Design research is a methodological paradigm, mainly qualitative, that is currently being intensely applied and developed in educational research. In this work we briefly describe this methodology and, within it, we focus our attention on a specific type of studies: teaching experiments. After describing the main characteristics of these studies, we present some conclusions that have been obtained in two teaching experiments developed by the authors. This information may contribute, directly or ...

New experimental techniques based on non-linear ultrafast spectroscopies have been developed over the last few years, and have been demonstrated to provide powerful probes of quantum dynamics in different types of molecular aggregates, including both natural and artificial light harvesting complexes. Fourier transform-based spectroscopies have been particularly successful, yet 'complete' spectral information normally necessitates the loss of all information on the temporal sequence of events in a ...

Abstract: We investigated the effect of the adenosine receptor agonist 5′‐( N ‐ethylcarboxamido)adenosine (NECA) in catecholamine secretion from adrenal chromaffin cells that exhibit only the A 2b subtype adenosine receptor. NECA reduced catecholamine release evoked by the nicotinic agonist 1,1‐dimethyl‐4‐phenylpiperazinium (DMPP) in a time‐dependent manner. Inhibition reached 25% after 30–40‐min exposure to NECA. This effect on DMPP‐evoked catecholamine secretion was mirrored by a similar (27.7 ± 3.3%), ...

We have assessed the relative contribution of Ca2+ entry and Ca2+ release from internal stores to the [Ca2+]i transients evoked by purinergic receptor activation in bovine adrenal chromaffin cells. The [Ca2+]i was recorded from single cells using ratiometric fura-2 microfluorometry. Two discrete groups of ATP-sensitive cells could be distinguished on the basis of their relative capacity to respond to ATP in the virtual absence of extracellular Ca2+. One group of cells (group I) failed to respond to ...

Abstract Synaptosomal preparations from rat midbrain exhibit specific responses to both ATP and Ap 5 A, which stimulate a [Ca 2+ ] i increase in the presynaptic terminals via specific ionotropic receptors, termed P2X , and diadenosine polyphosphate receptors. Aminergic terminals from rat brain basal ganglia were characterized by immunocolocalization of synaptophysin and the vesicular monoamine transporter VMAT2 and represent 29% of the total. These aminergic terminals respond to ATP and/or Ap 5 A with ...

Public involvement in efforts to control the current Ebola virus disease epidemic requires understandable information. We reviewed the readability of Ebola information from public health agencies in non-Ebola-affected areas. A substantial proportion of citizens would have difficulty understanding existing information, which would potentially hinder effective health-seeking behaviors.

This paper ascertains that Acoustic Emission (AE) monitoring is very effective for assessing the damage of reinforced concrete wide beam-column connections subjected to earthquake-type loadings. A cyclic test is conducted on an exterior connection until its failure. The experimental results show a strong correlation between the hysteretic strain energy and the AE energy histories. For this reason, a tentative formula is proposed, to predict the level of damage and the closeness to failure of the ...

Power efficiency is a major concern in operating cloud data centers. It affects operational costs and return on investment, with a profound impact on the environment. Current data center operating environments, such as management consoles and cloud control software, tend to optimize for performance and service level agreements and ignore power implications when evaluating workload scheduling choices. We believe that power should be elevated to the first-order consideration in data-center management ...

The Ca2+-dependent release of glutamate induced by 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) in rat cerebral cortical synaptosomes was reduced by removal of bovine serum albumin (BSA) from the incubation medium. The decrease in the glutamate release in the absence of BSA was consistent with a reduction in the rise in cytosolic free [Ca2+] after depolarization with 4-AP. Contrarily, neither the glutamate release nor the elevation in cytosolic free [Ca2+] after depolarization with 30 mM KCl was altered by the removal of ...

Abstract In this study, we show specific intracellular responses evoked by the stimulation of astrocytes with the P 1 , P 5 ‐di(adenosine‐5′)pentaphosphate, Ap 5 A. The stimulation of astrocytes with micromolar concentrations of the dinucleotide elicited rapid increases in intracellular calcium concentration ([Ca 2+ ] i ), showing an EC 50 value of 15.27 ± 0.61 µ m . Moreover, the stimulation of cells with nanomolar concentrations of Ap 5 A, unable to induce calcium responses, increased the phosphorylated forms ...

The nucleotide response distribution in cholinergic synaptic terminals is as follows; 22.4% to diadenosine pentaphosphate (Ap5A), 24.7% to adenosine 5′-triphosphate (ATP) and 16.3% to ...

The modulation of calcium channels by metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs) is a key event in the fine-tuning of neurotransmitter release. Here we report that, in cerebrocortical nerve terminals of adult rats, the inhibition of glutamate release is mediated by mGluR7. In this preparation, the major component of glutamate release is supported by P/Q-type Ca2+ channels (72.7%). However, mGluR7 selectively reduced the release component that is associated with N-type Ca2+ channels (29.9%). Inhibition ...

This paper deals with power-quality (PQ) event detection, classification and characterization using higher-order sliding cumulants (which are calculated over high-pass filtered signals to avoid the low-frequency 50-Hz sinusoid), whose maxima and minima are the coordinates of two-dimensional feature vectors. The classification strategy is based in competitive layers.
