Neurocognition and psychopathology are robust predictors of community functioning and relapse/rehospitalization in schizophrenia . Existing studies are however limited because they have ignored the most chronic, treatment-resistant patients. Moreover, the prediction of functional outcomes has yet to be extended to the duration of community tenure, an indicator of the capacity of chronically-hospitalized patients to gain traction in the community. The current study examined neurocognition and symptom ...

Adam Savitz, Tara Ann Kahn, Kelly Elizabeth McGovern, Jeffrey P. Kahn,
Panic is commonly co-morbid with schizophrenia. Panic may emerge prodromally, contribute to specific psychotic symptoms, and predict medication response. Panic is often missed due to agitation, impaired cognition, psychotic symptom overlap and limited clinician awareness. Carbon dioxide exposure has been used reliably to induce panic in non-psychotic panic subjects, but has not been systematically studied in schizophrenia. Eight inpatients with schizophrenia, recent auditory hallucinations, none ...

Recruitment and retention of research participants are challenging and critical components of successful clinical trials and natural history studies. Infants with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) have been a particularly challenging population to study due to their fragile and complex medical issues, poor prognosis and, until 2016, a lack of effective therapies. Recruitment of healthy infants into clinical trials and natural history studies is also challenging and sometimes assumed to not be feasible. ...

To determine those factors predictive of the ability to both initiate and suppress ventricular tachyarrhythmias during electrophysiologic study, the results of programmed cardiac stimulation were evaluated in 261 patients: 66 presenting with nonsustained ventricular tachycardia, 91 with sustained ventricular tachycardia and 104 with ventricular fibrillation. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that the presenting arrhythmia was a potent and independent predictor of the ability to ...

ABSTRACT Electron microscopy of haplosporidan spores from Teredo navalis and T. furcifera revealed 4 distinct membrane‐bound extensions, 1 apical extension opposite the opercular hinge, 1 terminal and 2 opposing lateral extensions. These extensions were not continuous with the spore wall, but contained microtubule‐like structures and degrading epispore cytoplasm. No other known species in the family Haplosporidiidae is characterized by spores possessing four epispore extensions. There are currently ...
