Seed germination of Begonia Evansiana ANDR. was investigated at 29°C. The germination was induced under long-day conditions, the critical daylength being about 8 hours. Exposure to at least 2 or 3 cycles of long days was necessary for germination. The seeds could germinate under otherwise non-inductive photoperiods, when the dark period was interrupted with a short period of illumination. Thus the photoperiodic behaviour of Begonia seeds in germination is similar to that of typical long-day plants ...

The effects of light quality on the photoperiodic control in the flowering of a SD duckweed, Lemna perpusilla strain 6746, and a LD duckweed, L. gibba strain G3, were investigated with special reference to the interaction between R and B or FR lights. In the diurnal alternation of R or G light and dark periods, L. perpusilla responded as a SDP, but in that of B or FR light it was almost daylength-indifferent. On the other hand, L. gibba responded as a LDP under B, R or FR light, although the critical ...

Abstract In order to obtain evidence for the mechanism we proposed of the catalytic hydrogenolysis of benzyl-type alcohols and their methyl ethers, optically active 2-phenyl-2-butanol (Ia), 2-phenyl-2-methoxybutane (IIa), ethyl atrolactate (Ib), and ethyl 2-phenyl-2-methoxypropionate (IIb) were hydrogenolyzed over Raney nickel and Pd(H) catalysts under hydrogen or helium atmosphere in an ethanol solution. In all cases, the hydrogenolysis proceeded stereoselectively with retention of configuration over ...

The germination of seeds of Xanthium pensylvanicum Wallr. occurs in 2 phases, an initial passive phase of water uptake followed by an active phase of growth. These 2 phases have been separated experimentally, and shown to occur similarly in isolated cotyledons and embryonic axes. Measurements of the physical thrust generated by the entire seed and its separate components of cotyledon and axis reveal that non-dormant Xanthium seeds develop more than twice the thrust of dormant seeds, and that this ...

Pollen tubes penetrated stigma papilla cells in flowers that were illegitimately (self) pollinated, after CO2 treatment of these flowers. This shows that the self-incompatible reaction in Brassica can be removed by CO2 gas. Ethylene gas was not effective.

The activity of cytokinins in stimulating cell division formed the basis for the original techniques for their bioassay (12, 13) and for later modifications (6,7,8). In the subsequent decade, as various other activities of cytokinins blecame evident, numerous other types of stimulations have been employed in bioassays. These include cytokinin stimulations of Lemna frond growth (2), of seed germination (11), of leaf enlargement (4), or the cytokinin deferral of leaf senescence (9). Each of .these assay ...
