Although urine is considered the gold-standard material for the detection of congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection, it can be difficult to obtain in newborns. The aim of this study was to compare the efficiency of detection of congenital CMV infection in saliva and urine samples. One thousand newborns were included in the study. Congenital cytomegalovirus deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) was detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR).Saliva samples were obtained from all the newborns, whereas urine ...

Coastal reef environments support a great diversity of benthic species, which are physically arrayed according to their adaptations to biotic factors such as competition and to abiotic factors such as salinity and desiccation. Few studies have described adaptive strategies on rocky shores in tropical regions. This contribution deals with the spatial distribution of three species of zoanthids (Palythoa caribaeorum, Protopalythoa variabilis and Zoanthus sociatus) on flat sandstone reefs in north-eastern ...

The Culicoides transmit a variety of pathogens. Our aim was to survey the Culicoides species occurring in an Amazonian rural settlement, comparing abundance, richness, and diversity in different environments.Culicoides were captured using CDC light traps. The Shannon-Wiener (H') and Rényi indices were used to compare species diversity and evenness between environments, the equitability (J') index was used to calculate the uniformity of distribution among species, and similarity was estimated using ...

Many studies have evaluated risk factors for human visceral leishmaniasis, but few have focused on the infection among dogs. The objective of this study was to assess the association between peridomestic socioeconomic and environmental factors and the presence of dogs seropositive for Leishmania chagasi in the City of Teresina, Brazil. This case-control study was based on the results of a routine seroepidemiological survey among domestic dogs carried out in 2007. Serological tests were performed ...

Soil water availability has a strong role on vegetation conservation and biodiversity, particularly at vulnerable environments such as archipelagos, subject to significant temporal changes of climate and rainfall, which influence soil weathering and erosion processes. Few field studies on hydrology of volcanic islands in the Atlantic Ocean have been developed focusing on soil and water temporal dynamics and conservation, mainly because such studies require data with high temporal resolution, and ...

Since laccase acts specifically in lignin, the major contributor to biomass recalcitrance, this biocatalyst represents an important alternative to the pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass. Therefore, this study investigates the laccase pretreatment and climate change effects on the hydrolytic performance of Panicum maximum. Through a Trop-T-FACE system, P. maximum grew under current (Control (C)) and future climate conditions: elevated temperature (2 °C more than the ambient canopy temperature) combined ...

Abstract Understanding the dynamics of decomposition and release of nutrients from plant residues of different covers, in association or succession, is essential to define more sustainable management strategies in tropical soils. The objective of this study was to estimate the decomposition rates and the release of nutrients during the decomposition of different crop residues with different chemical compositions when in association (Mix) or in succession as residue management. A study was carried ...

Understanding estuarine diversity patterns is crucial to highlight the ecological value of coastal ecosystems for fish assemblages. To increase our knowledge, we investigated the functional diversity of fish assemblages in five estuarine habitats (sandy beaches, mudflats, seagrass meadows, mangrove fringes, and estuarine riparian vegetation) in a tropical estuary of Brazil. Functional diversity metrics were assessed considering seven fish functional traits and calculated using functional indices, ...

This article presents a synthesis of information about the massive oil spill in Brazil (2019/2020). The event affected 11 states; however, the majority of the oil residue was collected (~ 5380 tons) near nine states (99.8%) in northeastern Brazil. This spill was not the largest in volume (between 5000 m3 and 12,000 m3) recorded in tropical oceans, but it was the most extensive (2890 km). This spill develops an overwashed tar that remains mostly in the undersurface drift (non-floating oil plume) below 17 ...

To elucidate the role of NlpD in Y. pestis pathogenicity, we conducted a whole-genome comparative transcriptome analysis of the wild-type Y. pestis strain and an nlpD mutant under conditions mimicking early stages of infection. The analysis suggested that NlpD is involved in three phenomena: (i) Envelope stability/integrity evidenced by compensatory up-regulation ...

Tropical forests are some of the most biodiverse ecosystems in the world, yet their functioning is threatened by anthropogenic disturbances and climate change. Global actions to conserve tropical forests could be enhanced by having local knowledge on the forests' functional diversity and functional redundancy as proxies for their capacity to respond to global environmental change. Here we create estimates of plant functional diversity and redundancy across the tropics by combining a dataset of 16 ...

Tropical arthropod seasonality has been linked to multiple factors, ranging from microclimate changes to large‐scale environmental processes. The group of social wasps includes eusocial organisms that play essential roles in ecosystems, acting as pollinators and predators.
