Huntington disease is caused by the expansion of a polyglutamine repeat in the Huntingtin protein (Htt) that leads to degeneration of neurons in the central nervous system and the appearance of visible aggregates within neurons. We have developed and tested suppressor polypeptides that bind mutant Htt and interfere with the process of aggregation in cell culture. In a Drosophila model, the most potent suppressor inhibits both adult lethality and photoreceptor neuron degeneration. The appearance of ...

The use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for both severe respiratory and cardiac failure is increasing. Because these patients are some of the sickest in the intensive care unit, a multidisciplinary approach to their treatment, including appropriate nutrition therapy, is warranted. Currently, limited data exist on the optimal timing, type, and amount of nutrition to be provided. This review focuses on describing the current nutrition practices in patients receiving ECMO, details research ...

Initiation or continuation of artificial hydration (AH) at the end of life requires unique considerations. A combination of ethical precedents and medical literature may provide clinical guidance on how to use AH at the end of life. The purpose of this review is to describe the ethical framework for and review current literature relating to the indications, benefits, and risks of AH at the end of life. Skepticism towards AI-powered education products is widespread among educators. One reason for this skepticism is a perceived gap between what educators consider effective teaching and what AIED systems offer. This paper tries to address the issue by arguing for an architectural design that is oriented towards education theories and empirical findings instead of solely towards AI affordances, the benefits of which include more robust AIED systems and higher educator acceptance because of the increased ...

Abstract Water temperature appears to play a key role in determining population persistence of westslope cutthroat trout Oncorhynchus clarkii lewisi , but specific thermal performance and survival criteria have not been defined. We used the acclimated chronic exposure laboratory method to determine upper thermal tolerances and growth optima of westslope cutthroat trout and rainbow trout O. mykiss , a potential nonnative competitor that occupies much of the former range of westslope cutthroat trout. ...

Abstract Harmful algae can cause death in fish, shellfish, marine mammals, and humans, via their toxins or from effects associated with their sheer quantity. There are many species, which cause a variety of problems around north-west Europe, and the frequency and distribution of algal blooms have altered in the recent past. Species distribution modelling was used to understand how harmful algal species may respond in the future to climate change, by considering environmental preferences and how ...

ABSTRACT Remaining populations of westslope cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii iewisi) in western North America are primarily confined to cold headwaters whereas nonnative rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) predominate in warmer, lower elevation stream sections historically occupied by westslope cutthroat trout. We tested whether differing thermal preferences could account for the spatial segregation observed in the field. Thermal preferences of age-1 westslope cutthroat trout and rainbow trout ( ...
