Abstract Gentamicin (G) is a highly nephrotoxic aminoglucoside. It was used to experimentally induce nephrotoxicity in male Wistar rats. To find a drug capable of protecting the nephron we assayed a cardioprotector (trimetazidine, TMZ) and a hepatoprotector ( N ‐acetyl cysteine, NAC). The rats were divided into six groups ( n = 8): (A) control without drugs; (B) treated with 50 mg kg −1 per day (i.p.) of G for 7 days; (C) diet supplemented with 20 mg kg −1 per day of TMZ for 7 days; (D) treated with 10 mg kg −1 ...

The sequence of the ftsI gene encoding the transpeptidase domain of penicillin-binding protein 3 (PBP 3) was determined for 354 nonconsecutive Haemophilus influenzae isolates from Spain; 17.8% of them were ampicillin susceptible, 56% were beta-lactamase nonproducing ampicillin resistant (BLNAR), 15.8% were beta-lactamase producers and ampicillin resistant, and 10.4% displayed both resistance mechanisms. The ftsI gene sequences had 28 different mutation patterns and amino acid substitutions at 23 positions. ...

Abstract The aim of this work was to develop and evaluate a 99m Tc‐labeled neuropeptide Y derivative with affinity toward Y1‐receptor. The selected amino acid sequence included nine amino acids derived from the C‐terminal portion of the NPY complemented with the addition of one cysteine‐mercaptoacetic acid moiety to bind the radiometal. Labeling was achieved through the preparation of a 3 + 1 nitrido complex. Physicochemical evaluation, cell uptake, internalization and externalization studies, and ...

The scientific community has made considerable efforts to improve the production of protein from traditional sources. Currently it has also been focused on non-conventional protein sources, such as those produced in conservation and sustainable use programs, which would contribute to the improvement of local and national economies. Abstract Cyclosporin A (CyA), a potent immunosuppressant, was used to determine the hepatotoxic effect in long‐term treatments. Male Wistar rats were used in these experiments. They were given CyA chronically at doses used in patients for 120 days, and at doses of 5, 10, 15 and 20 mg kg −1 day −1 . These doses amount to CyA values in blood of 200 ± 24, 314 ± 40, 445 ± 33 and 598 ± 53 ng ml −1 , respectively. A significant increase in glutamate dehydrogenase (GLDH) was found in the groups treated with 15 and 20 mg ...

Abstract Atlantic multidecadal variability (AMV) has been linked to the observed slowdown of global warming over 1998–2012 through its impact on the tropical Pacific. Given the global importance of tropical Pacific variability, better understanding this Atlantic–Pacific teleconnection is key for improving climate predictions, but the robustness and strength of this link are uncertain. Analyzing a multi-model set of sensitivity experiments, we find that models differ by a factor of 10 in simulating ...

Biallelic mutations in human XRCC1 are associated with ocular motor apraxia, axonal neuropathy, and progressive cerebellar ataxia. This paper shows that mutated forms of human XRCC1, a scaffold protein involved in DNA single-strand break repair, are associated with ocular motor apraxia, axonal neuropathy, and progressive cerebellar ataxia. In cells from a patient with an XRCC1−/− mutation, rates of break repair are reduced and the single-strand break sensor protein PARP1 is hyperactivated, resulting ...

Haemophilus influenzae is a gram-negative bacterium of relevant clinical interest. H. influenzae Rd KW20 was the first organism to be sequenced and for which a genome-scale metabolic model (GEM) was developed.
