Five specimens of Epigonus constanciae (Giglioli, 1880) (deepwater cardinalfish) were captured first time during a bottom trawl survey in Sigacik Bay and off Karaburun, Aegean Sea.This is the first record of the species from the Aegean Sea.A short description certain of morphometric and meristic features of specimens are given.

Epigonus merleni McCosker and Long, 1997 was originally described on the basis of a single specimen collected from the Galapagos Islands. It was considered to be distinguished from E. macrops (Brauer, 1906) by having 11+14 vertebrae and 57 lateral-line scales, but our examination of the holotype of E. merleni revealed that it actually has 10+15 vertebrae and 48+5 lateral-line scales. The holotype also has a luminescent window near the pelvic-fin base that is otherwise unique to E. macrops in the ...

A new species of deepwater cardinalfish, Epigonus exodon, is described based on two specimens, 97.0–60.2 mm standardlength, from Réunion (depth 450–480 m), western Indian Ocean. Epigonus exodon belongs the Epigonus oligolepis group, defined as having seven spines on the first dorsal fin, one spine and 10 soft rays on the second dorsal fin, 35–37 poredlateral-line scales to the end of the hypural and lacking an opercular spine and ribs on the last abdominal vertebra. It differsfrom other members of ...

A new epigonid fish, Epigonus draco n. sp., is described on the basis of six specimens (88.8-160.1 mm in standard length: SL) collected from the Philippines, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu in the Western Pacific. This species belongs to a subgroup of Epigonus, known as the "Epigonus constanciae group," whose members have a pungent opercular spine, more than 40 pored lateral-line scales (47-49 to the end of the hypural+3-4 on the caudal fin), and VII-I, 10 dorsal-fin rays. The new species is distinguished ...

Epigonus okamotoi Fricke, 2017 was originally described on the basis of a single specimen collected from New Britain, Papua New Guinea during one of the exploratory cruises (campaign: MADEEP) in 2014 organized under the Tropical Deep-Sea Benthos program. However, there are no clear differences in the meristic and morphometric characters between the holotype of the new species and specimens of E. draco Okamoto, 2015, including two additional specimens of the species found in the ichthyological collections ...

Background. Microichthys coccoi Rüppell, 1852 was originally described based on a stranded individual collected in the Strait of Messina, Sicily, central Mediterranean. The distribution range of the species is poorly known, as very few individuals have been recorded from Italy, Greece, and Turkey in the Mediterranean, and from the Azores in the north eastern Atlantic. The aim of this study was to report the presence of M. coccoi from the Balearic Islands (western Mediterranean). The history of species’ ...

The luminous deepwater cardinalfish, Epigonus macrops (Brauer, 1906), is recorded for the first time from the southeastern Atlantic (a single specimen, 121.0 mm SL) and the Timor Sea (two specimens, 128.6 and 150.8 mm SL). These specimens are described and compared with other specimens of the species from Western Australia, Indonesia, the western North Atlantic, and the Galápagos Islands. The present study reviews previous reports on the distribution of E. macrops in the world.
