this cooperation is obligatory, because one can assay whether mesophyll cells with defective bundle sheath neighbors retain C4 characteristics or revert to C3 photosynthesis. The leaf permease1-mutable1 (lpe1-m1) mutant of maize exhibits disrupted chloroplast ultrastructure, preferentially affecting bundle sheath choroplasts ...

Objectives: It has been suggested that students are healthier in schools where more students are committed to school. Previous research has examined this only using a proxy measure of value-added education (a measure of whether school-level attendance and attainment are higher than predicted by students’ social profile), finding associations with smoking tobacco, use of alcohol and illicit drugs, and violence. These findings do not provide direct insights into the associations between school-level ...

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND Teachers report higher levels of stress than most occupational groups. Burnout is a specific psychological condition that results from chronic job stress characterized by emotional exhaustion, low personal accomplishment, and depersonalization. This study considers associations between aspects of the school environment and teacher burnout. METHODS Exploratory analysis of baseline data from a cluster randomized controlled trial of 40 schools and 2278 teachers in the United Kingdom. ...

Education policy increasingly promotes action groups as a key strategy for student and/or staff participation in school improvement and whole‐school health promotion. Such groups can coordinate multi‐component interventions, increase participation and engagement, and enable local adaptations, but few process evaluations have assessed this. Abstract Methylcellulose cultures containing mouse marrow cells at low densities and partially purified preparations of erythropoietin and Interleukin‐3 were scored after 2 weeks for the presence of macroscopic multilineage colonies (from “primary” CFU‐macro GEMM). Whole cultures were then harvested and replated to assess the number of “secondary” CFU‐macro GEMM produced, but not detected, during the primary culture period. In such experiments adherent marrow cells yielded significantly higher numbers ...
