In light of the recent discovery of an unrecognized species within nominal Zale lunifera (Hubner), the taxonomy of Z. lunifera is reassessed. Zale intenta (Walker), stat. rev. is the name that applies to the widespread species previously called Z. lunifera. Zale lunifera sensu stricto is the species previously thought to be undescribed; it occurs from the southern Atlantic coastal plain northward to the pine barrens of north-eastern United States. The recently proposed genus Neadysgonia Sullivan, 2010, was preceded in the literature by Gondysia Berio, 1955, a monotypic genus based on specimens without locality labels but presumed to be from Madagascar. The genus Gondysia replaces Neadysgonia and the species Gondysia pertorrida Berio, 1955, becomes a junior synonym of Gondysia consobrina (Guenée, 1852).

Here we describe a new Palearctic species in the noctuid genus Catocala. The new species, C. toropovi sp. n., differs from sympatric and morphologically similar C. repudiata Staudinger, 1888 and C. optima Staudinger, 1888, by wing pattern, male genitalia, and COI 5’ mitochondrial DNA. It is recorded from Kazakhstan, with adults having been collected at ultraviolet lights and baited sugar ropes.
