Background: The nutritional situation of the fetus and pregnant woman is important for human health, but knowledge of how nutrition affects maternal metabolism and physiology during pregnancy is limited. Such knowledge is important, for example in body composition studies, when information about lean tissue composition is needed. Muscle, a main part of lean tissue, changes its composition in response to age and sex, but the effect of pregnancy on this composition is unknown. ...

Cardiac macrophages are crucial for tissue repair after cardiac injury but are not well characterized. Here we identify four populations of cardiac macrophages. At steady state, resident macrophages were primarily maintained through local proliferation. However, after macrophage depletion or during cardiac inflammation, Ly6chi monocytes contributed to all four macrophage populations, whereas resident macrophages also expanded numerically through proliferation. Genetic fate mapping revealed that ...

Studies have shown the clinical benefits of laparoscopic simulator training. Decreasing numbers of operations by surgical residents have further increased the need for surgical simulator training. However, many surgical simulators in Sweden are often insufficiently used or not used at all. Furthermore, large geographical distances make access to curriculum-based surgical simulator training at established simulator centres difficult. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether tele-mentoring (TM) ...

We present a preliminary analysis of more than 50,000 km of aeromagnetic survey lines flown in the Arctic Ocean, acquired in 2009 with an optically pumped scalar magnetometer as part of the airborne geophysical survey ‘LOMGRAV’. From the observations we removed main and magnetospheric fields as given by the CHAOS-3 field model (Olsen et al., 2010) and remaining external fields as monitored by the Canadian magnetic observatory Alert. The reduced data were levelled based on cross-over differences at ...

The ethical principles of resuscitation have been incorporated into Swedish legislation so that a decision to not attempt cardiopulmonary resuscitation (DNACPR) entails (1) consultation with patient or relatives if consultation with patient was not possible and documentation of their attitudes; (2) consultation with other licensed caregivers; (3) documentation of the grounds for the DNACPR. Our aim was to evaluate adherence to this legislation, explore the grounds for the decision and the attitudes ...

In glaciated areas, the Earth is responding to the ongoing changes of the ice sheets, a response known as glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA). GIA can be investigated through observations of gravity change. For the ongoing assessment of the ice sheets mass balance, where satellite data are used, the study of GIA is important since it acts as an error source. GIA consists of three signals as seen by a gravimeter on the surface of the Earth. These signals are investigated in this study. The ICE-5G ice ...

For the past two decades, airborne gravimetry using a Strapdown Inertial Measurement Unit (SIMU) has been producing gravity estimates comparable to the traditional stable-platform single-axis gravimeters. The challenge has been to control the long term drift of the IMU sensors, propagating into the long-wavelengths of the gravity estimates. This has made the stable-platform approach the preferred method for geodetic applications. In the summer of 2016, during a large airborne survey in Malaysia, ...

In 2018 we celebrated 25 years of development of radar altimetry, and the progress achieved by this methodology in the fields of global and coastal oceanography, hydrology, geodesy and cryospheric sciences. Many symbolic major events have celebrated these developments, e.g., in Venice, Italy, the 15th (2006) and 20th (2012) years of progress and more recently, in 2018, in Ponta Delgada, Portugal, 25 Years of Progress in Radar Altimetry. On this latter occasion it was decided to collect contributions ...

Abstract BACKGROUND The inherent adaptive capacity of GBM to metabolic stress represents a key clinical challenge, and the underlying mechanisms remain ill-defined. Our lab focuses on the emerging role of lipid metabolism in cancer cell stress adaptation. We have previously found increased scavenging of lipid particles, including extracellular vesicles (EVs) and lipoproteins, during acute stress, further resulting in a lipid droplet (LD) storage phenotype. Here, we propose a new mechanistic link between ...

Introduction: It is well known that using inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease increases the risk of pneumonia, but less is known whether ICS treatment in asthma does the same. Aim: To examine risk factors for pneumonia in a population sample with special emphasis on asthma and the use of ICS in asthmatics. Methods: The Respiratory Health in Northern Europe (RHINE) II survey was conducted in 1999 to 2000 and included 6980 subjects from three Swedish centres, who answered a questionnaire ...
