Much of atmospheric and oceanic transport is associated with coherent structures. Lagrangian methods are emerging as optimal tools for their identification and analysis. An important Lagrangian technique which is starting to be widely used in oceanography is that of Finite-Size Lyapunov Exponents (FSLEs). Despite this growing relevance there are still many open questions concerning the reliability of the FSLEs in order to analyse the ocean dynamics. In particular, it is still unclear how robust they ...

Recent work on Lagrangian descriptors has shown that Lyapunov Exponents can be applied to observed or simulated data to characterize the horizontal stirring and transport properties of the oceanic flow. However, a more detailed analysis of regional dependence and seasonal variability was still lacking. In this paper, we analyze the near‐surface velocity field obtained from the Ocean general circulation model For the Earth Simulator (OFES) using Finite‐Size Lyapunov Exponents (FSLE). We have characterized ...

Recent studies, both based on remote sensed data and coupled models, showed a reduction of biological productivity due to vigorous horizontal stirring in upwelling areas. In order to better understand this phenomenon, we consider a system of oceanic flow from the Benguela area coupled with a simple biogeochemical model of Nutrient-Phyto-Zooplankton (NPZ) type. For the flow three different surface velocity fields are considered: one derived from satellite altimetry data, and the other two from a regional ...

A perturbation method for the calculation of transport properties in disordered one-dimensional media is presented. It permits considering cases of strong and weak disorder and different initial conditions in a unified way, giving new results and reproducing known ones. The effective-medium approximation (EMA) appears as the zeroth-order step of our diagrammatic scheme. The method is applied to the random-barrier and random-trap models. The range of validity of the EMA is established. Exact results ...

A method is presented for the study of first-passage-time statistics in one-dimensional disordered media. We introduce a projection-operator formalism that allows the calculation of an averaged backwards master equation. A generalized Dynkin's equation is also presented. We apply this approach to the random-trap model. The exact mean first-passage time to leave a finite domain is calculated for weak disorder. To study strong disorder we introduce a mean-field-like approximation that gives exact ...

Predictions for dye-laser intensity correlation functions of a stochastic model incorporating colored gain-noise fluctuations are discussed and compared with the predictions of the model incorporating loss-noise fluctuations. It is shown that differences between the two models are generally masked by the finite correlation time of the noise. Important differences are shown to exist well above threshold when the correlation time of the colored noise is of the same order or smaller than the cavity ...

We propose to characterize strong disorder and the degree of disorder (in anomalous diffusion problems) by the divergence and the divergence law, respectively, of the mean first passage time to leave an arbitrary interval of finite size. Exact results for the exponents and amplitudes characterizing the divergence are given for certain models.

A direct derivation for the first-passage time statistics of processes driven by white Poisson noise is given. This derivation illustrates the difficulty of boundary conditions for a Markovian process driven by a non-Gaussian white noise. In order to gain information on the first-passage time distribution of non-Markovian processes, we carry out numerical simulations for a free process driven by colored Poisson noise with rectangular and exponential pulses. We study the case of stationary and nonstationary ...

A single-mode dye-laser model incorporating pump white noise through gain-parameter fluctuations is analyzed. It includes a fluctuating saturation term. Intensity fluctuations, a first-order-like transition, and intensity correlation functions are calculated and discussed. It is found that effects previously claimed to be a consequence of the presence of colored noise in the context of loss-noise models can be also explained by white gain noise, except for the existence of two time regimes in the ...

Meso- and submesoscales (fronts, eddies, filaments) in surface ocean flow have a crucial influence on marine ecosystems. Their dynamics partly control the foraging behavior and the displacement of marine top predators (tuna, birds, turtles, and cetaceans). In this work we focus on the role of submesoscale structures in the Mozambique Channel in the distribution of a marine predator, the Great Frigatebird. Using a newly developed dynamic concept, the finite-size Lyapunov exponent (FSLE), we identified ...

