Available lysine content is an indicator of protein quality and nutritional value of milk. Many studies have examined the effects of extraction, treatment and storage of human milk upon its components, though no references are found regarding the possible changes in milk quality as defined by its content in essential amino acids such as lysine. The present study investigates the available lysine content in human milk and the variations in lysine resulting from milk manipulation as follows: (a) Cold ...

Abstract Concerned about reports of a 15% decline in HIV testing among high-risk youth in an earlier study in Pittsburgh, this study was initiated to explore reasons why young people are not getting tested for HIV, while gathering data on their respective level of risk taking behaviors. A total of 580 surveys were collected from youth aged between 14 and 24. Overall, 17% of youth were found to be at high to some risk for HIV infection, while many of them agreed they were not at-risk for HIV. Young ...

BackgroundTo overcome the three delays in triage, transport and treatment that underlie adverse pregnancy outcomes, we aimed to reduce all-cause adverse outcomes with community-level interventions targeting women with pregnancy hypertension in three low-income countries.MethodsIn this individual participant-level meta-analysis, we de-identified and pooled data from the Community-Level Interventions for Pre-eclampsia (CLIP) cluster randomised controlled trials in Mozambique, Pakistan, and India, which ...

The decarbonization of both power and mobility sectors are two main goals established during international environmental summits. Distributed battery storage, such as electric vehicles batteries and stationary ones, ranging from around a dozen to a few hundred kWh and photovoltaic (PV) systems are disruptive technologies not only because they can individually contribute to CO2 emissions reduction but also due to the positive synergies between them. Batteries can store electricity surplus produced ...

Abstract Background Iron-deficiency anemia is a known risk factor for several adverse perinatal outcomes, but data on its impact on specific maternal morbidities is less robust. Further, information on associations between anemia in early pregnancy and subsequent outcomes are understudied. Methods The study population was derived from the Community Level Interventions for Pre-eclampsia (CLIP) trial in Karnataka State, India (NCT01911494). Included were women who were enrolled in either trial arm, ...

This article discusses the influence of two natural terpene resins (NTR), poly(α-pinene) (PαP A115) and poly(d-limonene) (PL C115), on morphology, miscibility, thermal, and dynamic-mechanical properties of their blends with isotactic polypropylene (iPP). The NTR have interesting physical and chemical properties, and they are approved for food contact application. From the results of differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic-mechanical thermal analysis it was deduced that both the resins were completely ...

The influence of two natural terpene resins on the morphology, phase structure and isothermal crystallization process of iPP was investigated by optical (OM) and electron microscopy (SEM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was found that in dependence on temperature, composition and chemical nature of the resin, one, two or three phases can be present. The isothermal spherulite growth rate and overall crystallization rate of the blends are depressed compared to plain iPP. This depression ...

Abstract The paper discusses the influence of an amorphous oligomer (namely hydrogenated oligocyclopentadiene — HOCP) on the morphology and the phase structure of its blends with several polyolefins as a function of composition and crystallization conditions. In particular the following polyolefins were studied: high-density polyethylene (HDPE), isotactic polypropylene (IPP), poly(l-butene) (PB-1), and poly(4-methyl pentene-1) (P4MP1). The blends under investigation are complex polymer systems. In fact, ...

PB-1 and HOCP are found to be partially miscible in the melt state. Solidified PB-1/HOCP blends contain three phases: (1) a crystalline phase formed by PB-1 crystals; (2) an amorphous PB-1-rich phase; and (3) an amorphous HOCP-rich phase. The optical micrographs of the solidified blends show a morphology constituted ...

Abstract By using optical microscopy, small‐angle X‐ray scattering and differential scanning calorimetry, the melting behaviour and the structural parameters of poly(ethylene oxide)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PEO/PMMA) blends are determined. The equation that relates the observed melting temperature, T m ′, to the lamellar thickness is used for the determination of the equilibrium melting temperature, T m . In the case of blends a small depression in the equilibrium melting point is observed. The depression ...

The dependence of miscibility on blend composition and temperature for syndiotactic polystyrene/poly(vinyl methyl ether) (SPS/PVME) blends, was investigated by solid state n.m.r. spectroscopy and d.s.c. and compared with that of the blend containing atactic polystyrene (APS). The temperature dependence of 13C cross polarization/magic angle spinning intensities for the resonance of SPS/PVME blends indicates that these blends are phase separated, whereas for the APS/PVME blends, there is evidence of ...

Abstract The influence of hydrogenated olio(cyclopentadiene) (HOCP) on tensile mechanical properties of its blends with high density polyethylene (HDPE) has been studied at 20, 80, and 100°C. The nominal stress‐strain curves performed at 20°C indicate an increase of the modulus and a conspicuous decrease of the ultimate properties increasing the HOCP content in the blend. Blends with HOCP content > 20%‐wt are found to be very fragile at 20°C. These behaviors have been related to the presence of the ...

Abstract Despite the relevance of chemical communication in vertebrates, comparative examinations of macroevolutionary trends in chemical signaling systems are scarce. Many turtle and tortoise species are reliant on chemical signals to communicate in aquatic and terrestrial macrohabitats, and many of these species possess specialized integumentary organs, termed mental glands (MGs), involved in the production of chemosignals. We inferred the evolutionary history of MGs and tested the impact of macrohabitat ...

WHIM syndrome is an inherited immune disorder caused by an autosomal dominant heterozygous mutation in CXCR4. The disease is characterized by neutropenia/leukopenia (secondary to retention of mature neutrophils in bone marrow), recurrent bacterial infections, treatment-refractory warts, and hypogammaglobulinemia. All mutations reported in WHIM patients lead to the truncations in the C-terminal domain of CXCR4, R334X being the most frequent. This defect prevents receptor internalization and enhances ...
