The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all sectors and human activities around the World. In this article we present a first attempt to understand the immediate impact of COVID-19 and the sanitary measures taken by governments on farming systems in Central America and Mexico (CAM). Through a review of information generated in these initial months of the COVID-19 pandemic (webinars, blogs, electronic publications, media) and 44 interviews with key informants across the region, we have identified the main ...

The lactating albino rat, at about 14 days postpartum, begins to emit a pheromone that serves as a powerful attractant to young. It was shown that the induction of this pheromone can be prevented if the female is made to experience only neonatal pups for a period of some two weeks. The time of emission of the pheromone could not, however, be hastened by substituting for the mother's own litter pups of an advanced age. The role of prolactin in mediating these results was discussed.

A gold nanoparticle (AuNP)-capped mesoporous silica nanosphere (MSN)-based intracellular drug delivery system (PR-AuNPs-MSN) for the photoinduced controlled release of an anticancer drug, paclitaxel, inside of human fibroblast and liver cells was synthesized and characterized. We found that the mesopores of MSN could be efficiently capped by the photoresponsive AuNPs without leaking the toxic drug, paclitaxel, inside of live human cells. This "zero premature release" characteristic is of importance ...

The design and optimization of a coupled multicomponent distillation system is a non-linear and multivariable problem. The complexity of this kind of problem results in high solving difficulty. This paper addresses the application of genetic algorithms to the optimization of intensified distillation systems for quaternary distillations. We used a multiobjective genetic algorithm with restrictions coupled to the Aspen Plus™ process simulator for the evaluation of the objective function. Several mixtures ...

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that nurses' beliefs about the technology they use in practice would affect their perception of individual and unit quality of care. A survey was administered to 347 pediatric nurses (response rate = 57.3%) from two academic freestanding pediatric hospitals in the United States. Two separate equations were constructed; one tested whether technology beliefs affected perceived individual quality of care, and the other tested whether technology beliefs ...

A series of organically functionalized, MCM-41 type mesoporous silica nanoparticle materials (PAP-LP-MSN and AP-PAP-MSN) with different pore sizes (5.7 nm and 2.5 nm, respectively) were synthesized and characterized. We selectively decorated the exterior particle surface of PAP-LP-MSN and the interior pore surface of AP-PAP-MSN with an oligonucleotide intercalating phenanthridinium functionality. While phenanthridinium itself is a cell membrane impermeable molecule, we demonstrated that both phenanthridinium- ...

This study estimates the soil water balance at forest/chaparral, upper forest, and wet-meadow sites in the Sierra San Pedro Mártir (SSPM), Baja California, Mexico, and compares the results to previously published data for similar sites in neighboring California, USA. Changes in soil water storage (0-80cm) were determined by using a neutron probe, deep drainage (> 80cm) was measured in minilysimeters, and runoff was estimated in 1m2 plots. Average annual precipitation was 714 - 226, 674 - 137, and 551 - 112 ...

In this review, we highlight the recent research developments of a series of surface-functionalized mesoporous silica nanoparticle (MSN) materials as efficient drug delivery carriers. The synthesis of this type of MSN materials is described along with the current methods for controlling the structural properties and chemical functionalization for biotechnological and biomedical applications. We summarized the advantages of using MSN for several drug delivery applications. The recent investigations ...

The hemolytic properties of amorphous silica and MCM-41-type mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) with rabbit red blood cells (RBCs) are compared. The amorphous silica exhibits a high hemolytic activity toward the RBCs. In contrast, a high biocompatibility between the MSNs and the RBCs is observed. The low hemolytic activity of the MSNs offers promising potential for various in vivo biotechnological applications. Detailed facts of importance to specialist readers are published as "Supporting Information". ...

Treatment of TRAIL-resistant tumor cells with the nitric oxide donor DETANONOate sensitizes the tumor cells to TRAIL-induced apoptosis concomitantly with DR5 upregulation. The mechanism of sensitization was examined based on the hypothesis that DETANONOate inhibits a transcription repressor Yin Yang 1 (YY1) that negatively regulates DR5 transcription. Treatment of the prostate carcinoma cell lines with DETANONOate inhibited both NF-κB and YY1 DNA-binding activities concomitantly with upregulation ...

The current study used clinical and statistical significance tests to investigate the effects of two forms (didactic or interactive) of a universal prevention program on attitudes about shape and weight, eating behaviors, the influence of body aesthetic models, and self-esteem. Three schools were randomly assigned to one, interactive, didactic, or a control condition. Children (61 girls and 59 boys, age 9-11 years) were evaluated at pre-intervention, post-intervention, and at 6-month follow-up. Programs ...

The fact that our global economy is broken may be widely accepted, but what precisely needs to be fixed has become the subject of enormous controversy. In 2008, the president of the United Nations General Assembly convened an international panel, chaired by Nobel Prize - winning economist Joseph Stiglitz and including twenty leading international experts on the international monetary system, to address this crucial issue. The Stiglitz Report, released by the committee in late 2009, sees the recent ...

Importance of the field: The incorporation of stimuli-responsive properties into nanostructured systems has recently attracted significant attention in the research of intracellular drug/gene delivery. In particular, numerous surface-functionalized, end-capped mesoporous silica nanoparticle (MSN) materials have been designed as efficient stimuli-responsive controlled release systems with the advantageous 'zero premature release' property.
