This study analyzed the pledges received from all U.S. medical schools accredited in 1989 by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education of both the Association of American Medical Colleges and the American Medical Association to determine what pledges were affirmed and what ethical principles they contained. The Oath of Hippocrates was the most frequently affirmed pledge (the wording of which was used by 60 schools). Few oaths clearly demonstrated respect for patients' autonomy. The principle of ...

Asking children for their opinions about and input into treatment decisions is an idea whose time has come. One way to implement this notion with school-aged children and adolescents is through the Participation in Treatment Decisions Model. This model is based on a child's rights and recognizes the varying levels of cognitive development and competency in children. Health professionals have a responsibility to be advocates for child patients, to protect their interests, values, and rights, and ...

When "pyromania" from 1840-1890 is reviewed, it stands out as a concept that at first found favor in an era of moral insanity and moral treatment. During this period pyromania was variously labeled as a form of monomania, moral insanity, impulsive mania, or instinctive mania. As early as 1850, and clearly after the Civil War, however, controversial arguments regarding the locus of personal responsibilty emerged. Arguments were put forward that there could be diseased brains but not diseased minds. ...

This secondary analysis used the five-factor model of personality to examine personality traits in four samples of patients with chronic disorders. Profiles of personality traits differed across disorders. Although participants with psychiatric disorders and participants with HIV/AIDS had similar patterns of personality traits, patients with psychiatric disorders were more extreme on all traits except agreeableness. Patients with hyperlipidemia and those who had cardiothoracic transplants had similar ...

Organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) with regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) have been designed and fabricated aiming at the lowest possible working point (i.e. the adjusted values of gate voltage and drain–source voltage) for the use as sensor in electrolytes. Using thermally grown silicondioxide with a thickness of 45 nm it has been possible to dramatically lower the gate potential. Even around one volt the channel current and its modulation are still large enough for detection with simple ...

Adherence to treatment for chronic illnesses, including HIV disease, is a complex process, and needs practical interventions in poorly resourced clinic settings. This study tested the feasibility of an adherence intervention in 73 HIV-infected individuals in a Deep South public clinic based on Fisher & Fisher's Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills Model. There was high baseline adherence and unexpectedly high clinic attrition, and 27% of the intervention group received less than one-quarter of ...

We report an analytical model for organic thin-film transistors that accounts for the influence of trap states on the current voltage characteristics. As the subthreshold regime sensitively reacts to the presence of traps, it is used to extract approximate trap parameters from experimental transistor data. To demonstrate the capability of our method, a comparison with the results of 2-D drift-diffusion simulations is provided.

Reports of fear and psychological distress on the part of nurses when caring for AIDS patients have drawn attention to the real possibility that care for this very sick group of patients may be less than adequate. This paper reviews what is currently known about the attitudes of nurses and the care provided to HIV-infected individuals. The authors reveal the paucity of empirical data concerning quality of care and how the concept of stigma might serve to aid our understanding. The need for more ...

Objective The overall objective of this secondary analysis was to examine self-reported adherence to antiretroviral therapy in a sample of women with HIV. Design The primary study used survey methodology. Setting The setting included a university-based HIV/AIDS clinic in southwestern Pennsylvania and a community-based HIV/AIDS clinic in eastern Pennsylvania. Participants Sixty-one women infected with HIV who were taking protease inhibitors. Main Outcome Measure Self-reported adherence was based ...

The successful recruitment of participants is essential to the research process. To increase the rate of subject participation, investigators have to rely on help from health care providers who often serve as gatekeepers to potential research study subjects. These well-meaning professionals may limit subject participation in a study involving vulnerable populations under the guise of protecting these individuals from harm. We describe some of the characteristics of vulnerable populations affecting ...
