c-di-GMP is considered to play an important role in regulating exopolysaccharide production, biofilm formation, and other phenotypes in bacteria. These attractive biological properties of c-di-GMP prompted us to carry out a systematic study of the bioactivity of c-di-GMP-related compounds, including derivatives with modified nucleoside bases, carbohydrates, or internucleotide bonds. Synthesis of c-dGpGp and its biological activities is reported.

Abstract Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a common cause of chronic non-viral liver disease. YKL-40, chitinase-like protein expressed in multiple tissues including liver, is involved in cell proliferation, inflammation and remodeling of the extracellular matrix. The aim of this study was to assess whether serum YKL-40 levels are associated with liver fibrosis in NAFLD patients. Serum YKL-40 levels were quantified in 111 NAFLD patients and 23 HCC patients with NAFLD. To identify the source ...

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a common cause of chronic non-viral liver disease. Activation of macrophages and hepatic stellate cells is a critical step that promotes liver fibrosis. We aimed to explore the feasibility of interleukin-34 (IL-34), a key regulator of macrophages, as a fibrosis marker in patients with NAFLD. We enrolled 197 liver biopsy-proven NAFLD patients. We evaluated the serum levels of IL-34, macrophage-colony stimulating factor (M-CSF), soluble CD163 (sCD163), 40 cytokines/ ...

To investigate the association between insulin resistance assessed by a homeostasis model and dietary habits.Cross-sectional analysis using a community-based cohort, the Nagahama Prospective Cohort for Comprehensive Human Bioscience. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed with log HOMA-IR or log HOMA-β as the dependent variable and 20 dietary habits, tobacco smoking, medical history, family medical history of diabetes, age and BMI as the simultaneous independent variables in each sex ...

Context: International interest in the Japanese diet has grown in recent years. Objective: The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate and organize the Japanese diet and dietary characteristics from an epidemiological perspective, mainly focusing on the nutritional and dietary elements. Data Sources: PubMed, Web of Science, Japan Medical Abstracts Society, JDream III, and CiNii databases were searched. Study Selection: The eligibility criteria included research with an epidemiological study ...

To our knowledge, the effect of the broth of dried kelp and dried bonito, dashi, on glucose metabolism and digestion has rarely been studied. Based on the component analysis of three actual broths served in traditional restaurants, a chemically synthesized broth with three free amino acids (histidine, glutamate, aspartate) and salt was prepared to investigate their effect on glucose metabolism, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP), and glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) secretion, and digestion. ...

The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of two kinds of major Japanese staple foods, white rice and white bread, on gut microbiota against the background in which participants eat common side dishes. Seven healthy subjects completed the dietary intervention with two 1-week test periods with a 1-week wash-out period in cross-over design (UMIN registration UMIN000023142). White bread or white rice and 21 frozen prepared side dishes were consumed during the test periods. At baseline and ...

Abstract Background Repaglinide is widely prescribed to reduce postprandial hyperglycemia and elevated glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels associated with type 2 diabetes, and clopidogrel is a thienopyridine antiplatelet agent and widely used in cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. It has been suggested that the concomitant use of repaglinide with clopidogrel may inhibit repaglinide metabolism, because repaglinide is a substrate of cytochrome P450 2C8 (CYP2C8) and the main metabolite of clopidogrel ...

Aim: A genetic polymorphism of inosine triphosphate pyrophosphatase (ITPA) has been associated with pegylated‐interferon/ribavirin (PEG‐IFN/RBV)‐induced anemia in chronic hepatitis C patients. However, correlation of the genetic variant with anemia following liver transplantation has not been determined. Methods: Sixty‐three hepatitis C virus (HCV)‐positive patients who underwent liver transplantation and PEG‐IFN/RBV therapy were enrolled. The rs1127354 was determined for each individual. Results: ...

Dietary habits and lifestyles are considered to affect the frequency of epigastric symptoms. In our previous study, we found that three amino acids in Japanese broth promoted gastric emptying. We hypothesized that a higher consumption of miso soup which was mainly composed of Japanese broth and miso paste would be associated with a lower frequency of epigastric symptoms. We conducted a cross-sectional study of the association between frequency of miso soup intake and reflux or dyspepsia symptoms ...

Abstract The purpose of this study is to investigate psychosocial factors (independent and interdependent self‐construal, emotional support) that may influence the health and well‐being of people with diabetes in an interdependent culture. We conducted a cross‐sectional survey on outpatients of type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus in Japan ( N = 180, age 22–88 years, M = 62.48 years), to examine their independent and interdependent self‐construal, perceived emotional support, and well‐being (interdependent ...

Recent evidence shows that cultural context can influence the management of diabetes mellitus. The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between interdependence, which is valued in the Eastern cultural context, and diabetes self-care behavior in Japanese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. We carried out a cross-sectional survey of 161 Japanese adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus using well-established questionnaires. The association of an interdependent tendency with diabetes ...

The anticancer drug, Lenvima (lenvatinib), has severe side effects. Therapeutic drug monitoring helps ensure its efficacy and safety. Regular and optimally timed blood sampling is tough, especially when lenvatinib is self-medicated. Microsampling using the easy to handle Microsampling Wing (MSW) may help circumvent this problem. However, current lenvatinib detection methods are not sensitive enough to detect its concentrations in microsamples (<50-250 μL). Thus, the aim of this study was 2-fold (1) develop ...
