Inflammation is a key component of many clinical conditions that affect the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and Moringa oleifera Lam. has been used to treat inflammatory diseases. Here, we evaluated the toxicological effects on mice of a naturally-occurring isothiocyanate from M. oleifera and its seven analogue molecules. Further, the anti-nociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects on a rat model of TMJ inflammatory hypernociception were assessed. The systemic toxicological profile was determined in ...

Abelmoschus esculentus is largely cultivated in Northeastern Brazil for medicinal purposes, e.g. inflammatory conditions. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of Abelmoschus esculentus lectin (AEL) in reducing formalin-induced temporomandibular joint inflammatory hypernociception in rats. The behavioral experiments were performed in male Wistar rats (180-240 g). Rats were pre-treated (i.v.) with AEL (0.001, 0.01 or 0.1 mg/kg) 30 min before formalin injection (i.art.). Temporomandibular disorders are the second most common cause of orofacial pain mediated by inflammatory compounds, which in many cases leads to chronic orofacial pain. This study assessed the antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects of a lectin from the green seaweed Caulerpa cupressoides (CcL) on hypernociception inflammatory in TMJ of rats and investigated the involvement of different mechanisms. Rats received i.v. CcL 30 min prior to injection of flogistic agentes or 0.9% saline into the ...

Temporomandibular disorder is a clinical painful condition in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) region. The purified sulfated polysaccharide from the green marine algae Caulerpa racemosa (Cr) has provided anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive activity. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an anticancer modality depicting an induced oxidative stress as the mechanism of action that ultimately culminates in cell death. The apurinic/apyrimidinic endonuclease 1/redox factor-1 (APE1/Ref-1) is a key protein promoting bad prognostic in several cancer types. APE1/Ref-1 is able to regulate cell response to oxidative stress by two basic protein activities, including a reduction-oxidation-function and a DNA repair-function. Therefore, the efficacy of anticancer therapies ...

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a complex multifactorial disease that emerges from the combination of genetic and environmental factors, and obesity, lifestyle, and aging are the most relevant risk factors. Hyperglycemia is the main metabolic feature of T2D as a consequence of insulin resistance and β-cell dysfunction. Among the cellular alterations induced by hyperglycemia, the overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and consequently oxidative stress, accompanied by a reduced antioxidant response ...

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a slowly progressive neurodegenerative disease conceptualized as a continuous process, ranging from mild cognitive impairment (MCI), to the mild, moderate, and severe clinical stages of AD dementia. AD is considered a complex multifactorial disease. Currently, the use of cholinesterase inhibitors (ChEI), such as tacrine, donepezil, rivastigmine, and galantamine, has been the main treatment for AD patients. Interestingly, there is evidence that ChEI also promotes neuroprotective ...

Summary Wood properties influence the leaf life span ( LL ) of tree crowns. As lignin is an important component of wood and the water transport system, we investigated its relationship with embolism resistance and the LL of several tree species in a seasonally dry tropical ecosystem. We determined total lignin and the monomer contents of guaiacyl (G) and syringyl (S) and related them to wood traits and xylem vulnerability to embolism (Ψ 50 ) for the most common species of the Brazilian semiarid, locally ...

Photonic systems for high-performance information processing have attracted renewed interest. Neuromorphic silicon photonics has the potential to integrate processing functions that vastly exceed the capabilities of electronics. Microring weight banks could enable novel signal processing approaches in silicon photonics. We analyze factors limiting channel count in microring weight banks, which are central to analog wavelength-division multiplexed processing networks in silicon. We find that microring weight banks require a fundamentally different analysis compared to other wavelength-division multiplexing circuits (e.g., demultiplexers). By introducing a quantitative description of independent weighting, we establish performance ...
