Background Tailored intervention strategies are frequently recommended among approaches to the implementation of improvement in health professional performance. Background Central venous catheters (CVCs) facilitate venous access, allowing the intravenous administration of complex drug treatments, blood products and nutritional support, without the trauma associated with repeated venepuncture. However, CVCs are associated with a risk of infection. Some studies have indicated that the type of dressing used with them may affect the risk of infection. Hyperthermia has significant potential as an adjuvant form of brain tumor therapy. Current intracranial hyperthermia methods, however, are limited in their ability to control spatiotemporal thermal distribution. A stereotaxic magnetic movement system that may be capable of heating discrete regions of brain to a preselected temperature is described. With this system, a ferromagnetic object (referred to as a thermoceptor) is directed through the brain by an external drive magnet. Real time thermoceptor ...

Abstract Background Pain from osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the top causes of disability worldwide, but effective treatment is lacking. Nociceptive factors are released by activated synovial macrophages in OA, but depletion of synovial macrophages paradoxically worsens inflammation and tissue damage in previous studies. Rather than depleting macrophages, we hypothesized that inhibiting macrophage activation may improve pain without increasing tissue damage. We aimed to identify key mechanisms mediating ...

Haoxiang Zeng, Xiaoli Liang, Derrick A. Roberts, Elizabeth Gillies, Markus Muellner,

Abstract Polymer nanodiscs, especially with stimuli‐responsive features, represent an unexplored frontier in the nanomaterial landscape. Such 2D nanomaterials are considered highly promising for advanced biomedicine applications. Herein, we designed a rod‐coil copolymer architecture based on an amphiphilic, tadpole‐like bottlebrush copolymer, which can directly self‐assemble into core–shell nanodiscs in an aqueous environment. As the bottlebrush side chains are made of amorphous, UV‐responsive poly( ...

There has been growing interest in polymeric systems that break down or undergo property changes in response to stimuli. Such polymers can play important roles in biological systems, where they can be used to control the release of therapeutics, modulate imaging signals, actuate movement, or direct the growth of cells. In this Perspective, after discussing the most important stimuli relevant to biological applications, we will present a selection of recent exciting developments. The growing importance ...
