The frequent environment-unfriendly treatments of agro-industrial bio-wastes cause severe pollution through air pollution and through residual effluents and hazardous solid waste. These bio-wastes can contain phenolic compounds, forms of phenolic acids and flavonoids in plants. They are however the most abundant class of many phytochemicals and have been given great interest due to their health advantage and high economic value. An interesting upgrading of these bio-wastes may consist in obtaining ...

The aim of this work was to analyse the influence of the pyrolysis temperature and feedstock composition on biochar yield and physicochemical properties. The raw materials to be pyrolyzed were characterized, and an experimental design was applied to carry out a statistical study. Three operating temperatures (673, 773 and 873 K) and two bio-wastes (nut and almond shells) were used. Several correlations linking the values of different physicochemical properties of the biochar with the two variables ...

Due to the emergence of multidrug-resistant pathogens, it is necessary to develop options to fight infections caused by these agents. Lactoferrin (Lf) is a cationic nonheme multifunctional glycoprotein of the innate immune system of mammals that provides numerous benefits. Lf is bacteriostatic and/or bactericidal, can stimulate cell proliferation and differentiation, facilitate iron absorption, improve neural development and cognition, promote bone growth, prevent cancer and exert anti-inflammatory ...

The bio-waste slow pyrolysis process is assessed by four indicators to determine its energetic, exergetic, economic and environmental performance. The influence of the pyrolysis temperature (300–800 °C) on these parameters, but also on the biochar, bio-oil and gas production, is analysed. The biochar yield decreased 10.5% and the gas yield increased 17.2% between 300 and 800 °C. The bio-oil yield increased about 2.1% between 300 and 500 °C and decreased about 8% between 500 and 800 °C. Within the temperature ...

This work presents a H2S selective resistive gas sensor design based on a chemical field effect transistor (ChemFET) with open gate formed by hundreds of high temperature chemical vapour deposition (CVD) grown zinc oxide nanowires (ZnO NW). The sensing ability of pristine ZnO NWs and surface functionalized ZnO NWs for H2S is analysed systematically. ZnO NWs are functionalized by deposition of discontinuous gold (Au) nanoparticle films of different thicknesses of catalyst layer ranging from 1 to 10 nm ...

Thermochemical processes to convert bio-wastes into valuable products and bioenergy have been extensively studied in the literature. Experimental and, to a lesser extent, rigorous simulation papers concerning these processes have been widely considered and discussed in the literature. Nonetheless, there is still a gap to fill in providing a fast and reliable simulation scheme. In this paper, an efficient simulation strategy, combining the free-software COCO simulator for the bio-waste slow pyrolysis ...

Recently, electrospun polymeric nanofibers have proven to be an interesting strategy for drug delivery systems application. The high surface-to-volume ratio of the fibers can improve some processes, such as cell binding and proliferation, drug loading, and mass transfer processes. One of the most important and studied areas of electrospinning is in the drug delivery field, for the controlled release of active substances ranging from antibiotics and anticancer agents to macromolecules such as proteins ...

The self-powering, long-lasting, and functional features of embedded wireless microsensors appeal to an ever-expanding application space in monitoring, control, and diagnosis for military, commercial, industrial, space, and biomedical applications. Extended operational life, however, is difficult to achieve when power-intensive functions like telemetry draw whatever little energy is available from energy-storage microdevices like thin-film lithium-ion batteries and/or microscale fuel cells. Harvesting ...

As microscale devices, such as wireless microsensors and noninvasive biomedical implants, continue to shrink and incorporate more functions, energy becomes scarce, thereby shortening operation life. Furthermore, the limited volume space available constrains the stored energy available in state-of-the-art microbattery technologies, such as thin-film lithium ion (Li Ion). For long-lasting life, it is, therefore, necessary to replenish continuously the energy consumed by harnessing, storing, and delivering ...

Miniature self-powered systems like wireless microsensors that rely only on easily exhaustible tiny in-package batteries suffer from short lifetimes. Harvesters, however, extend life by replenishing consumed energy with energy from the environment. The problem is harvesters generate considerably low power so producing a net gain with which to recharge a battery requires ultra low-energy circuits. This brief presents a 1.5 x1.5 mm 2 0.7-μm BiCMOS self-tuning electrostatic energy-harvester integrated ...

Self-powered microsystems like wireless microsensors and biomedical implants derive power from in-package minibatteries that can only store sufficient energy to sustain the system for a short life. The environment, however, is a rich source of energy that, when harnessed, can replenish the otherwise exhausted battery. The problem is harvesters generate low power levels and the electronics required to transfer the energy to charge a battery can easily demand more than the power produced. This paper ...

Case series suggest that atlanto-occipital dissociation (AOD) is a potentially survivable injury. Intuitively, a significant neurologic injury, a high degree of initial distraction, and more severe associated injuries would decrease the likelihood of survival. However, this has never been demonstrated for this injury pattern in a statistically meaningful way. The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship of atlanto-occipital distraction, presence of a complete neurologic injury, and Injury ...

Abstract Conventional pharmaceuticals generally display the inability to transport active ingredients directly to specific regions of the body, amongst some of their main limitations. The distribution of the drugs in the circulatory system may lead to undesired toxicity, and therefore, adverse reactions. To address this situation, a selective transport of drugs is required, that is, releasing drugs specifically to the site of action in appropriate concentrations and in the right time. To achieve ...
