Abstract This study is a review of published literature that discusses the utilization of biochar (BC) and plastics as filler and matrix, respectively, in a composite material. These composites, referred to as Biochar-filled plastic composites (BFPCs), play a significant role in the production of environmentally friendly materials. This paper provides an overview of BFPCs, their properties (mechanical, rheological, morphological, electrical, and thermal properties), fabrication techniques, and prospects ...

Despite numerous efforts by government at various levels and other agencies interested in water and its safety, waterborne diseases are still a major public health and environmental concern. The huge investment towards water research, although worth the spending, has not yielded the much expected result as waterborne diseases continue to plague developing countries with Africa and Asia having the worse hit.The unavailability of pipe-borne water and the dependence of rural dwellers on surface waters ...

Abstract Corn or maize (Zea mays L.) is the most significant grain crop worldwide after wheat and rice. It is widely cultivated and consumed as food, feed, and industrial raw material, along with the emission of a large quantity of corn waste. Such abundant, renewable, and cheap wastes with unique chemical compositions can be efficiently converted into adsorbents for the elimination of dye-contaminated water. This article represents an extensive review of the use of corn/maize waste-derived adsorbents ...

Objective: Sickle cell disease is a lifelong illness affecting millions of people globally, but predominantly burdensome in sub-Saharan Africa, where most affected children do not live to adulthood, despite available evidence-based interventions that reduce the disease burden in high-income countries. Method: We reviewed studies evaluating evidence-based interventions that decrease sickle cell disease-related morbidity and mortality among children living in sub-Saharan Africa. We used the Joanna ...

Traditionally, the choice of construction materials depended principally on the strengths of materials, cost of material, availability of materials, simplicity of erection, aesthetics and technical expertise available to the society. This meant that little attention was paid to the environment impacts of materials adopted for civil construction. After centuries of speedy advancement accompanied by deteriorating ecosystem as evidenced by the global climate change and the accompanying gap between the ...

Elevated radioactivity levels of 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K in building materials were measured using gamma-ray spectrometry and their associated lifetime cancer risks were also determined. The mean activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K are 45.72 ± 0.55, 65.90 ± 8.89, and 487.32 ± 15.20 Bq kg−1, respectively. Statistically, the principal component (PC) analysis indicates that higher loadings were recorded in Principal Component One (PC1) with large contribution from 232Th and 40K. The leverage studies ...

This chapter presents the basic approach of microwave bandpass filter design for 5G network applications. The chapter serves as a reference source to microwave stakeholders with little or no filter design experience. It should help them to design and implement their first filter device using microstrip technology. A three-pole Chebyshev bandpass filter with centre frequency of 2.6 GHz, fractional bandwidth of 3%, passband ripple of 0.04321 dB, and return loss of 20 dB has been designed. The designed ...

The potential enhancement of metformin hydrochloride (MH) loaded in lipid vesicles targeting therapeutic efficacy on alloxan-induced diabetic rats was investigated. This involved lipid vesicles formulated with homogenously distributed nano-sized particles by a novel integrated process of multiple emulsification by membrane and solvent evaporation. The average diameter of the water-in-oil (W1/O), W1/O/W2 emulsion droplets, and lipid vesicles was 192 nm, 52 µm, and 173 nm, respectively. The entrapment ...

In contemporary waste management, the escalating volumes of bamboo stalk waste present a pressing environmental challenge, necessitating innovative and sustainable solutions. This research examined the properties of activated carbon monolith (ACM) derived from bamboo stalk (BS) using a facile method. Polystyrene resin and KOH were employed as an eco-binder and activator in the monolith synthesis, respectively. Analytical methods were employed to characterise the mechanical, morphological, elemental, ...

Abstract This study investigates the impact of low-temperature top-lit updraft reactor chamber size on GNSBC yield and properties. For this study, the volumes of carbonization chamber (2,364, 2,013, 1,468, and 970 cm 3 ) in a biomass-fueled TLUD biomass gasifier were varied, and the resulting biochar was analyzed using SEM, EDX, and FTIR. The novelty of this work lies in its investigation of the unexplored impact of carbonization reactor compartment size on groundnut shell biochar properties and yield, ...

The need for low-cost wastewater treatment alternatives especially in poor hinterlands, where synthetic coagulants or activated carbon may not be cheaply and readily available, necessitated this study. Moringa Oleifera (MO) kernel was investigated as coagulant in the purification of wastewater polluted with lead. The adsorption potential of MO was also investigated. MO with effective size of 0.14mm was used in the preparation of stock solutions with dosages of 500mg/l and 1000mg/l. Synthetic wastewater ...

Sustainable accessibility and adequate availability of healthy water are preconditions for healthy living and effective uninterrupted ecological networking. However, the presence of organic pollutants like organochlorine (OC) and organophosphorus (OP) compounds in the environment has led to continuous shrinkage in the percentage of clean water available for humanity's basic needs. Interestingly, green nanoparticles biosynthesized using biogenic entities have recently emerged as an appealing choice ...

Migration has been an inseparable and indispensable part of the history of the Igbo nation. However, the nature, dynamics, and drivers of migration among the Igbo significantly altered since colonial era. Scholars have interrogated aspects of migration and its impact on the Igbo nation. Not many studies; however, have interrogated Igbo migration into Cameroon as well as the Igbo-Cameroon Intergroup relations during the period under review. This paper, therefore, examines the drivers of migration, ...

Biochar production from unconventional biomass, specifically onion peel (OP) and chicken feathers (CF), was investigated in this study. Two distinct biochars were produced by doping each biomass with the other, with the aim of exploring the synergistic effects of different feedstock combinations on biochar properties. The biochar production process was conducted using a retort heating method and characterized using several techniques. A yield of 36 % was obtained for OP-doped biochar (OP92CF8-BC) and ...

Poor productivity of construction craftsmen is one of the causes of cost and time overruns in construction projects. Successful delivery of construction of projects within the measurable tenets is driven by effective site supervision. Nevertheless, the inability of many supervisors to organize, communicate with workers, and direct activities sufficiently is primarily connected to the quality of the construction. Hence, this study examined how enhanced supervision styles can lead to the improvement ...
