The internal debate hypothesis (Kovacs & Beck, 1977) suggests that those at risk for suicidal thoughts and behaviors may experience fluctuations in both the wish to live (WTL) and wish to die (WTD). Previous research has investigated this hypothesis using various cross-sectional (Goods et al., 2019 [cf. Page & Stritzke, 2020]) and longitudinal methodologies (e.g., Bryan et al., 2016). No investigations have determined the within-day temporal dynamics of WTL and WTD using ecological moment assessment (EMA), ...

Entrustable professional activities (EPAs) have been proposed as a practical framework for the implementation of competency-based education. As veterinary education moves toward a competency-based approach, core EPAs provide a context for assessment of workplace activities. This article reports on the development of eight core clinical EPAs for veterinary education created through multi-institutional collaboration, with international input from veterinary educators and veterinary educational leaders. ...

Hypertension (HT) is associated with environmental noise exposure and is a risk factor for a range of health outcomes. The study aims were to identify key HT related health outcomes and to quantify and monetize the impact on health outcomes attributable to environmental noise-related HT. A reiterative literature review identified key HT related health outcomes and their quantitative links with HT. The health impact of increases in environmental noise above recommended daytime noise levels (55 dB[A]) ...

MRI-derived rates of hippocampal atrophy may serve as surrogate markers of disease progression in mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Manual delineation is the gold standard in hippocampal volumetry; however, this technique is time-consuming and subject to errors. We aimed to compare regional non-linear (fluid) registration measurement of hippocampal atrophy rates against manual delineation in MCI. Hippocampi of 18 subjects were manually outlined twice on MRI scan-pairs (interval ± SD: 2.01 ± 0.11 years), ...

The thermal behavior of a formamide-intercalated mechanochemically activated (dry-ground) kaolinite was investigated by thermogravimetry–mass spectrometry (TG-MS) and diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (DRIFT). After the removal of adsorbed and intercalated formamide, a third type of bonded reagent was identified in the temperature range 230–350 °C decomposing in situ to CO and NH3. The presence of formamide decomposition products, as well as CO2 and various carbonates identified ...

Manual segmentation of the hippocampus is the gold standard in volumetric hippocampal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) analysis; however, this is difficult to achieve reproducibly. This study explores whether application of local registration and calculation of the hippocampal boundary shift integral (HBSI) can reduce random variation compared with manual measures. Hippocampi were outlined on the baseline and registered-repeat MRIs of 32 clinically diagnosed Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients and 47 ...

The dormant population of ovarian primordial follicles is determined at birth and serves as the reservoir for future female fertility. Yet our understanding of the molecular, biochemical, and cellular processes underpinning primordial follicle activation remains limited. The survival of primordial follicles relies on the correct complement and morphology of granulosa cells, which provide signaling factors essential for oocyte and follicular survival. To investigate the contribution of granulosa ...

Suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs) in both the United States (U.S.) and United Kingdom (U.K.) are on the rise. Identification of individual-level protective factors can better inform prevention and intervention efforts. However, the protective role of humor and grit are not yet fully understood. The current study (1) identified the potential protective associations of humor subscale (affiliative, self-enhancing, self-defeating, and aggressive) and grit on STBs among adults, and (2) explored the moderating ...

Psychological theories of suicide posit conceptually similar constructs related to the development of suicidal thinking. These constructs often evince high-magnitude interrelationships across studies. Within these theories, defeat, entrapment and hopelessness standout as conceptually and quantitatively similar. Theoretical improvements may be facilitated through clarifying the subscale and item-level similarities among these constructs. Factor analytic and phenomenological work has demonstrated ...

Kedarlal Sharma, Juhi Singh, Emma E. Frost, Prakash P. Pillai,

MethylCpG binding protein-2 (MeCP2) is an epigenetic regulator and essential for brain development. MeCP2 mutations are associated with a spectrum of neuro-developmental disorders that vary depending on the patient gender, most notably Rett Syndrome. MeCP2 is essential for normal neuronal maturation, and glial cell function in the brain. Besides, its role in neurodevelopmental disorders, MeCP2 is involved in many cancers such as breast, colorectal, lung, liver, and prostate cancer. Glioma is the ...

avMethyl‑CpG binding protein 2 (MeCP2) is an epigenetic regulator, which preferentially binds to methylated CpG dinucleotides in DNA. MeCP2 mutations have been linked to Rett syndrome, a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by severe intellectual disability in females. Earlier studies indicated that loss of MeCP2 function in neuronal cells was the sole cause of Rett syndrome. Subsequent studies have linked MeCP2 expression in CNS glial cells to Rett syndrome pathogenesis. In this review, we ...

Tom Foulsham, Emma E. Frost, Lilly Sage,

When observers view an image, their initial eye movements are not equally distributed but instead are often biased to the left of the picture. This pattern has been linked to pseudoneglect, the spatial bias to the left that is observed in line bisection and a range of other perceptual and attentional tasks. Pseudoneglect is often explained according to the dominance of the right-hemisphere in the neural control of attention, a view bolstered by differences between left- and right-handed participants ...
