We present the results of H I 21 cm observations of 139 actively star-forming dwarf galaxies obtained with the 305 m radio telescope at Arecibo Observatory. Our sample consists of all objects cataloged in objective-prism surveys for UV-excess or emission-line galaxies published prior to the start of the survey that have luminosities below MB = -17.0 and that are located within the declination limits of the Arecibo telescope. Galaxies from the Markarian, Michigan, Case, Wasilewski, Haro, and Zwicky ...

In recent observations with a Fourier transform spectrometer at the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory, we have detected the highly pressure-broadened (FWHM = 11.2 GHz) J = 1-0 rotational transition of PH3 (phosphine) on Saturn. By modeling the saturnian atmosphere with a radiative transfer code, we find that the observed line profile is consistent with a constant PH3 mole fraction of 3.0 ± 1.0 ppm in the upper troposphere. A best fit to the depth of the line implies a cutoff at high altitudes, with no PH3 ...

Spectra of Uranus and Neptune have been obtained in the 190–310 GHz frequency range (i.e., 6.3–10.3 cm−1, wavelength range 1.0–1.5 mm), with a Fourier transform spectrometer at the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory. The data, with a spectral resolution of 7.2 GHz, were analyzed in a search for CO and PH3. Neither the CO (2–1) transition at 230 GHz nor the PH3(1–0) transition at 267 GHz were detected. The absence of a detectable absorption feature at the position of the CO (2–1) line favors a CO tropospheric ...

A medium-resolution Fourier-transform spectrometer for ground-based observation of astronomical sources at near-millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths is described. The steps involved in measuring and calibrating astronomical spectra are elaborated. The spectrometer is well suited to planetary spectroscopy, and initial measurements of the intrinsic brightness temperature spectra of Uranus and Neptune at wavelengths of 1.0 to 1.5 mm are presented.

A Fourier transform spectrometer was used to search for the rotational transitions of a number of molecular species in the atmospheres of Jupiter and Saturn in all available submillimeter atmospheric windows between 300 and 1000 GHz (1000 and 300 μm). The molecules which were searched for include the saturated molecules PH3and H2S, the hydrogen halides HCl and HBr, and the alkali hydrides LiH and NaH, as well as HCN and HCP. A strong absorption feature at 800.5 GHz corresponding to theJ= 3–2 transition ...

We present accurately calibrated submillimeter atmospheric transmission spectra obtained with a Fourier-transform spectrometer at the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory on Mauna Kea, Hawaii. These measurements cover the 0.9-0.3-mm wavelength range and are the first in a series aimed at defining the terrestrial long-wave atmospheric transmission curve. The 4.1-km altitude of the Mauna Kea site provides access to extremely low zenith water-vapor columns, permitting atmospheric observations at frequencies ...

This article was stimulated by the recent SIAM ''100 DigitChallenge'' of Nick Trefethen, beautifully described in a recent book. Indeed, these ten numeric challenge problems are also listed in a recent book by two of present authors, where they are followed by the ten symbolic/numeric challenge problems that are discussed in this article. Our intent was to present ten problems that are characteristic of the sorts of problems that commonly arise in ''experimental mathematics''. The challenge in each ...

This talk will focus on the infrastructure developed for representing and accessing data (especially mathematical data) in Wolfram|Alpha, as well as on the technologies and language extensions developed in the most recent version of Mathematica for making this data even more computationally accessible. Based on experiences using these technologies to create a prototype semantic digital library for a subset of mathematics, we believe the ambitious dream of creating of a semantic digital library for ...
