We evaluate single-capture cross sections in collisions of H+ or Li+ ions with H2 (D2, DT, T2) molecules in a range of impact energies of 50 eV amu-1-6.25 keV amu-1. We present the first theoretical treatment for Li+ projectiles, we extend the energy range of previous treatments for H+ and we test the accuracy of simplified approaches, such as the Franck-Condon approximation and a new angle-averaging procedure. For H+ + H2, a significant enhancement of the capture cross section is predicted when the ...

All integrals which arise when momentum-transfer phase factors are introduced in the molecular approach to atomic collisions can be evaluated analytically, provided that an atomic basis set of GTOs is used for the energy calculations. The authors present general closed-form formulae which are numerically stable, and can be coded directly for the automatic computation of the integrals. They expect their analysis to encourage workers to study explicitly the effect of momentum transfer in cross section ...

A critical analysis is presented for three different methods which introduce translation factors in the molecular approach to atomic collisions. Unlike other contributions in this field, approximate one- and many-electron wavefunctions are explicitly considered from the start. The authors' conclusions are illustrated with the calculation of the charge exchange cross section for He2++H(1s) to He+(2s,2p)+H+, which exhibits a strong origin dependence in the standard perturbed stationary states (PSS) ...

In a previous paper we have pointed out that the common-translation-factor (CTF) method is the only one which, at present, and within the framework of the molecular model of atomic collisions, can be shown to be both convergent and computationally fast, even for many-electron systems. In this Communication we check that this second statement is correct, presenting, for the first time, a molecular calculation involving two-electron translation factors, for ${\mathrm{He}}^{+}$ + H collisions. A careful ...

In a recent publication, the charge transfer cross section for He2++H(ls) collisions through photon-assisted 2pσ–3dσ transitions was calculated; this calculation, however, contained several errors whose quantitative–even qualitative effect on the results is not obvious. We present a correct evaluation of this laser-induced cross section, which turns out to be larger, and present a maximum for longer wavelengths, than the values previously reported. In addition, we have checked the applicability ...

An illustration is reported on the use of the Euclidean norm as a criterion of the quality of translation factors in the molecular model of atomic collisions. The relation between our norm and the deviation vector of Chang and Rapp [J. Chem. Phys. 59, 572 (1973)], and the computational simplicity of the calculation and minimization of the former quantity, are very appealing features of our approach. To show how the norm method can be applied, the ${\mathrm{He}}^{2+}$+H(1s)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathrm{ ...

A convergence study of cross sections is reported for electron transfer in He2++H and He++H+ collisions, using a molecular approach with up to ten (1 s sigma , 2 p sigma , 2 s sigma , 2 p pi ; 3 d sigma , 3 d pi , 3 p sigma , 4 f sigma , 4 f pi , 5 g sigma ) basis functions and a common translation factor (CTF) which was optimised according to the norm criterion. The energy ranges investigated are 0.75-16 keV amu-1 (He2++H) and 5-80 keV amu-1 (He++H+). Conclusions are drawn from the excellent agreement between these results ...

A previous study of charge exchange processes taking place through ionic–covalent transitions is extended to the case of Na+H and Na++H− collisions. A five-state molecular expansion, with the inclusion of two-electron translation factors, is employed to calculate the charge exchange and neutralization cross sections. Transitions at the first two pseudocrossings between the energy curves, practically determine the cross sections in the energy range 0.16–5 keV amu−1. We also show that the widely used ...

One factor that contributes to a successful fruit tree grafting is the establishment of symplasmic contacts in the graft interface to facilitate the transfer of compounds between scion and stock. Using novel experimental and theoretical approaches we investigated whether the localized incompatibility, experienced in some Prunus grafts, could be related to insufficient plasmodesmal coupling at an early stage of development within one of the partners. Dye-coupling analysis using fluorescent tracers ...

Isospora belli is a protozoan that only affects humans, after ingestion of Isospora's oocysts. Immunocompetent patients usually do not develop the infection. Immunocompromised hosts may have profuse diarrhea with other gastrointestinal symptoms. Treatment is based on trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. In 2006 we performed an isolated intestinal transplantation in a patient with ultra-short bowel syndrome. Neither rejection nor clinical problems occurred after transplant, but signs of intestinal inflammation ...

The particle number projected BCS (PBCS) approximation is tested against the exact solution of the SO(5) Richardson-Gaudin model for isovector pairing in a system of nondegenerate single-particle orbits. Two isovector PBCS wave functions are considered. One is constructed as a single proton-neutron pair condensate; the other corresponds to a product of a neutron pair condensate and a proton pair condensate. The PBCS equations are solved using a recurrence method and the analysis is performed for ...

We introduce an exactly solvable model for trapped three-color atom gases. Applications to a cigar-shaped trapped cold fermions reveal a complex structure of breached pairing phases. We find two competing superfluid phases at weak and intermediate couplings, each one with two color pair condensates, that can be distinguished from density profile measurements.
