Abstract RNA-binding proteins (RPBs) are deeply involved in fundamental cellular processes in bacteria and are vital for their survival. Despite this, few studies have so far been dedicated to direct and global identification of bacterial RBPs. We have adapted the RNA interactome capture (RIC) technique, originally developed for eukaryotic systems, to globally identify RBPs in bacteria. RIC takes advantage of the base pairing potential of poly(A) tails to pull-down RNA–protein complexes. Overexpressing ...

The process of interception was studied in 25-year-old dense stands of Norway spruce in South Sweden. The throughfall was measured intensively during one month and extensively during four growing seasons using water captured by large roofs and with randomly distributed funnel gauges. It was found that about 45% of the precipitation was lost as interception loss from this dense forest canopy. However, many sources of potential error, particularly in measurement of precipitation and throughfall, may ...

Abstract A major effect of environment on crops is through crop phenology, and therefore, the capacity to predict phenology for new environments is important. Mechanistic crop models are a major tool for such predictions, but calibration of crop phenology models is difficult and there is no consensus on the best approach. We propose an original, detailed approach for calibration of such models, which we refer to as a calibration protocol. The protocol covers all the steps in the calibration workflow, ...

ABSTRACT Detailed eddy covariance measurements of radiation, energy and carbon dioxide fluxes over a residential neighbourhood of Singapore are presented. The measurements cover a period of ∼7 years and represent the longest set of flux data reported for a tropical city. Owing to its equatorial location, the observed radiation fluxes are uniformly high throughout the year. Annual changes in climate, energy fluxes and carbon dioxide exchange are therefore much less than observed in cities located ...

Abstract Native mouse type II collagen was used for immunization of DBA/1 mice. Arthritis developed exclusively in male animals and was characterized by a variable and delayed onset, a slow and progressive development, and frequent exacerbations of disease in several joints including those that were previously affected. Titers of anti‐type II collagen autoantibodies were found not to correlate well with arthritis development. It appears that experimental arthritis induced with homologous type II ...

High entropy alloys (HEAs) have been a hot research area for many years. They are solid solutions of at least five elements in approximately equimolar compositions. The HEAs are assumed to be stabilized by a high entropy of mixing favouring a solid solution phase instead of a mixture of intermetallic phases. The importance of entropy of mixing and the true nature of HEAs are debated but the concept has contributed to an interesting development of new alloys. They idea of stabilizing solid solutions ...

Direct drive bone conduction devices (BCDs) are used to rehabilitate patients with conductive or mixed hearing loss by stimulating the skull bone directly, either with an implanted transducer (active transcutaneous BCDs), or through a skin penetrating abutment rigidly coupled to an external vibrating transducer (percutaneous BCDs). Active transcutaneous BCDs have been under development to overcome limitations of the percutaneous bone anchored hearing aid (BAHA), mainly related to the skin penetration. ...

Thin films in the Mo-B-C system with varying carbon content (up to 37 at.%) were deposited using non-reactive DC magnetron sputtering. The phase composition and microstructure were determined and the potential use of the films in sliding electrical contact applications was evaluated. Films with lower than 23 at.% carbon content consisted of nanocrystalline MoB2 − x grains surrounded by an amorphous tissue phase (a-B for binary, and a-BCx for ternary films). With increasing carbon content grain sizes ...

Thin films based on transition-metal carbides exhibit many interesting physical and chemical properties making them attractive for a variety of applications. The most widely used method to produce metal carbide films with specific properties at reduced deposition temperatures is sputter deposition. A large number of papers in this field have been published during the last decades, showing that large variations in structure and properties can be obtained. This review will summarise the literature ...

This paper presents dc and RF characterization as well as modeling of vertical InAs nanowire (NW) MOSFETs with L G =200 nm and Al 2 O 3 /HfO 2 high-κ dielectric. Measurements at V DS =0.5 V show that high transconductance (g m =1.37 mS/μm), high drive current (I DS =1.34 mA/μm), and low ON-resistance (R ON =287 Ωμm) can be realized using vertical InAs NWs on Si substrates. By measuring the 1/f-noise, the gate area normalized gate voltage noise spectral density, S VG ·L G ·W G , is determined to be lowered by ...

III–V nanowire (NW) transistors are an emerging technology with the prospect of high performance and low power dissipation. Performance evaluations of these devices, however, have focused mostly on the intrinsic properties of the NW, excluding any parasitic elements. In this paper, a III–V NW transistor architecture is investigated, based on a NW array with a realistic footprint. Based on scaling rules for the structural parameters, 3-D representations of the transistor are generated, and the parasitic ...

This paper describes the third full release of the Rossby Centre Regional Climate model (RCA3), with an emphasis on changes compared to earlier versions, in particular the introduction of a new tiled land-surface scheme. The model performance over Europe when driven at the boundaries by ERA40 reanalysis is discussed and systematic biases identified. This discussion is performed for key near-surface variables, such as temperature, precipitation, wind speed and snow amounts at both seasonal and daily ...

This paper reviews a series of studies on alloying of sputtered TiC coatings with weak carbide-forming metals, Me, such as Al, Fe, Ni, Pt and Cu. Metastable solid solutions with Me on the Ti sites are easily obtained by magnetron sputtering at low temperatures (< 300 °C). First principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations of such carbides show that a driving force exists to remove carbon from the structure as an alternative and kinetically more favourable route compared to Me precipitation. ...

Increased levels of chemokines and prostaglandins have been reported in patients with inflammatory bowel disease, although their changes during disease development are less understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the local production of nine selected chemokines and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) to elucidate their role in colitis progression in BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice exposed to dextran sulphate sodium. The acute inflammation in both strains was accompanied by a significant up-regulation of ...

Nasal administration of a 3 kDa fluorescein dextran (FD3) solution to rats resulted in transcellular absorption across the olfactory epithelium and transfer to the olfactory bulb within 15 min. After entering the lamina propria, FD3 was transferred in the connective tissue surrounding the olfactory nerve bundles to the olfactory bulb of the brain. More FD3 was absorbed across the olfactory epithelium than across the respiratory epithelium and to the nasal associated lymphoid tissue. Further, the ...

The present experimental investigation, using recently assembled advanced electro-optical equipment for vibration analysis of three violins, was conducted to seek answers to three questions. A general or global question: Which parts of the violin body are vibrating the most? And two questions related to tonal quality: Are basic low-frequency vibration modes of a musically superior instrument different from those of an inferior violin? Can some special vibration properties be found to support the ‘‘ ...

Abstract The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II region is assumed to influence autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. In the mouse, the H ‐ 2 q haplotype is associated with susceptibility to collagen‐induced arthritis, while the H ‐ 2 p haplotype is not. The class II A molecules of these haplotypes differ by only four amino acids in the first domain of the β chain. To test if this difference accounts for the MHC influence on susceptibility to collagen‐induced arthritis, H ‐ 2 p ...