The present study constitutes the first attempt to construct a polytene chromosome map of an Anastrepha species, Anastrepha ludens (Loew), a major agricultural pest. The mitotic karyotype has a diploid complement of 12 acrocentric chromosomes, including five pairs of autosomes and an XX/XY sex chromosome pair. The analysis of salivary gland polytene chromosomes has shown a total number of five polytene elements that correspond to the five autosomes. The characteristic features and the most prominent ...

We present properties of Lotka–Volterra equations describing ecological competition among a large number of interacting species. First we extend previous stability conditions to the case of a non-homogeneous niche space, i.e. that of a carrying capacity depending on the species trait. Second, we discuss mechanisms leading to species clustering and obtain an analytical solution for a state with a lumped species distribution for a specific instance of the system. We also discuss how realistic ecological ...

Pristine coastal shallow systems are usually dominated by extensive meadows of seagrass species, which are assumed to take advantage of nutrient supply from sediment. An increasing nutrient input is thought to favour phytoplankton, epiphytic microalgae, as well as opportunistic ephemeral macroalgae that coexist with seagrasses. The primary cause of shifts and succession in the macrophyte community is the increase of nutrient load to water; however, temperature plays also an important role. A competition ...

Abstract. Eastern Boundary Upwelling Systems (EBUS) are characterized by a high productivity of plankton associated with large commercial fisheries, thus playing key biological and socio-economical roles. Since they are populated by several physical oceanic structures such as filaments and eddies, which interact with the biological processes, it is a major challenge to study this sub- and mesoscale activity in connection with the chlorophyll distribution. The aim of this work is to make a comparative ...

We study the Deffuant et al model for continuous-opinion dynamics under the influence of noise. In the original version of this model, individuals meet in random pairwise encounters after which they compromise or not depending on a confidence parameter. Free will is introduced in the form of noisy perturbations: individuals are given the opportunity to change their opinion, with a given probability, to a randomly selected opinion inside the whole opinion space. We derive the master equation of this ...

A central model in theoretical ecology considers the competition of a range of species for a broad spectrum of resources. Recent studies have shown that essentially two different outcomes are possible. Either the species surviving competition are more or less uniformly distributed over the resource spectrum, or their distribution is "lumped" (or "clumped"), consisting of clusters of species with similar resource use that are separated by gaps in resource space. Which of these outcomes will occur crucially ...

We solve numerically both the deterministic stochastic Swift-Hohenberg equation [J. Swift and P. C. Hohenberg, Phys. Rev. A 15, 319 (1977)] in one spatial dimension. In the deterministic case we address the question of pattern selection by studying the temporal evolution away from a uniform, unstable solution. The asymptotic stationary solutions found are periodic in space with a range of wave numbers that is narrow, and consistent with earlier theoretical predictions on the range of allowable periodicities ...

Coal combustion by-products production in USA and EU is estimated in around 115 million tons per year. A large portion of this production is accounted for the coal fly ash (CFA). Cement and concrete manufacturing consumes most of the CFA produced. Zeolite synthesized from CFA is a minor but interesting product, with high environmental applications. Zeolites may be easily obtained from CFA by relatively cheap and fast conversion processes. This paper provides an overview on the methodologies for zeolite ...

We study the regime of anticipated synchronization in unidirectionally coupled chaotic maps such that the slave map has its own output re-injected after a certain delay. For a class of simple maps, we give analytic conditions for the stability of the synchronized solution, and present results of numerical simulations of coupled 1D Bernoulli-like maps and 2D Baker maps, that agree well with the analytic predictions.

We investigate the response of an excitable medium to a localized perturbation in the presence of a two-dimensional smooth chaotic flow. Two distinct types of flows are numerically considered: open and closed. For both of them three distinct regimes are found, depending on the relative strengths of the stirring and the rate of the excitable reaction. In order to clarify and understand the role of the many competing mechanisms present, simplified models of the process are introduced. They are one- ...
